If that thought goes through your mind constantly, then you have the wrong idea about education. When your years in Huntington East High School are completed, that diploma you receive is the key to the door of opportunity. As you step off the stage, you cross the threshold into that future for which you planned at East. Your iob will probably require a background of the subjects you took at East. This iob might arouse your interest in another field. If you really have the ambition to find out something about that new hobby, the Trade School would probably have a course of study about it. Perhaps you enioy tinkering with o motor to see what makes it tick. The Trades School offers Auto Mechanics and Aeronautics. Maybe you're best at repairing electrical appliances. lf this suits your fancy, then sign up for the Radio-TV Course or the Electricity Course. Possibly you enioy making things. then the wood working, sheetmetal, tailoring, handicrafts and flower-arrangement. So you'd like to take some academic courses, then the high school will help you there. Shorthand, typing. book- keeping, or English-those subjects would assist you in doing your present job better. Actually high school is iust the start on a trip through life. Simply because you graduated doesn't mean your education is complete, it is just the beginning of your future. . These and many other words were what the Highlander maiorettes heard during the month ot August and football season from their instructor, Miss Hazel Sumter. The Highlander Bonnie Lassies were honored by receiving autographed records ol My Bonnie Lassie from the Ames Brothers and were also thrilled when they met the Scots' Guards from Queen Elizabeth! Palace. The Maiorette Show was something new this year, The climax of being a Highlander maiorette was the band Festival. The maiorettes are chosen by a council of teachers which use the following characteristics in selecting them: scholarship, character, rhythmic movement, ani' mation, bodily contours, personal appearance, and ability to get along with the group. CHEERLEADERS I5 Rahs lor our team! These words are heard all through football and basketball season. The cheerleaders are always there leading the cheers and boosting the team onward. The Highlanders have six cheerleaders which help to promote goodwill between our school and other schools in and out ot the state. These girls are chosen by a secret ballot which is cast by the student body. They are picked on the following character- istics: coordination, character, personality, and scholarship. Miss Hazel Sumter is the instructor ol the cheerleaders as well as the maiorettes. She has graciously given her personal time and energy to the training ot these girls. and everyone should be proud ol each and everyone ot them for their splendid cooperation in all situations.
