They won the Region 6 champion-hip for the fifth year in a row and also broke the school record for w in by posting a fine 28 win-9 Ion. season. Once in the state play-off the Golden Gopher came close to going all the way to the crown. The Gopher defeated Weal End in their first round game then beat a good Robert E. Lee team to advance to the semi-final . The Gopher then had to travel to Mobile to take on the defending State champion Davidson High School. Hueytown and Davidson battled neck and neck before Davidson finally pulled out the three game series two game to one. Hueytown had been beaten but still had very much to be proud of because the twenty-eight victories was the most any team posted in 1980. The Hueytown squad wa led by many but the three main standouts were ll-Counly selections Tony Colvrrt, Johnny Barnes, and Stacey Ellis. Colverl led the entire county with a .55 1 batting average. He also led the team in double , run scored and stolen ba e . Following closely behind wa Johnny Barne . Barm - led the county with nine homcrun and forty-one RBI's. Both of these- marks along with Colverl’ batting average were also new school records. Stacey Ellis led the way in the pitching department a he posted twelve win against only four losses. Other starter who contributed greatly to the Gophers' fine season were Randy Ragland. Philip Wood. David Taylor. Scott Hereford. Andy Skate , and Roger W esson. The outlook for the 1981 season look dim with Roger Wesson being the only starter returning. But Coach Tibbs ha some good reserves plus a good B-Team that he hope will work hard to keep up the tradition at Huey town High School. 116 117 Wrestling Team Fir i Row: D. Surnr., T. Hudoon, J.
