All of them provide wholesome social activities and opportunities for making friendships, Some of them make it possible for students to learn more about their subiects than limited class periods permit, others allow students to pursue a hobby, many of them are service clubs. Perhaps most important is that they serve as a training ground where students learn that co-operation pays and where they learn to develop qualities of leadership. Such opportunities have helped prepare citizens who, in turn, have mode Huntington an All-American City. ERTISERS AND PATRONS ...see page I4 A Basic Part of the community are the merchants who spend their lives serving the people of Huntington, furnishing them with the things which they need to live. These merchants have always been generous in their support of the school publications and without their support, the publications would not be possible. This year, in order to make their support even more pronounced, some are offering discounts and gifts to the students who visit them to get their yearbook ads autographed. In Visiting these merchants you will be telling them 'Thank You' for their support and showing them how much the students at H.H.S. appreciate the important phase of life in our All-American City that can be best identified as Community Commerce, SPORTS . . . pages I23-I-40 sv F its 2 5K????tlf1f5if5ll'I The sports program at Huntington High School is planned to serve every student Participation may begin with being an unknown member of any gym class and end with becoming the star player on a team Though the stars may get the most publicity every member of a team benehts from the experience Teams learn that winning comes through forgetting self and playing for the good of all We cannot always be winners so we must learn to be good losers as well A good sports program helps future citizens to be ome well rounded individuals for we must develop the physical side of life if the mental side is to remain in best condition Our All American rating is the result of having energetic citizens who are physically fit and mentally alert qualified for individual and team action 83 ACTIVITIES A D CALE DAR seepage I4I I 9 Activities at Huntington High School include a wide variety In addition to clubs and sports each student has an opportunity to participate in assemblies that vary from the pep assembly to the more specialized kind such as those at Thanksgiving Christmas and Easter and the Talent Assembly and the Senior Assembly In the spring the Hilarities are given This is a money raising protect in which the whole school takes part Each club has a booth students and teachers have fun putting on a talent show parents are everywhere working hard but having a wonderful time There are many dances through out the year from the very informal Student Mis to the formal Junior Senior Prom One of the highlights of each year is the election of a student body President and Vice President The procedure follows very closely that of our National Elections Political Parties are organized conventions are held Primary and General elections follow there is much enthusiasm and campaigning valuable lessons are learned for the future Students are very fortunate in having so many activities through which they may enrich their lives and through which they may develop into the type of citizen desired and required in this Community in order that our All American City Award will truly be Our Reward for past progress Tim fl 21 Our Challenge for future growth Wes as TP' ffm, Qtttse-its . , . i . . f 4 c . f H , . - Q O O , ' I I , . 2 1 I ' - 2 2 2 j . ,Q ' ' ' ' . ai rf ,g- .- , Q91 , . ssas qt V231 p,iqt,,zmn f zicqs , Q ' .zz ff? 2 Q Q9 . This bit of philosophy recalled from an old high school graduation gift card should sum up the reaction of all Huntingtonians, and especially the 1959 graduates at H.H,S., in planning ahead forthe growth and prosperity of this city. The atmosphere is right for a decade of progress ahead such as we have never had in the pastg there is no reason to believe we cannot move forward with conhdence. While we are exulting we should also resolve to carry through a large number of other improvements and to capture another award. We, at Huntington High, are proud of our City and equally proud that we and our graduates are considered a major factor in this Community's life. To you, Huntington, every good wish for your future!
