f f f COMMAND MASTER , - - 3iy ,n QMCMQSWD John A. Davis A native of Henderson, North Carolina, Master Chief Davis enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1964 at Columbia, South Carolina. After graduation from Basic Training in San Diego he reported on board USS THOMASTON CLSD-285 as at Deck Seaman. For two years he worked the J wing-walls during numerous Amphibious landings and was the bowman on the LCVP that landed the first Marine in Viet 7 Nam. V N g In 1966 he became a Quartermaster and also stood duties as a Signalman. He was the boat Signalman in wave four of J p the Chu Lai landing. In 1968 he reported l to the USS ALGOL QAKA-545 homeported , y r 1 6 t , J , it I V , in Little Creek, Va. as Assistant Navigator. Upon completion of a six month Caribbean cruise he transferred to tNavalcAir Station Imperial Beach, Ca. as Base Master-at-Arms. In 1970 he was re-assigned to Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Fl. Master-at-Arms force. - r , t V 4 7 ' s February 1971 he reported on board USS DURHAM KLA-1145 in Long Beach, Ca. where he qualified as JOOD underway, and participated in the withdrawal of Marines from Viet Nam. USS DURHAM picked up over 3,000refugees off theccoast of South Viet Nam for transportation to the Philippines. He was later assigned to the University of Florida as a navigation instructor, and established the first sailing program at an NROTC unit. t g l J ' y August 1979 he reported to the USS MOUNT BAKER QAE-343 at Charleston, Sc. Some of his duties were, Assistant Navigator, Navigator, 3M Coordinator, Senior enlisted watch coordinator, qualified OOD underway and obtained his ESWS pin. January 1983 he reported to Southern University and LSU combined N ROTC Unit as Junior Class Advisor. On 5 March 1986 he checked on board USS DOYLE QFFGO-395 in Mayport, Fl. as Assistant Navigator and Division Officer. Master Chief Davis' duties included condition three OOD in the Persian Gulf while performing escort duties. He reported to Service School Command, Orlando, Fl. as Assistant Director of Quartermaster!Signalman A School. On 7 January 1992 he reported to the USS ELMER MONTGOMERY CFF-10825 in Mayport, Fl. as Command Master Chief. The following year he assumed the duties as Command Master Chief of the USS HUE CITY QCG-665 and took her on her maiden deployment to the Mediterranean. Master Chief Davis lives in Jacksonville, Fl. with his wife Cheryl and seven children, Donna, Barbara, John, Kimberly, Carri, Terri, and Robert. 6
