Suttridqe We Study History in '60 But We Forge the Future The Social Studies Department at l-lughes gives the stu- dents an understanding and appreciation ot our democratic government and its leaders. Good citizenship and the prac- tical application ot social studies in solving problems is stressed. Students preparing tor college are given a good background in economics, sociology and history. The curriculum includes geography, history, and civics tor junior high students. Senior high subiects are world history, world geography, American history, American government, American problems, and economics and sociology. Interest in current events and toreign attairs is stimulated in the Fireside College and the Junior Council on World Attairs. The Fireside College, a current events club, is spon- sored by Mrs. Lenore Follinger. The Junior Council on World Attairs, under the sponsorship ot lvlr. Gray, helps to develop in students a desire to understand the happenings ot the world. lvlr. Arthur Gray heads the social studies department. l-le is well-qualitied tor this position, with a B.A. degree trom Indiana State Teachers College and a lvlaster's Degree trom the University ot Chicago. Mr. Gray has taught at l-lughes tor the last twelve years. A clear knowledge ot history, geography, and govern- ment is necessary it nations are to live in peace during the Sparkling Sixties.
