THOMAS HUGHES BEQUEATHED HIS PROPERTY IN I824 TO THE CAUSE OF FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION The Goddess We Adore A cobbler dreamed, And in his mind an idea sparlcled, glowed With hope, and burst into the flame of sweet Reality. The dream of Thomas Hughes Now stands with tower aloft and flag awave To typify the greatness of a land That talces a pride in malcing dreams come true. For Thomas Hughes, as other men had found A continent and built a mighty land., Began foundations for a school -a school That would in time achieve his dream of free And widespread, public education. First The school that bears his name was built within The basin of his city's seven hills. But, as it grew with every passing year, As larger numbers sought its offered lore, His work became too great to stay confined Within such narrow limits. Then the school Attained its present site, and year on year Increased in size and strength and power. Four score And nine the years that grace its simple name.
