A HISTORY OF HUGHES Over a cen+ury ago. a man neifher greaf nor rich. died on December 26. I824. He was a cobbier; his name. Thomas Hughes. AT his deafh he was able To provide for +ha+ of which he had always dreamed. Tree educafion for The children of Cincinnafi. The following year sfudenfs moved in+o +he newly comple+ed building a+ FiH'h and Mound. The original name of Hughes High School was Cen+ral School. H was opened. wifh Mr. H. H. Barney a5 iJrs principal. in Jrhe basemen+ of Jrhe Lu+heran Church on Walnuf Sireef in I847. The foliowing year ii moved Jro Longworfh Sfreef beiween Race and Elm. AHer I851 if was known as Hughes High School and soon moved info HS new residence. Mr. Barney was principal a+ Hughes for one more year. He Jrhen became Sfafe School Commissioner. Following Mr. Barney were R. Cyrus Knowlion and Dr. J. L. Thornfon. In December l873 Mr. E. W. Coy Jrook over his du+ies as principal from Mr. John M. Edwards. Mr. Coy remained Jrhe principal unJril l9l9 when Mr. C. M. Merry was appoinfed. Toward The end oer.Coy15 Jrerm of service Hughes once again changed ifs address.
