Hughes High School was named after a quiet cobbler. Mr. Thomas Hughes. He lived in the early 1800's and was responsible for the founding of one of Cincinnati's first public high schools. Before his death i115 1824. Mr. Hughes composed a will leaving his property to the city of Cincinnati. It was his desire for property to be used for the education of poor children. In 1845. a lot was purchased on Ninth Street between Race and Vine. On September 16. 1851, Hughes High School was entered as a free public school . Picture $1 Pg. 4; On June 17. 1852, Hughes High School relocated to Fifth Street. oppo- site Mound Street. The first class to graduate here was in 1854 - four boys and six girls. The very first graduating class, 1851 were four young ladies: Francis Ellen Cassatl. Elizabeth Haw- ley. Amelia Burgess and Zulia Bying- ton. Picture $F2: Again in 1910, Hughes moved its location to where it stands today, 2515 Clifton Avenue. In 1924, a new wing was added to the building, known as the Annex. In 1966. for construction of a new gymnasium - Auditorium, prop- erty on Stratford Avenue was bought. The building, Kreuck Center, was completed in 1970. In September, 1975, the beautiful Vocational Educa- tion Building was finished and students attended it.
