PRESERVING THE VIKING LEGACY.” dwells on remembering and preserving the memories of the past year at Huffman High School. Our goal is to recollect the fun times had this year in one volume, while at the same time appreciating a little of our Viking heritage. Our memories of Huffman are treasures we will cherish for years, for they will be forever embedded in our minds. We will be able to open our yearbooks in the future and laugh at the pictures of old friends or satisfy our yearning to look back at the past to reflect on old times. We will. In the future, be able to recount the events gone by . . the plays, pep rallies, exams. Homecoming, the Prom, sports, and club activities. These various aspects of school will always fill our minds with pride and spirit in our high school, as well as entertain us in the years to come. Rick Renshaw STUDENT A Junior once did the unforgivable by parking m a Senior space So. his little Honda was literally “picked Up” and “politely moved by a select group of Senior . This was one incident that occurred after numbered park ing spaces were assigned'to the students. Corresponding numbered stickers were placed on “the left side of the vehicle’s bumper. Seniors had priority over space assignments, so they never worried about not being able to pur chase parking places. Both Seniors and. Juniors seemed happy not to have to hurry to school, just to find a place to park. Some Juniors complained'about “belated” sixteenth birthdays since the purchasing of spaces had been done early In the first weeks of school and they would have to wait for the next year or for spaces to come available. Sophomores and Freshmen could hot purchase stickers, not only because most were not old enough to drive, but ' because there were not enough parking areas to accommodate them. It was a new .concept to get used to, yet it benefited, not to mention relieved, the majority. ; v;r. . Jj, • - ■ '. ) 1,v.'• ■: v Kayron Prevail 1 STUDENT Wm $ was the year of the restored locker . What a it was for students to find clean, freshly painted lockers wtth built-in locks. The price for the lockers, four dollars, was also an unexpected surprise. For an additional shock students were assigned “locker periods. times before school, between study and lunch, and after school when they could go to their lockers. The majority of students were pleased with the slight modification of the locker rules and adjusted well to the'concept of “restored lockers. T racie Sides HUFFMAN VIKING BAND The Huffman Marching Band was invited to perform at Auburn's open ing game against Southwestern Louisiana. on September 7. 1985, a special honor given after 8 years of superior awards at marching and concert programs under the direction of Mr. Clifford M. Winter ill. After Auburn's 49 7 win over Southwestern, the Huffman High School Marching Band combined with mutft 5T r OPENS AUBURN SEASON Mr the Opelika High School Band from Opelika, Alabama, and the Hardaway High School Band from Columbus. Georgia, to form a 400 piece ensemble that played the Auburn fight song. The Marching Band represented Huffman High School well In a great show of spirit and discipline by the entire organization. Jennifer McGough CHORAL ■ Anyone could sing a solo, but having an award-winning choir took a group effort The commitment of purpose was obviously necessary - of dedication to a goal — of school spirit — °f persona! achievement. And often the effort required went beyond singing When new chairs were needed in the practice room, or new choir robes were needed for concerts. the choir achieved their goal through group effort. Hours were given to fund-raising projects and hours given to practice A commitment of the group was given to common goals the personal pride In a job well done and the pride of Huffman High In a group of its own who gave so generously of their talents. WE RE THE SENIORS OF 86!’ We. the seniors of 1986. saw many changes that we will remember for a long time o come. For instance, for two years we had been engaged in the parking war out hi the parking lot. It was always First come, first served.” if we weren't here by 7:30 in the morning, our chances of getting a good place to park were slim or nil. If we were unfortunate enough to be late, we might as well have parked over In front of Bargain Town, but. in 1986 we were assigned parking spaces and I.D. stickers to solve the problem. Also, we were '‘given (for four bucks) lockers with built-in combination Jocks. A rare oddity occurred when the seniors weren't able to win a pep rally for the first five games It looked as though we were going to repeat our freshman year; remember how “fun that was? But after some reorganizing and regrouping, and a little help from the spirit committee bakery, we managed to win. That was nice, considering we were shut out for five attempts by people such as Pee Wee Herman. Rocky Balboa.” Crockett and Tubbs, “Colonel Sanders. and Buckwheat. But our Joy of victory didn’t last long; we must have been taboo for the football team because they lost their first game on the same day. Not only will we remember the changes, but memories of other things will always be present in our minds, such as old coke and new coke, the Miami Vice clothes styles, and Bobby Smiles. As we prepare to start new lives, some of us reluctantly, we will always remember the fads, fashions, activities, and friendships that we left behind as our legacy to Huffman. Rick Renshaw RIOR AND MAIDEN Being involved In music was Craig's chief interest at Huffman He was a member of the Symphonic and Marching Band for three years, the Stage Band for two years, and participated In numerous honor bands, including the All-State Band. In addition to instrumental music, his interest expanded into Choral, where he was a member of Mixed Ensemble and Concert Choir. As a result of his vast musical talent, he was chosen to take part In the Alabama Choir Explosion Ensemble. a great honor for a choir member in Alabama. Apart from the everyday trauma of school life — the pop test , the homework, the term paper — there Is, for tome, that added burden of school activities Now. not to be misunderstood, some of these organizations are a real service to the school and community. Take Homecoming week, for example. Just imagine how droll our football season would be without those few days when sign hanging, class competition and a community favorite, the parade, dominate our thoughts And what of our school's publication giants — the Valhalla and the Valkyrie? When The Enquirer just won't do. our students neturaDy tum to the annual and school paper for the scoop A brief glance around our Institution will Justify the need for a Senior Project Committee to Insure the school's adequate repair As for the community desire for theatrical enlightenment, the Drama Department sure fills the bill with It several annual presentations Yet. we mustn't fall to mention the very organization which binds our diverse student body together, the group responsible for this year's many activities and dances — yes, the Student Government Association. In addition to these, we have those activities which allow Huffman's representation tn fields of competition throughout the city, state, and Southland. The band, with Its troupe of Valorettes and Color Guard, has proved its ability, as has our Choral department, winning more than As share of awards. For those more academically inclined, there are our fine Math. Debate, and Academic teams, many of whose members enjoy the Intellectual fellowship of the National Honor Society. And. besides, how else could we receive those precious green and orange helmets at report card time Or. Mrs. Finch, for her hard work and support. She has dedicated much time and effort into making this annual possible. We Love You! The Staff After a three day seminar In the summer on How to put a yearbook together.” the 1985-86 Valhalla staff was really looking forward to beginning a new school year. The entire staff just couldn't wait to dig In. But they all soon discovered there was more to putting an annual together than most people could ever imagine. Deadlines had to be met. So many hours were spent on pictures and layout designs, not to mention the time spent working up copy or captioning pictures. Much time was spent drawing and redrawing all year. But all that overtime paid off; the 1986 VALHALLA was the evidence. The pride experienced from putting together this collection of the 1986 school year was enough reward for the work and trying times we all suffered. If successful in the Miss Valhalla and the Miss Alabama Pageants, the winner will compete for the title of Miss America. In the Miss Valhalla Pageant, the girls are judged in four categories: personal interview, evening gown, talent, and swimsuit. Another benefit brought about by the fact that Miss Valhalla is a preliminary to Miss Alabama is that the current Miss Alabama, Angela Tower, came to emcee and entertain In the past, girls such as April Southard, Cynthia Lamar, Sabra McLean, Susan Ingrum, Angela Callahan, and Kim Jaynes have competed in the Miss Alabama Pageant and have done well. Huffman’s Academic Team, however, has found an alternative to this process. By applying daily lessons to a game, the members of the Academic Team have discovered that learning can be fun as well as fulfilling. This year's Academic Team was made up of ten students who were chosen because of their academic achievements. Team selection took place at the beginning of the school year. It is a tradition that wouldn't be possible without the dedication of the Senior Project Committee. The members of the committee. through persistent peddling of their TOM-WAT boxes, do a great service: they finance the Senior gift and replace the need for a Senior Fee. Among the Senior gifts from past graduating classes, there have been the paving of the Swamp, the placing of numerous sidewalks, and more recently the upgrading of the main parking lot. The decorating of the buildings on Sunday, October 20. was a great way to begin a week-long celebration, but this was only the beginning. On Wednesday the Homecoming Court was presented to the student body. The next activity to boost the students' spirit was the class relays which proved to be a very close and exciting victory for the Seniors. Thursday night brought sign hanging, the ever popular bonfire, a gym dance for everyone and a special time for the Seniors to be alone. Then came Friday. The pep rally was fantastic! In many opinions it was the best in at least four years. The Seniors were excited to find that not only had they won the pep rally, but they had won the Spirit trophy for the Homecoming week. After school, the floats left the parking lot and the parade was underway. The Valorettes. the Band, and the B Team Cheerleaders won first, second, and third places, respectively, in float decoration. However, the highlight of the week certainly came during half time at the football game. It was at this time that the 1985-86 Homecoming Queen was presented and crowned. Overall, Huffman's Homecoming of 1985-86 was truly an eventful and spectacular occasion. Debate provides a student with many skills that apply to everyday life, such as a better understanding of current events. Preparation for tournaments Is the avenue to winning, as exemplified by senior Daniel Wood. The dedication of Mrs. Askew has provided a strong foundation for debate at Huffman. Continuous work and much practice give our debators an edge over other schools. To be a winner, the debator must develop ex- cellent speaking skills, or all his hard work would be meaningless when he could not persuade a judge. 102 DEBATE TEAMS I The 1985-86 Huffman High School debate team upheld the winning tradition of the Viking legacy this year With impressive victories at the early tournaments. The Jr. ROTC program at Huffman High School provides more for the students than military training; it offers students practical knowledge of leadership and other areas to improve their education and enhance their study skills. Uniforms are provided free of charge and are worn once a week in preparation for the Veteran’s Day Parade and Annual Formal Inspection. A standard quality in a JROTC cadet is discipline, which is stressed in many ways throughout the course. It may be thought of as hard work, but overall it’s worth the effort. The skills ROTC members acquire are useful to the student now. and later in life. Huffman JROTC carries on the proud Huffman tradition in a noble way. Having journeyed far Into the heart of Alabama, members of the JROTC prepared to visit Jacksonville State University where they were trained in the use of firearms, hand to hand combat, and repelling. Yet. in recent years, our school has found a new source of springtime pride — our Soccer teams. Both teams played 12 games and participated in a City wide Tournament during their season which ran from mid-March to the end of April Although competition was fierce, our young teams' potential increased continually under the direction of Coaches B. R. Willtlams and Jerry Partridge. Under their guidance, the dedicated members of both teams strove to make their 1985-86 season a success The future seems certain to include winning soccer teams for the Huffman Vikings. Keith Hulsey. After many years of disap pointing rankings, a change for the better was welcomed by coaches and players alike. The Vikings surprised many teams that in the past had dominated Huffman on the courts by overpowering them on their way to a productive season. They continued to strive toward becoming a state power as they proudly carried on the winning Viking tradition. The team believed their hard work and dedication were responsible for their exciting season. MR. ALAN GILLESPIE TENNIS COACH THE 1985-86 GOLF TEAM Sam Mango. Brian Wallace. The Huffman High School Golf Team, under the direction of Major Lee Henderson, continued to have one exceptional season after another. Their season ran from the first of February to the first of March. During this time, the team participated in one or two matches per week with other high school teams at various golf courses in the city. The Regional Tournament. in which all high school teams competed for both individuals and team prizes, ended the golf season. Just FORE guys out for an afternoon of golf. But unfortunately four turnovers In the first quarter, including one returned by the Cougars. 86 yards for a touchdown, proved to be too much for the Viks to overcome, and the Cougars took a 25-7 half time lead. In the second half, penalties and turnovers plagued the Viks again as they could only score one touchdown on a 7 yard pass from Joe Greene to Vantrell Williams. During the 1985-86 school year the juniors added to the great Viking legacy by excelling in all activities of school. During the spirit competition, juniors let their spirit shine. With the aid of Ed Grimely, Crockett and Tubbs of Miami Vice, Gumby, Rocky, and the immortal Buckwheat, the juniors won the overall spirit award for the second year in a row. Way to go, spirit committee. In athletics, juniors played major roles. In football, Phillip Doyle’s kicking helped lead the mighty Vikings to the finals of the 6A State Championship. During the course of the season he set a national record for the most field goals in a season. Also In athletics, two juniors, Darrell Davis and A1 Weathers, made contributions in one of the best starts in Huffman’s basketball history, including victories over Carver and Woodlawn. Though the juniors had a great year, the new parking sticker regulation caused problems for some of them. Since juniors did not receive parking assignments until after seniors received theirs, several juniors were not able to park In the Huffman student lot. For those juniors who did get a parking sticker, their worries about parking were over. The ones less fortunate, however, did find adequate parking at Food World. In spite of the inconveniences they encountered the spirit of the juniors continued to help preserve the great traditions already established at Huffman High School. S. Ulmer, B. Cook. D Griffith. J. The spirit displayed by the sophomores shone through at the pep rallies in which they participated every week. Not only did they adapt to the routine of a pep rally, which includes the painting of signs beforehand, but they managed to win the spirit stick a time or two. They also contributed to an incredible 114 football season by supplying several varsity players from their class. But aside from spirit and sports, the sophomores became involved in many club activities available at Huffman which not only help the school, but the community at large as well. These accomplishments will not be forgotten so long as Valhalla continues to preserve the Viking lagacy. It was a period of major adjustment and adaptation. At the start of the year, the ninth graders were full of curiosity about such things as teachers, classes, and the many activities that are part of the school itself. This curiosity was the result of the anticipation of new experiences they would encounter. One of the major accomplishments of the freshmen was learning the often confusing bell schedule. There were many times a freshman would reveal his identity by standing up to leave at the half bell, while the upper-class laughed in hysterics. Also, there was the adjustment of getting around in the round buildings at Huffman. How many instances of tardiness were there at the beginning of the year when freshmen had to have someone help them to class? In spite of all the embarrassment, the freshmen of 1985-86 seemed eventually to fit in just as all of the other freshmen classes had in years past. The freshmen found themselves constantly tested, joked about, and made examples of. They had to master the routine of the school while at the same time discovering the tradition and pride of the school that makes Huffman so special. Overall, it was hectic, but the year turned out to be a major stepping stone into a brand new world that would prepare them for a challenging life ahead. Membership in clubs such as the Spanish dub. the French Club, and Latin Club affords good experiences for students because they allow students to explore and study new and different languages and cultures. There are also the French and Latin Honor Societies, extensions of the French and Latin Clubs composed of French and Latin Club honor students. The Science Club is a group of students who are very interested in Science and Science related topics. The H-Club is one in which you must have earned a letter to be a member. The Vik squad is important in that the group adds cheer and pep to the pep rallies and football games. Also is the Quest Club that studies Black History. All of these clubs and others help show Huffman's involvement in educational as well as extra-curricular activities. AGAPE, begins for girls their Junior years. The Junior AGAPE Club this year, as in every year, worked hard to demonstrate God's love to others. The name AGAPE, the Greek word for God’s unconditional love.suited this club perfectly because it not only provided a name for the group, but stated Its purpose as well. Junior AGAPE’s activities this past year were mostly service projects in which Huffman's girls, through the efforts of the club, showed their community how they really cared. The faculty have adapted to meet not only the academic, but also the emotional needs of their students. They have become more responsive to students' needs, which results in better teacher-pupil relationships. The amount of time and energy Invested by the teachers in their students Is overwhelming. Although frequently unappreciated, this devotion is one of the most important things we encounter in our high school years. Furthermore, it will prove invaluable in our future endeavors. Finch. Thanks for slicking by us through this hectic year. You have been a caring and sweet sponsor. You are also a great friend. Thanks for all of your love and support. We Love You! Kelly. Jennifer and Jeff A special I appreciate you to those students of the 1986 yearbook staff who persevered to the end. The ultimate com pletion of the VALHALLA is credited to: Sam Landman Jennifer McGough Kelly Trotman Jeff Shores Barry Adams Beth Laird Mike Smitherman Stephen Scott Tracie Sides Allen Staggs Yolanda Hopson Mike Culp Mrs. Finch To many people who live outside of Huffman, the word Viking doesn’t strike the chord it should. To them, a Viking was a sea raider, an inhabitant of frigid Scandinavia Yet we, on the 1985-86 Annual Staff, know better. For we have had the privilege this year of showing throughout the VALHALLA just how wrong they are. Some of these uninformed souls may believe that Viking music consisted of warriors blowing on cleaned animal horns. Yet we showed our Viking Band opening an Auburn game and competing with the state's best. Those not from Huffman may have read that the Vikings were some of the ablest administrators In Medieval Europe. We proved today’s Viks still able, as we watched this year’s students enjoying new lockers and an organized parking lot. An outsider might swear that Vikings played draughts and enjoyed mock battles. No Huffman student (nor one from J. O. Johnson) should make this error, for the Annual Staff covered one of our school’s greatest sports years ever. The VALHALLA Staff has put endless hours of effort into “Persevering the Viking Legacy.” A deserving thanks to Ms. Merrilyn Cook of Taylor Publishing Company for her assistance and helpfulness to the staff throughout the year. A personal thanks goes to Mrs. Kathy Finch, our sponsor, for her unselfish devotion to the production of the 1986 VALHALLA Words cannot adequately describe the work she had done to make this year's book the best. Jennifer McGough Barry Adams Deep in cherished southern lands, 3iere our noble Huffman stands, ffiead her, guide her, Lord we pray (Bive her courage day by day. {through the worst that may be fall her itet her youth stand straight and free, (Onward marching, ever seeking, ifionor, Truth, and Purity.
