This book aims to highlight these four areas of human growth, repre- senting each by a different ship with which every person should sail the sea of his or her life, making Christ the captain and pilot of each: Scholarship, Worship, Fellowship, and Sportsmanship. . With these aims in mind, we the 1954 staff, happily present you, the students, alumni, and friends of H.C., with the 1954 Mnemosyne. Pro Zurcher CEOICAUOD Q Probably no one connected with Huntington College better personifies the four-fold development serving as the theme for this book than the recipient of this year's dedication. Probably no one at H.C. better fits the description of Gentleman and a Scholar , supplemented by the all- important and equally appropriate adjective, Christian , For these reasons, and because of his loyal devotion and service to the college, We, the 1954 staff, dedicate this book to one Who, although one of the faculty's comparative youngsters , more than deserves it: our speech and dramatics professor, and the college registrar, I MR. The Choir, under the capable leadership of Prof. John A. Miller, was busy, as always, from the beginning of the year to the end. Early in the fall they began work on a task many would like to see repeated in the years to come, a performance of Handel's familiar and well-loved 'The Messiah , presented early in December, with the aid of enthusiastic and cooperative volunteer singers from the community and a small instrumental ensemble. It meant a lot of work, but they will never forget the thrilling experience. As soon as the choir finished that performance they again started to work, this time in preparation for the annual spring tour, April 8-18, taking in Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois. The choir sang at several local churches this year, including, of course, the annual concert at College Park Church the Sunday before the tour. A party was given for the choir after this concert at the home of President Becker in appreciation of their work. We need hardly say, however, that the fun of singing and the blessings received were in themselves a sufficient reward for all the work involved. lst Row-J. Buchholz, E. Plummer, M. Birdsull, A. Soon after school began, the members began to plan for last fall's play, The Peaceful Inn , a mystery-phantasy set in the barren moors of England. This, however, does not end the story of Campus Players. In addition they usually present two or three one-act plays during the school year to various local audiences, sometimes including Huntington area high school. This year H.C. students and other neighborhood audiences enjoyed The Roman Kid and Eternal Life . All of the profits from these plays are used to improve and increase the facilities of the college auditorium to make possible better plays in the future. This year's officers were Mildred Birdsall, President, Betty Thornton, Vice President, Roger Buzzard, Treasurer, and Ethel DeKraker, Secretary. Hammel Thrasher D. Hammel In his first year as coach at Huntington College, Richard Klopfenstein directed what may well be considered a very successful season. The Foresters finished the basketball season with their tenth victory and their fourth in a row, giving them a 10-11 record. High on the list of bright spots were the two one-point victories over highly touted Earlham College and the season finale which brought the win total into double figures. Mauri Reed and Gene Buzzard vied for scoring honors as Mauri, who scored most points 13511, and Gene, who scored 344 in one less game, took honors for average points per game. Mauri also won the free throw award with a fine average of .755. A veteran-studded squad will be on hand next year as only one senior, Mark Stoffel, will be lost Via graduation. The Foresters may look for an even better win-loss record next year, but we are sure that when it comes to Hesprit de corp , this year's team, coach, and fans top them all. BASGBAU Fair pitching, weak hitting, and lousy fielding combined to give the Huntington College Foresters a less than mediocre 1953 baseball record of two wins and seven losses. The pitching was fair in that Hal Platt C2-25 and Mauri Reed Q0-57 allowed the opposition 59 hits good for 42 runs in the nine gamesg the hitting was weak in that our 65 hits f .241 ave.D resulted in only 32 runsg and the fielding was lousy in that we committed 38 errors which allowed far too many unearned runs to score. The two wins were both over Indiana Tech. of Fort Wayneg the one a 14-3 hit spree, the other a 4-0 shutout. Pitcher Hal Platt led the hitting with a .379 batting averageg Dewey Ferris, catcher, batted .333 and hit one of the two home runs, the other being hit by Dal Hammel. Mark Hammel, who caught and played center field during his college career, is the only graduating senior. Dewey Ferris was elected honorary team captain for the year. 1953 SCHEDULE Huntington 0 Ind.
