TIME tears page after page from the calendar; Hughes High School writes page after page in its history. In 1831 the noble dream and generous gift of Thomas Hughes, cobbler and philanthropist, planted the seed of the school which was to bear his name, the school to be designated as one of Cincin- natfs hrst free high schools. For 21 season the seed lay idle. At last the building at Fifth and Mound Streets Opened its doors to students. Year after year Hughes blossomed, and bore fruit in steadily increasing groups of graduates. In 19Io a larger building at Clifton and McMillan Streets began a new period in its service to the community. SEPTEMBER turns to June; freshman becomes graduate, As time tears pages from her calendar, Hughes plans new chapters for her future. Summer after summer has shone upon her tower; winter after winter has whitened her terrace; year after year Hughes has stood true to her watchword: ccDeo et Patrizef . 13 g
