These two outstanding seniors are chosen by the faculty and represent the ideal Huffman student. Their traits of leadership, character, and intelligence are comparable to those of the ancient Vikings. The warrior was known for his unfailing stamina, courage. and integrity with which he mastered the vast Norwegian seas. He was a noble and majestic figure. The maiden, with her queenly statue was a perfect representation of honor, purity, and beauty. This combination made her a dominant figure among the Nordic people. It is with great pleasure that the VALHALLA announces the 1980 Warrior and Maiden. 21 FRESHMEN A stage of our life has only just begun. It s different but it's great. The session rooms showed their spirit by decorating their doors, and all four classes exemplified that true Viking spirit. Although all the classes were sensational, the Seniors won the Homecoming Trophy. Our last game and pep rally were not only special because it was Homecoming, but also because the spirit of the school, including the faculty, was fantastic. Running for classes, waiting in line only to find out the class you wanted was full, and then having your schedule changed three weeks into the school year were all a part of 1979-80. The first pep rally was something special! Freshmen, shy and embarrassed, soon learned that we were all friends. By Homecoming, our school spirit really showed; we were proud of it and still remember that special week. Country Fair Day was some day! We were dead tired by 7th period but happy that the money which we spent would help our school’s clubs. Somewhere, between that first pep rally and Country Fair Day. were those dreadful exams. Our cramming the day before was quite obvious on the report cards. But it had been done before, and it will be done over and over again. New friends were made, new goals were achieved, and most students even learned new things along the way. Freshmen, Sophomores. Juniors. Seniors, Faculty, and Administration were all a vital part of 1979-80. 49 Seniors All our lives we wanted to he Seniors. We've made it. We've gone through four great years and we have much more to look forward to. It's sad to leave the excitement of high school, but we’re happy to go on to the mysteries of the future. Girls’ and Mixed Ensemble — talented groups of students working in perfect harmony to share their music with others. The Chansoniers sang the Alma Mater at the Homecoming Pep Rally, the Mixed Ensemble brought joy to the Fair Haven Retirement Home with their Christmas songs, and the Concert Choir with the Girls’ Ensemble joined the other groups to perform an inspiring Christmas Concert at a Community Church. The tremendous increase in the Choral Department enrollment this year illustrates a growing interest in the musical activities of Huffman High School. We've enjoyed the musical “Charlie Brown,” the Christmas Banquet, and the new Choral Club. We’ve attempted to raise money for this growing department several times. If anyone has an urge to buy old popcorn, old candy, out-of-date cookbooks, or two year old Christmas candles, you may find it in Mr. Gillespie’s office. Thanks to all of the students who have participated and contributed to the Choral Department’s growth, making it a department which is increasing in quality as well as quantity. C. Haruog. T. Thomas. I he permanent team captains for this year were Butch Walker and Jim Ivey. Seasonal awards were presented to the following players: Jim Ivey — Outstanding Offensive Lineman: Butch Walker Out-standing Defensive Lineman: Bobby Christian Outstanding Offensive Back: and Cortney Johnson Outstanding Defensive Back. Butch Walker also received the coaches I (XT.' Award and the Bobby Duke M.V.P. Award. Robbie Marlowe received the Glenn Turner Scholarship. Award. Steve Jones was chosen for First team on the All City learn and Jim Ivey and Bobby Christian were chosen for the Second team. Jim Ivey was also chosen for All State. I wo new school records were set this year. David Garrison had seven interceptions and Cortney Johnson had seventy-seven tackles. It seems that not only the team had a winning season, but many individual players had one too. The players and coaches both deserve a hardy congratulations for a job well done. Way to go V'lks! BASKET- BALL The Basketball team returned this year with a lot of inexperience and raw talent and very little lime to gel it together. The season began with about the same number of wins and losses, but toward the end the dribbling Viks got their act together and ended the season with a fairly good record. 103 1979-80 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Debbie McQueen 104 Susie M a ness Brenda Manning Felica Parks Cynthia I .imat Julie Metcalf Judy Uerren Susan Gilbert t05 Diane Pern Carol Thomason 1979-80 B-TEAM CHEERLEADERS Kim Watt Sharon Thomason Patti Hawkins Barbara Waller Gail Nash Sabra Mcl-ean BASEBALL The Huffman Baseball Team competed in its eleventh season this past year. Senior players can look back on great seasons past and younger players can look forward to even better seasons in the near future. TRACK The Viking Track Team, for the eighth consecutive year, has maintained its outstanding record by winning the City Championship Track Meet. William Cialamorc has coached the team for five of those eight years. This year Grant York placed first as an individual runner. Other members that placed include Mike Duke — third. Mr. G.. you had another great year. With Concert Choir. Chansoniers. Girls’ Ensemble, and Mixed Ensemble, how could it be anything but great. We enjoyed the concerts and appreciated all the hard work involved. The blend of the voices made the music a language we could all understand and love. 183 Our last game this year was special because it was Homecoming. Wc really let the Huffman Vikings know how much we loved them at the pep rally. There were snoopy signs, ziggy signs, muppet signs, and more. This year's freshmen, however, began with the impressive spirit which usually takes a year to develop. Winning the spirit stick is an accomplishment of which they can be proud, and hopefully the spirit of the Class of '83 will continue to flourish. 99 With two years of Science now being required of all students, most freshmen find themselves spending some time in one of the classrooms in the bottom of “A.” Whether in Biology or General Science. those indescribable lab experiences make it an unforgettable part of the freshmen year. They sometimes possess a great fear of doing something wrong and heanng that monotonous shout of F-R-E-S-H-M-A-N!” Many upperclassmen pick on the freshmen, so they always have to be on their guard. After a few months this fear subsides, and the freshmen feel at home. Soon after arriving at Huffman, the freshmen discovered that one of the most popular excuses for getting out of class is the need to use the telephone. The privilege is often abused, but the availability of the phones is an asset to the school and a convenience for the students. We, the editors, hope that this year’s 1980 Valhalla will help recapture the memories of our high school years. These events range from freshmen orientation to senior class graduation. There will always be a Senior class, but what makes each class special is that true friendships have been made. Within the rounds of friendship, the ball will continue to roll toward the future. Mark, Vicki, and Carol
