THOMAS HUGHES BEQUEATHED HIS PROPERTY IN I824 TO THE CAUSE OF FREE PUBLIC EDUCATION The Goddess We Adore A cobbler dreamed, And in his mind an idea sparlcled, glowed With hope, and burst into the flame of sweet Reality. The dream of Thomas Hughes Now stands with tower aloft and flag awave To typify the greatness of a land That talces a pride in malcing dreams come true. For Thomas Hughes, as other men had found A continent and built a mighty land., Began foundations for a school -a school That would in time achieve his dream of free And widespread, public education. First The school that bears his name was built within The basin of his city's seven hills. But, as it grew with every passing year, As larger numbers sought its offered lore, His work became too great to stay confined Within such narrow limits. Then the school Attained its present site, and year on year Increased in size and strength and power. Four score And nine the years that grace its simple name. The school of Thomas Hughes-yet more than iust A school - a democratic land it is, Wherein are citizens and government, A counterpart of these United States. -R. P. Hughes High School at Fifth and Mound Streets

ci..z,,f,f. m.ff..ff, ww., O close was the welfare of Hughes High School and its large family of teachers and students, past and present, to the heart of Mrs. Merry that the entire school bowed in grief and sympathy at her passing. Hughes-its far reaching prob- lems and interests, the joys and tragedies of those whose lives were intertwined with its long history - was ever the subiect of her constant and loving thought. Therefore Hughes offers tribute to that much loved woman. Not only Hughes feels that loss but also a beloved family, and a legion of devoted friends feel that the world is a much poorer, drearier place without the presence of that valiant generous soul. Her closest and deepest interest was her home and the loved ones who belonged to that home. She was the center whence radiated the loving inspiration that sent forfh all members of that family, trained and prepared, to take their places and make a worthy contribution to society. But she was never unmindful of that larger circle, her friends, whose lives she touched through her many worthy activities. There were scores who turned to her in the midst of life's sorrows, perplexities, and doubts for advice, comfort, and sympathetic understanding. She never failed them. She was deeply religious but unostentatious in her devotion, and gave unstintingly to the needs of the church in its varied fields of activity. A most sensitive conscience governed her deeds and words, and the still small voice never with her went un- heeded. Her religious convictions tar exceeded the restrictions of one fold. In true charity she extended the hand of fellowship to all she met on life's way. Through many other contacts she rounded out a full and satisfying life. An alert appreciative mind: artistic capable hands, always busy on some lovely creation, never for herself, always for the ioy of others: a spirit filled with understanding sympathy and selfless devotion: a courageous heart: and with all a sparkling sense of humor made up an unusual personality. Contact with her was like a kindly blessing from heaven, refreshing, inspiring, invigorating. All who have felt the benediction of that presence know that something has gone which can never be replaced. May Hoban Siehl
