GLVGIHNATIJ 4 Opening Section Hughes High School was named after a quiet cobbler. Mr. Thomas Hughes. He lived in the early 1800's and was responsible for the founding of one of Cincinnati's first public high schools. Before his death i115 1824. Mr. Hughes composed a will leaving his property to the city of Cincinnati. It was his desire for property to be used for the education of poor children. In 1845. a lot was purchased on Ninth Street between Race and Vine. On September 16. 1851, Hughes High School was entered as a free public school . Picture $1 Pg. 4; On June 17. 1852, Hughes High School relocated to Fifth Street. oppo- site Mound Street. The first class to graduate here was in 1854 - four boys and six girls. The very first graduating class, 1851 were four young ladies: Francis Ellen Cassatl. Elizabeth Haw- ley. Amelia Burgess and Zulia Bying- ton. Picture $F2: Again in 1910, Hughes moved its location to where it stands today, 2515 Clifton Avenue. In 1924, a new wing was added to the building, known as the Annex. In 1966. for construction of a new gymnasium - Auditorium, prop- erty on Stratford Avenue was bought. The building, Kreuck Center, was completed in 1970. In September, 1975, the beautiful Vocational Educa- tion Building was finished and students attended it. Picture $t3: In 1871. the Hughes Alumni placed a memorial in Spring Grove Ceme- taty. dedicated to Mr. Thomas Hughes. The ORTA Quarterly 1964-1971 Adviser. Counselor and Loyal Friend to Hundreds of Students Retired, June 1960 These words were taken from the Ohio Retired Teachers Association Quarterly: winter 1972. Written by one of Ms. Koppenhoefer's pupils of more than 25 years ago. Dr. Jack Freyhof. One of Cincinnati's most talented and celebrated teachers and writers has departed our midst. The enormity of the personal loss to so many Hughes High School graduates alone is reflected and estimated in the unusual honor bestowed upon Hazel Koppen- hoefer in 1960, on the occasion of her retirement from teaching: a testimo- nial with throngs of disciples in attendance and hundxeds more repre- sented by their letters, telegrams and gifts. 'Where a man has been given much, will be expected of him . Luke 12:48 NEB So it was with Hazel Koppenhoefer. ; We all knew of her many talents and gifts; we expected much, and we were never disappointed. Hazel Koppen- - hoefer lived a full life. She gave to 5 many of us happiness and visions of hope for our tomorrows . r f : EARTHBO .w- .Mx UND SPIRITS OF FLIGHT 1 iiN' ,-j v 2'4 Isak , 1 YEARNFOR FREEDOM. Harold Stier. was set up in such a way that participants com- peted not only against Their human oppo- nents, but against the computer as well, The machine, described the course $76 yards from hole, out-of-bounds to left and right, eth. and the player selected his club which he indicated by punching a certain number . The, computer could be programmed for an individual. for two-person competi- tion. or for a. special hole-in-one game. And you wondered what your teachers did during their lunch hour! , . h... I71 Facuiry TEACHER PROBATION OFFICERS The Teacher Probation Offi- cer program in Cincinnati orig- inated at Hughes. This was its second year in action. Volun- teers from the faculty worked with selected students to improve attendance and grades. The TPO also functioned as mediator between the student probationee and a teacher, or between the ptobationee and other students when problems arose. Most frequently, how- ever, the teacher probation officer served as a counselor who was more readily available to the student than a court- appointed probation officer would have been. When neces- sary. the teacher probation officer appeared in court with the student probationee to serve as a character witness and to give an account of the student's i . ..J M ,. academic and social progress at r t t h school. The program has met with such success at Hughes that h i kg; V other Cincinnati schools are . f , V .' ; now beginning their own pro- e grams, modeled after our own. h.h t if SITTING: Mr. Browne Jefferson. and Miss Dorothy Wells. The awards were an expres- sion of appreciation for their time and consideration during the 1975 school year. 174 WOMAN OF THE YEAR Honored by the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER as an Outstanding Woman of the Year, Mrs. Mattie Kinney is an example of hard work. determina- tion. involvement and family togetherness in cre- ating a successful life. Mrs. Kinney worked as a job placement spe- cialist at Hughes and gave realistic guidance to young minority adults in their life's goals and career outlooks. She devoted many hours to work- ing with the PTA, Big Sisters. Girl Scouts, Brown- ies. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Little League. However. her work in helping others did not end with young people. She also was a tireless worker for the NAACP, Mt. Auburn Employment Com- mittee, Urban League Guild. Avondale Commu- nity Council, Friends of Theater. Inc. , Catholic Interracial Council, WCET 4Sers, and the Lincoln Heights Cancer Detection Center. In 1975 she almost single-handedly secured the largest single amount ever allotted from the Ohio American Cancer Society when she received $28,500 for the screening of low-income black women in Lincoln Heights for breast cancer. She is the mother of eight and grandmother of four. Among her many honors she was named Mother of the Year in 1969. CoFChaixman of the Hamilton County Cancer Crusade in 1974 and she was also one of the first to be listed as 3 Who's Who among Black Americans. - Joan Nathanson CINCINNATI ENQUIRER tused with permissiom Congratulations, Mrs. Kinney.
