1958 etreat Do You Appreciate God's Gifts? What is the first thing you do when you awake in the morning? Do you look out the window and say, Why did I get out of bed today? Or do you start the day with a prayer on your lips, thanking God for your possessions? What Do We Have To Thank For? This is a silly question. It should be phrased, What haven't we to thank God for. Take a look around you. A good look. You never knew you had so much to be thankful for, did you? How would you like to wake up in the morning and find that you can't see? Well you say, This is a small chance of ever happening. Well there are a lot of things that seem un- probable, but they occur just the same. We Americans don't have any idea of how it feels to lose our freedom or go hungry for months at a time. Think about it for a while, and when you're through, get down on your knees and thank God Al- mighty for what you have. Do You Know What Pain Is? If your answer is yes, you're a liar. We think of pain as if we have suffered unbearable torture in our lifetime. If you want an example of pain, light a match and hold it to your hand for just a few seconds. Then compare it to the fires of hell,1- there is quite a dif- ference isn't there? Now take the word eternity, and ask yourself what it means. Ima- gine the number of drops of water in the oceans, or the grains of sand on the seashores and deserts, or the leaves of all the trees: that word eternity represents more than that. We talk about eternity as if it has limitations. The life we spend on this earth is infinites- imal compared to the life we spend for eternity. What Do You Consider A Good Time? If you were at a party, and Jesus and Mary were to stop in, would you be ashamed to introduce your friends to them. Do you run around with good Catholic companions? Remem- ber, people judge your charac- ter by your associates. Choose a date who would make a good mate. We lose God by sin. Sin is the only thing to keep us from being happy. Americans are the cleanest of all according to soap advertisements. But what about cleanliness of soul? Americans have been spared from being bombed because of H.C.H.S. Students held their annual retreat January 16-17. Fa- ther Raymond Ossdyke, retreat master, had for his theme You gotta' be happy. Silence, prayer, and conferences patterned the two days during which the students took inventory of their spirit- ual status. -27- Father Ossdyke their charity. But some day our turn for destruction will come. Our Lady of Fatima said, Stop sinning, stop breaking my Son's heartf' She stressed that we should begin to make reparation to pay our debt. Our confessions are too rou- tine. lf you love God, you won't commit a single venial sin. No one can live in mortal sin and not be bothered by it. They want to get rid of it - quick! You cannot say, I'm saved, you haven't died yet. The only way to be saved is living in God's grace and friendship. Earthly hell is nothing compared to the hell God has in store for grave sinners. Hell is a place of hatred and rebel- lion. How long will forever be for you? Choose right - earthly plea- sures vs. eternal happiness. God will forgive anything of anyone except if he doesn't love God. The greatest suffering in hell is the separation from God. LORD SAVE US!
