RECREA TED THE 50's WITHA ROCKIN', ROLLIN', RAIDER DAX In the 1950's Jack Carney, a St. Louis Deejay, invented a radio character by the name of Pookie Snackenberg, who became a hero to the teens. Rock and Roll was on its way and Pookie helped get it there . The '50's were very eventful years. Dick C1ark's American Bandstand was pulling eight- million-plus viewers daily and Elvis Presley was drafted into the army. It was a period of settling in on the international scene as well, a period of shifts and stops. Nikita Khrushchev was named the new premier of the Soviet Union. John XXIII became the new Pope. The U.S. launched its first satellite, and nuclear test ban talks began. Besides humor, there was a compulsive faddish- X , ness about much of rock. For instance, Short S ik Shorts, by the Royal Teens, and Get a Job by XT wk' the Silhouettes. Rock had a rollicking sense of comedy in the fifties and the Raiders recreated the scene with the Fonz, bobby socks, red lipst- ick, and juke box, and the usual greasers. ,J V , YA,,, f, QQ, gi Vlrp a,ff55,gf5fgzgg ,Wa DO IT TILL YOU 'RE SA TISFIED n w CELEBRA TE Ma. HUNTINGTGN TOPPED NOR TH CADDO, 9 7 The Raiders were fired up for their season opener against the North Caddo Rebels. Although neither team could gen- erate much offense, Huntington prevailed as the winner. Russ Hudson set up the first score when he recovered a fumble in Rebel territory and three plays later Wayne Methvien booted a 34 yard field goal to set a school record for that feat. The Rebels came back just before the half ended with a '7 yard run by Charles Abraham to put North Caddo in lead 7-3. On the next Raider possession, Newson fumbled again and six plays later David Causey booted a 32 yard field goal to give the Bucs a 10-O lead. Hunt- ington's next score came after the half. Tim Tipton engineered a 53 yard drive which ended when Newson recovered Don Mitchel1's fumble in the end zone. The extra point went wide. RAIDER BASKETBALL '76-'77 The Huntington Raider Basketball team had it together in the 76-77 season. Coach Larry Shoemaker had the team in tip-top shape before every game. With starters, George Bryant, Andre Dixon, Andre Lewis, Richard Davis, and Gary Graham, a group of fine athletes waited their turn on the bench. With a record of 5 wins and 2 losses three-fourths of the way through district play, the LHSAA suspended Huntington from all sports thus ruining basketball playoff hopes. At the time of suspension, the Raiders' over- all record was 15 wins to 15 losses with 3 games remaining to play. The completed season would undoubtedly have been the best in I-Iuntington's history. With a record of two wins and eight losses, the Raiders were always in every game down to the wire. The two victories came when the Raiders defeated the Woodlawn Knights and the BTW Lions. Freshman, Ricky Hardaway, set a Huntington record by defeating Woodlawn with his pitching ability. With catcher David Baker backing up the plate and a group of fine pitchers, the opposing batters were often sent to the bench dejected . Two players represented Huntington in District 1- AAAA. It Works. When you stop and think about your day-to-day life, you probably spend more time com- municating - and being communicated with - than any other single activity. The textbooks you read, your teachers' classroom presentations and, for that matter, all of education is really just communications. Add to that, newspapers and magazines, radios, televisions, your conversations with friends and the letters you write and we think you'll agree that communications is a big part of your life. And . . . don't forget the telephone. lf you're at all like most students, you probably spend at least an hour each day communicating by telephone with your friends. Chances are, the telephones you use each day were made right here. The Shreveport Works makes over five million telephones a year for South Central Bell and the other Bell System telephone companies. Bell Laboratories designs them. We build them. The Bell telephone companies install and keep them working. We're all part of a team - the Bell System team - working together to bring you and your friends the best in telephones and telephone service . I've enjoyed working with both the old and new members alike. Many trying and rewarding experiences were received during the five months the staff needed to compile the GALLEON. The GALLEON Staff would like to gratefully acknowledge Mr. Joseph Odom, Mr. Robert Trudeau, Reece Cox, Herbert Kelly, and Clifton Odom for their help during the 76-'77 school year. A special thanks and note of appreciation go to Mrs. Eleanor Devers and Mrs. Mary Dickens, the backbone of the GALLEON Staff, for with- out their guidance and supervision there would be no yearbook. My experiences continued to grow as I served on the GALLEON Staff and I look forward to another successful year.
