Turkey is a Middle Eastern countn that lies mainl in st)uth Nestem Asia, with a small area extending into M uthea.slem Europe. The capital is Ankara. Turkey is bordered n the north by the Black Sea, to the east by Georgia Armenia and Iran, to the south by Iraq, Syria, and the Mediterranean Sea, and to the west by the Aegean Sea, Greece, and Bulgaria. The Asian part otTurkes. Khich is called Anatolia, is sep;u-ated from the European part. Thrace, by the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles Strait. Turkey is among the larger countries of the Middle East, in temis olterritop. and population, and its land area is greater than that of any European stale. Nearl all of the counu is in Asia, compnsing the oblong peninsula of Asia Minor, known alst) as Anatolia. The remainder — Turkish Thrace — lies in the extreme southeastern part of Europe, a liny remnant of an empire that once extended over much of the Balkans. Another invasion by the Eydians in ?M B.C. led to the partition of the Roman Empire of Alexander the Great. According to the historian Herodotus, the Carians settled in what is now the prin ince of Mugla after coming from Crete. The city became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1425. and the castle was built in 1.521 AD for use in a planned assault on Rhodes. The Ottoman Sultan at the tiine.
