Mr. Ben Fulks, Assistant Principal, is a friend of all Hughes students. He is sponsor of Hughes Club, super- visor of the Book Shop, Where school supplies are sold, in charge of lunchline guards, and director of money col- lections. He also finds time to take care of the Visual Aid program, student lockers and textbooks, and ushers. Yet, busy as he is, he is always ready to help those in need of advice. No one who passes through Hughes High School can fail to appreciate the warmth and friend- liness Mr. Fulks has for every sincere and well-meaning student. MR. BEN F. FULKS Assistant Principal Miss Margaret Hall, Dean of Girls, helps solve the personal, educational and vocational problems of all Senior High girls. Her soft-spoken, understanding advice is fast becoming a legend at Hughes. Through her, schol- arships are obtained by worthy studentsg through her, daughters and parents are given a more acute aware- ness of the purpose of the school and its place in their lives. From the routine of tardiness and absence excuses, to the vitally important plans for college or work, from early morning to late afternoon, Miss Hall devotes her full time to guiding her girls through the maze that is adolescence. Your theme "Venture into Space"! What a host of ideas rush in to find place in one's thinking! The times seem to call to the venturesome soul to do the unusual in the year of l957. The young are contin- ually asked to reach out beyond the usual, the normal, to a realm forever dynamic and changing. lt is like standing on a high pinnacle, looking out into outer space and wondering just what lies beyond. Your high school preparation, as you look out, will necessarily direct your ambitious spirit somewhere toward the hills ahead. He- member, beyond the clouds may lie your destiny. This destiny may be a glorious one for you. You may reach, 12 Mr. Kizer and Jimmy Mr. Elmer Kizer, Principal of Hughes High School, and his grandson jimmy symbolize the relationship be- tween youth and experience that makes education mean- ingful. Wise leadership, pa- tient guidance and sympa- thetic understanding have brought us to the edge of toe morrow. Because we are able to face the unknown with confidence and faith in our- ourselves, we say, "Thank you, Mr. Kizerf' as it were, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. This l wish for you. All of. you will, of necessity, strike out on some cou- rageous mission, the end of which you cannot now fore- see. Strike out is the call. Your success or failure may be determined by how well you are prepared, how much determination you have to succeed, and how long you are willing to wait for ultimate results. It is a venturous excursion into the outer space filled with the realities of life. My wish for you is that you have the spirit of adventure backed by as good prepara- tion as Hughes has been able to give you. -Elmer W. Kizer
