' The words that best describe Mr. Sutton are dpdicated, competent, friendly, and dignified. He is a source of inspiration and guidance for his co-operative faculty, as well as for the Hughes students. Mr. Sutton,s family consists of his wife and two children, a son attending Walnut Hills and a daughter attending Withrow. As a very busy administrator, he finds little time to pursug hi5 hobbies of golf, howling ahd swimming. The key to Mr. Suttmfs success is his in- terest in students, his desire for achieve- ment, and his willingness to devote time and effort to a worthwhile cause. Mr. Sutton, Chief Executive of Hughes High School Mr. Jones, Efficient Mr. Jones, the administrative assistant principal, has a variety of responsibilities, some of which are curriculum planning, teacher appraisal, supplies, lockers and textbooks. Mr. Jones says he enjoys his new position this year because he gets an over-all view of the student body. When Mr. Jones can find time to spare from his daily duties, he enjoys reading and fishing. He is also a member of the Cincinnati Schoohnasters Bowling League. Mr. Stillwell, Experienced A new addition to the competent leadership of the Hughes edministration is Mr. Stillweli, assistant principal of the Juhior high. Before coming to Hughes, he Was assistant principal at Cutler Junior High School. In his first year here, he has gained the respect of students and teachers alike. Mr. StillwelPs hobby is traveling. Last summer, he traVeIed to Quebec. Canada, the New York World's Fair, and parts of New England. His main enjoyment is working with junior high students. 15 Mr. Hobson, Energetic Mr. Hobson, senior high assistant principal, is one of the busiest persons around Hughes. He laughingly admits that his job consists of iia little bit of everything! Primarily, he deals with the senior high school-enrollment, attendance, activities, and the senior class. He is usually the flrst person that newly-enrolied pupils meet, and he gives a final approval on fulfilling obligations before seniors receive diplomas. Mr. Hohson has been associated with Hughes for many years. Many students Cherish the helpful advice given them by senior high and junior high counselors. No other school is served by a more dedicated staff of ad- visers. They make deserving students aware of scholarship help that is avail- able. The time counselors spend after schooi is inestimable. May they continue molding Hughes students into responsi- ble citizens of tomorrow. OTHERS OTHERS AND CDOD-WILL These keys represent the purposes and benefits of participating in the many Clubs and activities of Hughes. Drawn together by common interests, students form and strengthen friendships as they cooperate in plans and projects. Many hours after school are spent by teachers and students doing things together that they enjoy maybe singing, maybe acting, perhaps listening to a guest speaker, or just having a party. The various organizations provide a welcome change from the seriousness of classroom work. After a hard day, relaxation and fellowship are sought in the clubs. Stage Crew Fr0nt: F. Kirchgcssner, J. Success of Hughes Nine Depends on Sophomore Potential After a 1964 season of sixteen wins and fifteen losses, the Hughes baseball team hapes for an improve6 record this year. The many sophomores on the 365 team lack experience, but Coach Otto expects returning senior lettermen Ron Smith, Harry Vogel and Rick Salter to provide enough poise and leadership to spark the Big Reds to another championship. Hughes traditionally has winning seasons in baseball. The Big Reds pIay all their Public High School rivals and also such other teams as Covington Holmes, Ludlow, Newport Catholic, and Oak Hills. The ,65 schedule will test the talent of Mr. Ottoys miamond Darling? as they have been calledH. Coagh Otto talks with Sam Kimble while other team members discuss coming season. Individual students earn points for participation and performance. Awards are macie at the athletic assembly held late in the year. Some of the most popular sports are basketball, volleyball, touch football, water-polo, and softball. Girls also enjoy roller-skating, golf, and bowling. Both team sports and individual sports are included. The busy sponsors not only supervise the various sports- and prepare Hughes girls for the public high school play- days but also assist with the fund'raising projects, such as, the hMr. and Miss Hughes Dance and the annual bake sale and apple sale. Climaxing a full schedule of fun and work, the event of the year took place. Instead of hockey they play soccer, which cnnsists of eleven girls on each team. Practice, under the supervision of Mrs. McKibben, developed some good soccer players among the junior high. girls. At the Playday, held at Western Hills High School, the Hughes girls won two games, lied one, and lost one. Vblleyball Instead of the eight-player modified game with substitution at half-time, the offlcial six-player game with continuous substiiulion was installed this year. As usual, Hughes look first place at the Playday. Girls in the Swim Splash Their Way To Fun and F itness Tennis Mrs. Libbert teaches the girls early Monday mornings basic fundamentals, such as serving, playing doubles and singles, and keeping score. On Thursday, Octo- ber 29, 1964-, the girls attended a Play- day held at Withrow. As in the past, Hughes' girls did a fine job, having three wins and one tie. Basketball Girlssy basketball has become more like the hoyg basketball. This year, along with the roving guard and roving forward. the game started with a center jump instead of the center throw-jn. Maybe, soon, the girls will have indefinite dribble. 152. Archery For the first time, commencing at 7:30 am. on Wednesdays, archery continued throughout the school year. This gave interested girls a greater opportunity to better their skills in this individual sport. The Junior High Student Council is an organization set up to promote better citizenship and good-will among junior high school students. Early each fall there is a general election in each junior high home mom to choose a person capable of representing his home room well. After the election, the representatives meet to discuss and- propose new ideas on how to better the junior high. They do this work under the able supervision of their sponsor, Mr. J ames Bruck. Last fall the Junior High Student Council sponsored a dance held in the girls, gym. Although the dance was a suc- cess, the Council felt that more junior high school students should have participated-especially boys. Membership in Junior High Choir, under the direction of MiSS Josephine Barker, inspires the students of Hughes Junior High School to fuller participation in good music and greater appreciation of it. Each year Miss Barker holds auditions to choose seventh and eighth graders who like to sing and who have voices capable of benefitting from the training received in eighth and ninth grade choirs. With daily practice and many oph portunitics for concerts at school assemblies and 'in public programs, choir members learn a great deal of music and develop poise on the stage.
