Huffman High School Birmingham, Alabama Volume I 1968 2 LEGEND OF VALHALLA Among the silver and golden mythical palaces which the Norse Vikings believed awaited them in Eternity, one was most beautiful, most coveted. It was in this palace that their supreme God and protector. Odin, reigned. The Vikings were an adventurous and courageous trfbe, sworn always to fight with the forces of good and against the force of evil. They believed that the supreme triumph -- and. indeed, the only honorable death -- was to die in battle amid the brave ... to die in battle against evil ... to die in valor. For those who had fought — and died -- for him. Odin prepared a great feast in his palace in the sky. where the slain heroes could reign with him throughout eternity. If a soldier were to be slain at night, a maiden would descend upon a white horse to carry the hero to the palace of Odin along the path of the Milky Way. If the brave one died in the light of day, the heavens cried, and the rains fell, and the maiden descended along the rainbow’s arch of colors. Each Viking warrior held a hope in his heart that someday he might be chosen to reign with Odin: for whether he died in the ebony of night, or the blue of the morning’s dawn, there awaited a path --a path leading to the most beautiful, treasured resting place in the heavens, a path leading to the golden halls of Valhalla ... By Charlotte Wells FACULTY 10 4 ACTIVITIES 62 5 All annuals are alike. They may differ on the surface, but underneath their purpose is the same as the Valhalla’s will always be - a reflection of a school year. And during a school year a lot of things do happen, things that need recording; for some of them have never occurred before in the years that fade behind, and may never occur again in the years that wait ahead. And even those events that are repetitions of old ones have a new touch. Again it is the year that counts - only in this year can these circumstances occur for you; they cannot come again. All impressions of the happenings of the 1967-68 year had to be massed together, sorted, reduced to words and pictures. That was our job. It’s done now. But your job is not. A yearbook is for the future as well as the present. You must read it now, and read it long from now. when these reflections will turn to retrospections, memories. Your job is just beginning ... 6 The year 1966-1967 was a special year that will hold lasting memories for all of us. It was in this year that our school was born. A thriving collard patch was chosen as the site for Huffman High. In September, 1966, the first students of Huffman High started attending classes in the stadium at Wood lawn High School. We were the first. We were both freshmen and seniors; it made us feel important. On March 20. 1967, the doors of the new high school opened to the students. Our round school was found to be both beautiful and practical. Everything about our school was new: new books, new desks, unique locker alcoves, new equipment in the labs, overhead projectors, swinging chalkboards, and much more. We examined the new classrooms and dome-shaped gymnasium with pride: Deep in cherished Southern lands. Here our noble Huffman stands. Lead her. guide her. Lord, we pray Give her courage day by day. Through the worst that may befall her. Let her youth stand straight and free. Onward marching, ever seeking Honor, truth, and purity! 7 I 9 Faculty 12 The supervision of Huffman High School lies under the fine leadership of Mr. James R. Tarrant. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, he has shown his ability as the head coach at Phillips and Banks High Schools. Also he served as principal at Christian Elementary, Gibson Elementary, Huffman Elementary, and Woodlawn High Schools. Mr. Tarrant has the desire and ability to be a personal friend and counselor of each individual student and teacher.
