RAIDERS SAILED INTO MUSIC WITH CRUISIN' l950's MIGHTY H. H.S. RECREA TED THE 50's WITHA ROCKIN', ROLLIN', RAIDER DAX In the 1950's Jack Carney, a St. Louis Deejay, invented a radio character by the name of Pookie Snackenberg, who became a hero to the teens. Rock and Roll was on its way and Pookie helped get it there . The '50's were very eventful years. Dick C1ark's American Bandstand was pulling eight- million-plus viewers daily and Elvis Presley was drafted into the army. It was a period of settling in on the international scene as well, a period of shifts and stops. Nikita Khrushchev was named the new premier of the Soviet Union. John XXIII became the new Pope. The U.S. launched its first satellite, and nuclear test ban talks began. Besides humor, there was a compulsive faddish- X , ness about much of rock. For instance, Short S ik Shorts, by the Royal Teens, and Get a Job by XT wk' the Silhouettes.
