These two outstanding Seniors are chosen by the faculty to represent the ideal Huffman student. Their selection is based upon leadership, character, overall contributions to student welfare, and continuous scholastic achievement. These traits exemplify the Viking of olden days. The noble Warrior is known for his stamina, courage, and superb character. These qualities enabled him to dominate the Norwegian Seas. The Maiden with her queenly statue was greatly praised by the Vikings or Nordic people. She was the perfect example of honor, purity, and beauty. It is with great pleasure that the Valhalla presents the 1981 Warrior and Maiden. 1982 Warrior and Maiden George Harris and Rhonda Deas 19 Seniors This year, the Senior Class of Huffman High School has lived up to the tradition of greatness that has been set by seniors in the past. The Seniors of 82 have shown immense school spirit in support of all school activities. They have made many contributions to Huffman through their leadership abilities and academic excellence. Not only have they been successful academically, they have shown outstanding spirit at pep rallies and have enthusiastically participated in numerous other extracurricular activities. These freshmen have proven themselves to be a super class and we're proud to have them here at Huffman High. 32 33 Sophomores The sophomores have grown this year with great enthusiasm. They have shown pride in the school through their involvmcnt in the school’s many activities, and their contributions to its progress. The sophomore class demonstrates super spirit and they’ve proven themselves to be a great asset to Huffman High School. 34 Juniors This year the members of the Junior class became more aware of their growing unity. Friendships grew stronger through the many activities and projects in which they took part. Most of the class members contributed, from working at pep rallies to raising money for the Junior-Senior prom. Every junior looks forward to the excitement of becoming next year’s seniors, while at the same time recalling the past. 36 37 Drama Huffman's drama department is known for its very talented actors and original productions. Hours of rehearsal and hard work go into each production to make it the finest and most enjoyable performance that it can possibly be. More than just the actors are involved, however; we can’t forget the contributions of the stage crew and those in charge of costumes and make-up. The talents of these young people will lead to great success in the future. Vocal Every year, Huffman High takes pride in its outstanding choral department. The Girls’ Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chansoniers, and Mixed Ensemble have a history of achieving high honors at every competition in which they perform. Under the direction of Allan Gillespie, these very talented musical groups continue to maintain superior quality and high standards. Can you make it across' 45 Homecoming ’81-’82 Decorating doors and buildings, a parade, the spirit trophy, a dance, and a fantastic pep rally are all elements involved in a Homecoming at Huffman High School. Each year, this special event causes more excitement and enthusiasm than any other. Everyone looks forward to the big game and the crowning of the homecoming queen. The senior class was awarded the trophy this year for consistently displaying outstanding spirit and good sportsmanship. November 21 was the night thirty-four girls had anxiously awaited, each hoping that this would be her chance to become the new Miss Valhalla. Each girl had been judged the preceding day in the preliminaries. These included interview, swimsuit, evening gown, and talent. Ed Blackwelder, Cheri Brown, Dr. David Dye, Mitzi Prater, and Sam Thompson compiled the panel of distinguished judges who had the very difficult job of choosing a winner. Huffman enjoyed having Phoebe Stone, Miss Alabama 1981, as the M istress of Ceremonies this year. Between acts she told of her many experiences at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City, and also entertained the audience with a delightful dance routine. After the top ten finalists performed their talents, the top five were chosen and finally, Sabra McLean was crowned Miss Valhalla. Huffman is fortunate to have the winner of this contest go directly to compete in the Miss Alabama Pageant. Good luck Sabra! M Raines, W Davenport Rifle Team Drill Team SPORTS Varsity Football Kicks Off a New Season Huffman Vikings displayed great effort in their attempts to go to state. Their record, 5-5, says much about their valiant effort. Hopes ran high before the Banks game; the state play-offs were in sight. Chances were good that if they could steal the Jets victory. Carver would be a stepping stone to the state playoffs. But all hopes sank with the Viking’s defeat. However, the Viks did place third in the Region. This year the team members vote on the most outstanding participants in the Varsity football program. This years outstanding player's were The Most Valuable Player — Bart Knight; Outstanding Offensive Back or End Bart Knight; Outstanding Offensive Lineman Danny Abts; Outstanding Defensive Back or LB Robert Ballentine; Outstanding Defensive Lineman or End Blake Sprayberry; and this year’s captains for the year are Bart Knight and Robert Ballentine. Blake Sprayberry was awarded with the Glenn Turner Scholarship Award. The coaches also voted on the Coaches’ 100% Award. This year’s award went to Alan Blankenship. They reached their success through many grueling hours of practice, which paid off in many ways. The final record for Huffman was 22-8. The Viks boasted a regional record of 10-0 which gave them the ninth region championship. Their expertise led them to the State play-offs where they were eliminated by Berry in the semi-finals. The team has reason to be proud of their .318 team batting average. Batters such as Bo Price with a .413 average and Bart Knight with .397 helped lead their team. The leading pitcher for Huffman, was Mark North who sported an 8-2 record, 93 strike-outs, and an amazing earned run average of 1.21. Coach Carraway. 103 Varsity Drives Through New Season Under New Coach If someone looked at the 1981-82 basketball season without getting the entire story, one would say the year had been a complete disaster. However, under first year coach Wayne Bracy, the Vikings played much better than their record indicated, with only two seniors on the squad, next year could be only better. Guards Jimmy Kyle and Vaughn Spencer, forward Greg Mims and 6'6 center John Clements return for action next year. Not too much could be expected with such a young team, but as for next year top teams in the city such as Hayes and Phillips could have their hands full. I he girls displaying a terrific pyramid. Varsity Cheerleaders Get Fired Up The cheerleaders for the 1981-82 school year were among the best in Huffman High School's history. From football games to pep rallies, the spirit displayed by these eighteen girls was tremendous. Winning first place in the large varsity competition at Jacksonville State University's cheerleading clinic this summer proved that they were also among the best high school squads in the state. Sponsor Lynn Riggins, Varsity head Sharon Thomason, and Junior Varsity head Rhonda Braswell led the talented girls. Hours of hard work proved profitable as the creative cheers and breath taking pyramids thrilled the student body, as well as parents and students from other schools. Also deserving attention were Mr. Big Orange, Brad Riddle, and Lady Viking, Kelly Thornton. Serving as Huffman High School's mascots, they added color and excitement to pep rallies and football games. This year, as in the past, our Valoreltes have performed dance routines with outstanding precision. They arc under the direction of Mrs. Juanita Champion and Mrs. Elizabeth McFarland. The head Valorette is Rhonda Deas and cohead is Dana Partridge. Acting as a faction of the band, the Valoretles received first place in All City Band Competition. In the Mid-Alabama Marching Festival at Midfield High School they received superior ratings with a score of 97 and received a trophy for the best overall drill team in class 4A. They ended this years series of competitions by receiving a superior rating and a perfect score of 100 at the Old South Marching Festival in Newnan, Georgia.
