Carol Rydberg, a Junior, spoke from 10 to 12 minutes on a phase of our Constitution, and won the school and local contest sponsored by the American Legion. She chose the topic Our Constitution, Worth Having, Worth Defend- ing. Carol participated in the District Contest at Tipton and there also delivered an extem- poraneous speech on Article 4 Section 4 of the Constitution. Other participants in the Con- test were Martha Settlemyre, Diana Ludwig, Sharon Shape, Patricia Petre, Stoltz. and Janet iii 4 H.C.H. students took an ac- tive interest in a great number of speech and essay contests during the course of the school year. Among the speech con- tests was the Voice of Democ- racy contest sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Janet Bowman brought honor to both her Sophomore class and Huntington Catholic by taking first place in both the school and the local contests. Other participants were: Carol Coughlin, Janet Andrews, Car- ol Seifert, Alyce Kastner, and Kathy Rauktis, Miss Bowman won for herself a portable clock radio and for her school a Traveling Trophyfl The K of C also sponsored an Essay Contest on Teen a eis . Vocations Terry Q Enright won lst prize which was a watch, and Paula Scher won a pen and pencil set as 2nd prize. In the Rotary sponsored con- Paula Scher, a test, Miss sophomore, moved on to cap- ture first place in the City Contest and a S5 prize. She and Carol Fink were the two en- trants from H.C.H. Their topic was What is the Individuals Responsibility for Creating Better Conditions in His Com- munity, State, Nation, or World?,' It had to be an 8 to 10 minute memorized speech. ,33-

Our Sunday Visitor spon- sored an Essay Contest, the topic being How the Catholic Press Helps Me In My Studies. The entrants were Ann Fink, Peggy Scheiber, Steve Frick, Dick Bickel, Tom PeGan, Carol Seifert, Theresa Nicholson, and Janet Andrews. ' 'J , 1, An Essay submitted by Susan PeGan on Muscular Dis- trophy, was sent to Indianapo- lis for judging. Susie's speech, which was 2,000 to 2,500 words, won for Susie a Certi- ficate of Award from the Mus- cular Distrophy Association. National Employment of Physically Handicapped' was the topic of the essay contest in which the manuscripts of Ann Fink and Peg Scheiber were sent in. Certificates of honor- able mention were received. Other entrants were Bonnie Beekman, Sharon Eckert, Carolyn Saluke, Mary Kind- ler, Dennis Holzinger, and Tom PeGan. fpicture belowj .-32..
