Thomas Hughes was a Triend- less unhappy man, who leTT his naTive England To seTTle in CincinnaTi. Here he TerminaTed The span oT an unevenTTul liTe, and wenT To his Tinal resTing place more Than one hundred TwenTy years ago. ln a will wriTTen shorTly beTore his deaTh, he leTT his properTy To be used Tor The educaTion oT poor children. This bequesT has made The name oT Hughes lcnown To Thousands, and The man who was Torlorn and unbeTriended many years ago is now respecTed and cher- ished in The hearTs oT many. The privaTe insTiTuTion oT Woodward College was The TirsT To beneTiT by The esTaTe. The income Trom The properTy was used in The educaTion OT needy pupils. ln I85l, The Hughes Fund and The Woodward Fund were consolidaTed, and The Queen CiTy's TirsT Two public high schools were esTablished under The Union Board oT High Schools. The TirsT class com- mencemenT exercises were held in July, l852, aT Greenwood Hall. An imposing Tour pupils, all Trom Hughes, received diplomas! They had all been sTudenTs oT The CenTral School which was rechrisTened wiTh The name oT The English cobbler. The Tollowing year a building was erecTed aT FiTTh STreeT near Mound, and lvlr. H. H. Barney, The TirsT principal, moved The school To The new lo- caTion. Years passed, and anoTher principal Mr. E. W. Coy, was also To have his school change posiTions. This Time, iT was To a maiesTic Tudor ediTice on The corner oT Clif- Ton Avenue and Mclvlillan STreeT. The new sTrucTure cosT Sl,O00.000 and housed l,5OO pupils. ln T925 iTs size increased wiTh The addiTion oT a new wing, and Thus we Find our Hughes High School oT The presenT day. IT is a Truly magniTicenT realizaTion OT The dreams OT Thomas Hughes, and a mighTy and serviceable monumenT To his memory. l

Bowers, in physical educafion, coaches many of fhe feams. There is no picfure here of Mr. Frank P. Brown who feaches mafhemafics. Mr. Rea W. Brown is a new member of fhe Hughes Music Deparfmenf, having charge of fhe direcfion of fhe band. Miss Alma Burke has classes in secrefarial pracfice and ofher commercial subiecfs. Mr. Daniel L.
