Boy ofthe Year f-New M . ,V Gary Hayward- 1970-71 Boy ofthe Year Chess was one of his many interests. Huntington Beach High School's Boy of the Year is Gary Hayward, son of Mr. and Mrs. David K. Hayward of Huntington Beach. Gary was extremely involved in academic work not only on the Huntington Beach campus but on others as well. He was a member of the California t Scholarship Federation every semester of his high school career. He repre- sented Huntington Beach in the Orange County Academic Decathlon. Gary was a member of CSF, Mathematics Club and Chess Club. Also, he was named A a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. He received the Tower Award for outstanding academic achievement in mathematics after previously be- 1 ing a certificate winner for this honor. This young man was also on the video- tape crew, working as an assistant to the audio-visual director. He was in- f volved in all school plays and musicals, and assisted with audio-visual aids for all school and community functions held in the high school. Gary also attended classes at Golden West College and Orange Coast College in the math department working on a textbook key for computors. Girl ofthe Year Huntington Beach High School's Girl of the Year is Gwynn Geiger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Geiger of Huntington Beach. During her four years at Huntington Beach Gwynn served her fellow students as a representative on class councils, as sophomore class secretary, as junior class president, as senior class treasurer, and as a member of the Oiler Executive Board for two years. She also served as a representative to Student Congress for four years and twice was a delegate to District 21 CA SC conferences. Among her many on campus activities were CSF, AFS, Pep Club, Drill Team, Tower Club, GAA, and the Cauldron staff. As members of these organizations, she showed her leadership by serving as Drill Team captain for two years, Tower Club president during her senior year, GAA Board member, Homecoming chairman, Pep Commissioner, Queen of Courts chairman, and as Americans Abroad final- ist in the AFS program. Gwynn was a member of the Orange County Academic Decathalon Team, serving on the Honors team which was made up of students with a 3.5-4.0 GPA. She was named one of the Top Ten Oilers, was selected a candidate for Outstand- ing Teenager of America, was honored with the Daughters of the American Revolution Award, and was selected Miss Junior Miss of Huntington Beach. Athlete ofthe Year The Athlete of the Year award was the highest ath- letic award given at Huntington Beach High School. Selected by the coaching staff, this young man showed the abilities which exemplified the outstanding ath- lete. Skills, techniques, leadership, dedication, and outstanding achievement were among the many qual- ities displayed by a top athlete. The honor was given to the athlete with the skill and character highly recog- nized in him by his teammates and coaches.
