Mathematics Leads to Advancement in Today's World I wonder who invented this qadqetl ixuth A, Aiiutin I' nald W. Some sort ot math is always appearing in our daily experi- ences. I-lughes' Mathematics Department realizes the im- portance ot math and otters many splendid courses to teach the student the basic tundamentals and also more advanced concepts ot mathematics. The Mathematics Department introduces its courses in the junior high school where arithmetic courses are required ot all students in the seventh and eighth grades. ln the upper grades, students who plan a career in the business world atter high school, rather than college, might include in their schedules general mathematics, business mathematics, and consumer mathematics. The latter two courses are devoted to the study ot the uses ot mathematics as in insurance, taxation, and buying, trom the point ot view ot both busi- ness and consumer. For those students preparing tor col- lege, the Mathematics Department otters tirst year algebra, plane geometry, Math lll, which includes second year alge- bra and trigonometry, and Math IV, including trigonometry, solid geometry, and advanced algebra. I-lughes also otters an accelerated course in mathematics tor gualitied students. This course provides tor them the chance tor advanced place- ment in mathematics in college. This year, tor the tirst time, the accelerated classes in all the high schools are receiving instruction on television two days a weelc trom Dr. Gaylord Merriman, head ot the Mathematics Department at the Unis versity ot Cincinnati. Students talcing Math lll or Math IV are encouraged to ioin Math Club under the sponsorship ot Miss Austin and Miss Kloalc. The club's activities include speakers and stu- dent presentations on subiects concerning mathematics. The Mathematics Department at I-lughes is training its students so that they will be able to meet successtully any experiences with mathematics that they encounter during and atter the Sparlcling Sixties. Mr. John Purcell and Mrs. Gwendolyn McCullough acquainT Their sTudenTs wi+h The culTures of many Spanish- spealcing counTries, in addiTion To Teaching The language iTselT. Recordings play an imporTanT parT in many OT The lan- guage classes. Through The use of Them, sTudenTs hear The language spolcen by naTives oT The foreign counTries and Thereby learn The correcT pronunciaTions. Mr. Purcells classes. in addiTion, had The unique experience of Tape-re- cording Their own voices in Spanish and Then hearing The recordings Tor The purpose of correcTing errors.
