W X975 Wwaneuam HUGHES HIGH SCHOOL IN 1977-78: Some parts have changed little. Take the main front building. Its tudor-gothic architecture has looked much the same since its construction in 1910. At that time, the place cost $1 million and housed 1,500 students. The addition of the annex fourteen years later almost dou- bled the school's capacity. The next era of expansion did not really arrive until 1970 with the completion of Krueck Center. Just five years later, the Vocational Building was ttbolted on in the rear. What next? North, South, East, and West left little space for further expansion. How about up, so Hughes students could sell tickets to the best view of Fairmount, or hitch rides with the local traffic cop- ters. Down would be another possibility, but what do you name a floor below the sub- basement? Through the years, those nosey Gargoyle have contin- ued to peer down on all who pass, taking in the fuss and flash, the status quo and strides below. By the way, how did the photographer get so high. . .er, so close? Of course, our students did have a rather different appearance'years ago - hair style, skin coior, dress. Imagine all young men wearing coats and ties to class. Why, few teachers are that formal today. In fact, some of the staff even ride long-eared critters. Although in this case it appears the poor beast may be more crushed than ridden. But in front of his players, Coach Kelly was not going to tumble that ball! Other staff members usually settle for riding tslip-sliding on icy dast up or down to the parking lots. While most of the day is stitl spent in cfasses, staffers do have their more private moments - especially for lunch. Somehow the Iensman missed Mr. Wetenkamp at the card game, but the other players are not missing his lat- est tale. e- eJ. A candid scene, around what used to be called the ttClifton Palace, reflects what has become a perennially tight school budget. HHaven't they fixed that mirror yet? was heard from an ancient alumnus. You bet the students get into the food scene too - behind the scenes, and all around the pop and chip machines. Well, after several laps of 'tsecurity pursuit, calories just have to be replaced. But our youth carry on with their original shirts, tall tasks, op-art, disc spinning, syncopated feet, office help, and some beautiful smiles. by their smiles, they're pretty youthful too. OTHER SCENES AND FACES Much Hughesian glory is symbolized in cabinets such as these. Check them out during lunch some day. Better yet, plan to add some of your own glory. What's coming may blow some minds. Under the new Urban Education Pilot Project, awards like this will be given for academic excellence 95 well as the athletic kindl Not many years ago, the parking lot was all on one level. 80 only staff members with years of seniority could get a slot. The new one has lost that gently curved wall, but it does accomodate almost every- body. That Tudor-Gothic exterior tshown a few pages earlieo has its interior counterpart as shown here. You can bet they don't make them that way anymore. Unfortunately, winged victory has taken wing, and only Mr. Merkle knows the whereabouts of that banner. Latin anyone? But what do they have in common with this grid of steel, lumber and concrete below? You guessed it. Both represent a foundation for what comes next. .-..: h'tg The understructure of Krueck Gymnasium, ...-...-,e.-N'va5'!rf: 7 wean: n 0m '3? -.-.-g- .,.....r.o,-..r9.- What was happening beyond our school domain for 1977-78? Well, that old Ohio River kept rolling - trying to live down getting frozen solid last year. Some cars took the t'ice bridge far below the Brent- Spence. The baseball Reds didn't even make the playoffs - for a change, while the Bengals came so close e again. With the failure of yet another tax levy, the Cincinnati schools ca me closer than ever to closing for lack of money. A couple of very young men a Springer and Blackwell a became Mayor and Vice Mayor of the city. The Sheraton-Gibson Hotel tsee the sigm no longer shared the downtown plaza. 17,9332 Mann 5 .Jc'n A bus strike left a lot of our students stuck in their own neighborhoods for weeks around Christmas time. The teacher-student ratio was more like tutor-tutee. Just twenty miles away, the Ford Motor Co. decided to build a $500 million transmission plant. With several thousand jobs expected, many Hughes grads tpast and futurel might find themselves Shifting in that direction. On the state level and beyond, government officials and private groups continued a struggle now almost a quarter- century old: Whether public schools will be racially inte- grated. Many of our classes studied the issue, and almost everyone is affected by it. T mu m If II ., ' - Hal N . - , . LI... - --u u. w- 3 any m;w ans. Him - . m m m , GEORGE JONES. Asst.
