Page ten Class Poem TO THE CLASS OF '15 Re.rpice et Proxpicen When first with hearts coura eous, we did pass Between the portals of our Aima Mater, Thrilled with the hope of future toil rewarded By mem'ry of work already nobly done, We brought awakened minds, and childish eyes, To look with wonder on the world around, And choose the life which lay before us then. And slowly did our minds partake the food Of wisdom's wealth, and comprehensive store Of Knowledge. Slowly did our eyes awaken To behold the vastness of the world, Steiped in ignorance, and dread disease, An superstitious fear, and racking pain Of mind and body. Now, about to leave The door, in strength of powers new, of wealth Of broad, and skillful vision, fit to take The burden from the present weary bearers- Shall we, despairing, shirk our heaven-sent task, Or, strong in soul, continue the crusade To rid this earth of Error's ruthless grasp And Sin's terrific blight P Alpheus, once, The river god, while drifting slowly on His mossy bed, espied the forest nymph Arethusa. She in sudden shyness turned To flee his rippling song of instant love. Faster, faster, fled the nymph, and close Behind the god did speed, until at last, Despairing of escape, Arethusa called U on her fav'ring goddess, who to save The lovely nymph, around her cast a cloud, And bore her to a neighb'ring isle, deemed safe From deity's pursuit, and changed her to A s arkling fountain pure. Alpheus, still Undnaunted, sank beneath the earth, to bore A toilsome way through Pluto's realm of gold And jewels, on beneath the sea to rise Beside the fount of Arethusa, there To mingle her sweet waters and his own- So let us wed ourselves to regal knowledge And seek the pure, the beautiful, the good: That at the close of our appointed day We may possess an understanding infinite To be a true companion to Eternal Life.
