George M. Lee The Junior ROTC program is one of the means of implementing our national military policy. The pur- pose of the program is to teach cadets to become better leaders, to assume responsibilities , and to respect con- stitutive authority , both in military and civilian life . Some of the services rendered by the organization include ushering at civic and religious activities and performing in parades. Cadets are active in extracurri- cular activities such as Rifle and Drill Team competi- tions. While in the ROTC, the cadet learns Military His- tory, Drill and Ceremonies, Psychology of Leadership and Land Navigation. 126 IUNIOR RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORP SFC . AND IF WE HAD THE CHANCE TO DO ITALL AGAIN, TELL ME WOULD WE, COULD WE? l 0 0 147 MEMORIES MAYBE BEAUTIFUL AND YET WHAT'S TOO PAINFUL TO REMEMBER, WE SIMPLY CHOOSE TO FORGET. . . Homecoming 1975 involved everything and every- one. From the beginning when we first elected the court, to the final seconds of the game, to the twi- light of the dance, all of Raiderland shined with the excitement of homecoming. The classes of '74 and '75 came back to a fantastic pep rally and witnessed an HHS football victory in their honor. Homecoming was not all fun. Every club made signs for the pep rally and gameg the cheerleaders sponsored and planned the week long activities: the coaches and team practiced longerg the teachers co- ordinated the halftime showy the band, pep squad, dance team, and court rehearsed every night, all in the hope that homecoming would be successful . A quiet sigh fell upon the occupants of 6801 Ras- berry Lane , as the dance ended and the band played the last song - It's All Over. One would think it was a close game , but mother nature and her rain proved that not to be so. The Raiders were the first to score when quarterback Charles Crane connected with receiver Gregg Bell early in the game , and Bel1's first touchdown of the season . The Lions bounced back in a hurry and made their two point conversion to lead the Raiders by one at the half. When the two teams returned to the field , the rain came down , making it totally impossible for the fans to view the game . 217 RAIDERS VS. GIANTS The Huntington Raiders defeated the Green Oaks Giants 7 -O , but at the same time lost one of its star running backs, Brett Guillory , who suf- fered a severe hip injury. Raider quarterback Charles Crane made the game's only score, with just 8:55 into the first quarter, with a 1 yard plunge. The Raider defense led by linesman Tony Smith, shutout the Giants for the second consecutive year, and only gave up a minus 28 yards rush- ing. The Raiders set two school recordsg first by shutting out the Giantsg and second, by its running backs, who all contributed for over 200 yards, a recap of the week before . Even though losing Guillory for the season slot back Carlos Baker, who gained 67 yards to chop down the Giants, will fill in his shoes. RA IDERS VS. PAN THERS The Raiders were defeated by the Panthers 22-8. The Raiders who had previously beaten the Panthers the last two years were held scoreless the entire second half. B UCCANEERS The Raiders stunned the Haughton Buccaneers, 19-14. The deadly trio, Taylor, Gatlin, and Baker all com- bined for over 300 yards. Taylor, the leading rusher, scored the first touchdown soon as the Raiders gained possession in the first quar ter. Gatlin had a big night with 91 yards rushing and two big touchdowns. E Senior Raiders stood as the Hunting ton Band played the National Anthem . U son. was amazed at the score. I can't believe I'd gotten stiff. 26 RA IDERS VS. FALCONS The Huntington Raiders celebrated their 2nd Homecoming by defeating the Northwood Falcons 27-7 . Frank Gatlin had a rushing total of 167 yards on 10 carries, but the main factor in the Raiders vic- tory was fullback Brett Guillory who ran for 90 yards and three big touchdowns. The Falcons were first to score early in the first quarter, but the Raiders bounced right back to take the lead by one . The game was exciting until the Raiders broke it wide open and everything went wild . Behind the running of Gatlin, Guillory, Taylor, and quarterback Charles Crane, the Huntington Raiders continued to break old school records. The team came out of this year's season with a 14-18 overall record and a 4-6 record in district play. Coaches Larry Shoemaker and Garfield Dooley guided the players to great victories and heart- breaking defeats. Like last year's team the Cagers brought home an athletic trophy after capturing second place in the Leesville Classic. Once again the Raiders were contenders for the 1-AAAA championship. Seniors Cleveland Bryant, Jeff Coleman, and Gary Calhoun led the team in scoring and were also high scorers in the district. Best senior defen- sive player was lessie Thompson. Most assists went to senior forward Edward Horton, while jun- ior starter Mickey Pinkney led in rebounds. Even though the Raider Cagers did not make the playoffs, they gained respect from everyone who watched them play. The story of the invention of the telephone begins officially on the night of March 10 , 1876: Mr. Watson, come hereg I want to see you! These historic words , the first sentence ever transmitted over an electric telephone , were uttered by Alexander Graham Bell when he accidentally spilled acid on his clothes. The acid was part of the transmission apparatus, called the Liquid Telephoneg the receiver was a tuned reed . From that beginning, the telephone has grown to become a necessary part of everyday life . In 1976 , the Bell system has nearly 120 million telephones in service . Worldwide , there are about 850 million telephones in service , 99 . 5 per cent of which can be easily reached by the Bell System . The Shreveport Works of Western Electric plays a significant role in the telephone story . Right here in Shreveport, we manufacture over half of all new telephone sets for the Bell System , giving our city the distinction of being the Telephone Capital of the World. Our 5 ,400 employees will continue to provide South Central Bell and the other Bell companies with quality telephones and related equipment. Western Electric's Shreveport Works: We're part of the Bell System . . . We make things that bring people closer. WILLIE KAHN J. Z. WILLIAMS Church Treasurer Chm. Deac. Board 1057 Texas Avenue L. L. Lawrence, assistant prin- cipal of Huntington High School from August, 1973, until his death, February 27, 1976. TOUCHING SHOULDERS There's a comforting thought at the close of the day , When I'm weary and lonely and sad, That sort of grips hold of my crusty old heart And bids it be merry and glad. It gets in my soul and it drives out the blues , And finally thrills through and through. It is just a sweet memory that chants the refrain: I'm glad I touch shoulders with you! Did you know you were brave, did you know you were strong? Did you know there was one leaning hard? Did you know that I waited and listened and prayed , And was cheered by your simplest word? Did you know that I longed for that smile on your face , For the sound of your voice ringing true? Did you know I grew stronger and better because I had merely touched shoulders with you? I am glad that I live, that I battle and strive For the place that I know I must fillg I am thankful for sorrows, I'll meet with a grin What fortune may send, good or ill. I may not have wealth, I may not be great, But I know I shall always be true, For I have in my life that courage you gave When once I rubbed shoulders with you. - Author Unknown - 287 IT NOW BELONGS TO YO Looking back on the compiling of the 1976 GALLEON, my thoughts race from schedules in September to layouts in November, to cropping in January, and to final deadlines in February. No yearbook is the labor of one individual, but is the result of many people's efforts. So, to the '76 GALLEON staff I say thanks. A special thanks goes to TRADE WINDS' photographer, Reece Cox, who supplied so many of the pictures within these covers. To the ladies without whom there would have been no yearbook - Mrs. Eleanor Devers and Mrs. Mary Dickens - we owe an extra debt of gratitude. And finally - it has been fun, it was a great experience, but it now belongs to you!
