Dupree, who comes to Hughes from Taft High School. Mr. Dupree keeps busy every day with the tasks of supervising the entire staff of teachers and guiding the student body. Mr. Dupree believes that social functions should be held at school as long as students act in a mature way. As a result, for the first time in several years, Hughes has had dances at night following ball games. 19 Adminislralive Five Assisi Principal Mr. Dupree has five well-qualified assistants to perform various duties under him. Together they make an outstanding administrative team for Hughes High SchooL Mr. Charles Williams is in charge of the ninth grade; Mr. Obadiah Williams, tenth grade; Mr. Robert Galvin, eleventh grade; and Mr. Major McNeil, twelfth grade. Mrs. Mary Baughman serves in a new capacity this Mary Baughman 20 year, that of administrator for the Vocational Education Program. Mr. Galvin and Mr. McNeil are new this year. This was because class time for regular courses had to be reduced to only three quarters. To fill the other quarter, students had to be placed in mini- courses, other short-term courses, or study hall. Also, new programs, like vocational education and DPPF, were included in student scheduling this year. In addition to guiding students into suitable programs, the counselors spend much time in advising them about their problems. Mr. Gordon, the newest member of the counseling staff, works with certain ninth, tenth and eleventh graders. as does Miss Reed. Mrs. Chale and Mr. Bruemmer advise seniors and certain juniors. Mr. Phillips works with certain students in grades nine and ten. Mrs. Powell and Mr. Cloud offer vocational guidance. Mr. Stapanian coordinates all activities. Students were intrigued by the program and asked how they could join Many people thought that the Center was just for students who were experiencing troubles in their studies. 0n the contrary, the Center was open to anyone who might benefit from additional instruction and vocational information. Many students joined the program for enrichment purposes. The Center offered opportunities for learning in many subjects. New materials used by the Center included slides. filmstrips, movies, transparencies. pamphlets. tapes, books, and programmed materials. Channel Nine News taped sessions from the Lear- ning Center to present on its six o'clock news report. Activities were also taped for use in education classes at the University of Cincinnati. Several U. C. students worked as tutors in the Center. Geared to vocational needs. the Vocational Educa- tion Program attracted many students. This curriculum offered such courses as Teacher Aide, Child Care, Construction Technology, Health Careers, and Commercial Hospitality, most of which met for three bells each day. The Teacher Aide class went on assignment to various schools in the community. Students actually worked as teacher aides in the classrooms at Saint Monica, Saint George, Clifton, and Fairview Schools. The Child Care class was assigned to various day care centersthroughout the community and started helping at the centers soon after school began Iastfall. Building a house in the old boyst gym was the main project of the Construction Technology class. In Commercial Hospitality. students learned about hospitality for profit. Health Careers students set up a replica of an infirmary in order to practice duties of people in various health careers. Prac- tically all students are potential automobile drivers. What they learn in class about handling a car and driving defensively, courteously, and safely prepares them for the future. Richard Krieger Huey Newsom Membership in industrial arts classes is no longer limited to young men. Girls are finding that the classes have value for them, too. New courses have been added to the curriculum- automotive engines and photography. Work in elec- tricity, woods, metals, and graphic arts shops gives students vocational training as well as skills for use in the home. Many career-minded young men study mechanical drawing and architectural design. Clifford Eng Vilal DPPF Classes Are the Answer The DPPF Program, coordinated by Mr. Frazier, is designed primarily for tenth graders. Remediation, enrichment, and motivation are the goals of the program here at Hughes. Its main objectives are to prevent loss of credit and to provide a different reaming environment with the school for pupils who reject traditional routines and methods of teaching. Many hours during class and, if necessary, after school were spent working toward making this Annual the greatest possible success. Since most staff members could not be scheduled for the third quarter, a few had the responsibility of meeting the final deadline on April 1. Sorting the hundreds of pictures taken for the Annual offered the staff many fun-filled hours. Then back to work! Debra and Jack headed a great staff. 89 90 Review 0! It was necessary to keep two separate staffs in operation throughout the year. Michelle Witcher, editor-in-chief for the second year. supervised both staffs. The fourth quarter proved fruitful for both jounalisrn classes. Radio-taped and video-taped reports were oftered in the place of the regular publication. Radio announcements were made over the Public Address system during homeroom and at the close of the day. Video-taped reports were offered after school in room 301 for interested students. Use of these variations gave jounalism students experience in all phases of news reporting. To give students added insight into the production of a newspaper, the two-and-a-hatf bell journalism class toured the Post and Times-Star. 93 Baby Day Means Fun for Class of '71 Look at our bashful little girl!
