Excerpis from Valedic+ory Address. given by Miss Alice Brand. Class of '65, 3? fhe Commencemenf Exercises in Music Hall, on June I5. I965. lCompleie speech, page l72.l Commencemenf is, in a very real sense. Hie beginning of many new experiences. H is +he beginning of our ac- ceptance ini'o +he aduH world, H is l'he beginning of a new freedom +0 direc+ our own ac+ions. H is Jrhe beginning of a new responsibility 'For our own financial and social inde- pendence. Bui. mosf of all. Commencemenl- is +he beginning of our search for our purpose in life. Purposeiul living is based on an undersfanding of four poin'rs: where we are, who we are. where we are going. and how we hope i'o gef +here. i . . First where are we? We are in a universe which chalw lenges us on +0 more and more explora+ion. We live in a greaf na+ion, which is siill plagued wi+h problems of poverly and civil righls. . . . Looking backward. we can see +ha+ we. as gradua'l'ing seniors. have walked a fairly common pafh. . . . Looking forward. we see +ha+ soon Hie road will diverge. opening lo each of us new oppor+uni+ies. Bu'l before we choose a palh- way, we musl. first have a lhorough undersfancling of ourselves. . . . Who are we. anyway? You mighf say we are a combina- l'ion of inl'eresls and abilities, successes and failures, likes and dislikes, fears and hopes. . . . In any event who we are-as shown by our inieresis and abilifiesedefermines where we are going. Then, where are we going? Soon +he Class of '65 will scaHer: some +0 +ake iobs. some +0 go info milifary service, some i'o be married, and some 10 pursue l'heir educai'ion in college or elsewhere. YeiL regardless of whai' our Fu+ure plans may be. we all need a vision and a goal. . . . However. if we are no+ willing +0 supplemeni our visions wi'lh effeclive work, +hey will never be realized. And, of course, when our visions are nof real goals, bui rafher idle wishes. +hey will never. never come +rue. . . . Now +ha+ we have analyzed who we are. where we are. and where we are going, we come +0 +he final quesfion: How do we gef +here? Furfher educafion. whefher a+ college or in +he world. is +he firsl slep foward achievement . . . H follows, +hen, +ha+-+he second s+ep +oward our achieve- menf is work 1For H is +hrough work ihaf we pu'r our knowl- edge info prac+ice. . . . Finally. all our knowledge. all our plans. and all our work. s+ill do no'r insure us of'discovering a frue purpose. For we may become easily discouraged. Our vision may somefimes be dimmed by adversiiy. We may have l'o modify our dream. ' Yei Jrhere is one facf of which we may be sure. There is a- God of infinife power and love who cares aboui us. Through Him. our failures, our blunders. our +rials and our fears are Jmansiormed inl'o Jrhe very sfepping-sfones of achievement And +hrough Him. we can discover +he finesl' purpose in our lives.
