Samtaru Enqlneer One of the most important and yet the least noticed persons around the college is the sanitary engineer Of course this term is hardly correct to use at Huntlngton College because the poor man has much to do that has no connection w1th the meaning of sanltary engineer He must shovel the coal and wheel the ashes work the tra is and drain the pipes When a pipe breaks he must be on hand to mal e repairs He sweeps the Hoors and dusts the furniture During thc vacatlons he washes the windows and makes general repairs Another duty that falls to his lot is the care of the Dorm He must keep the short girls the tall girls the old girls, and the young girls warm A dlfflcult tasl , even the furnace played out at this Then the wind blows at times, and a wmdow falls ln, another task Nlext a pole breal s letting the light wires fall to the ground Now he must turn electrician and find a new pole and attach the wires and light comes once more When the balmy breezes blow from the south he remembers that he IS also landscape gardener The dormitory lawn receives first attentlon I' his being finished we see him picking up around the college The fires no longer need tending, so the lawn mower 15 brought out and put to work It wouldnt do for the sanltary engineer to catch cold slttlng around It takes many things put together to make up a life, and a sanltary englneer gets them We are indeed fortunate to have so good a man as He is well liked by all We surt missed him when he found lt necessary to take off for an operation Huntley and Davls tried to fill his place Huntley using the shovel and Davls the broom Both are experts, but were glad to be relieved when Charlie returned He still needed an assistant, so Davis helped on Saturdays Here was an assistant that needed no keys He opened the lock by magic The task of the sanltary engineer IS a sc1ent1f1c one In the good old days when we had a Jamtor all that was necessary to know was the color of coal and the marks on a steam guage plus the ability to dlstmgulsh a broom from a mop Times change and now It is necessary to know how to get the most steam out of coal and to have understanding of all things connected wlth a steam boiler Also how to keep the floors and windows clean Charlle has the needed knowledge and even the philosophy of sam tary engineering He believes in the students helplng, so he writes poetry containing his ohllosophy How is thls? ttWalk on the sidewalk not in the street Clean the mud off outside not under your seat' If you want to meet a real man let me introduce you to Charles Lemar, sanltary engineer B R D PAGE TNVENTY TWO . 7 . . , ' s , A Q .
