In Memoriam TIMOTHY NOEL SCHUMACHER Son of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Schumacher Known to many members of the Class of 1970 from their grade school days Born August 22, 1952 Died July 23, 1960 To close the eye and close the ear, Wrapped in a trance of bliss, And, gently drawn in loving arms, To swoon from that to this:-- Scarce knowing if we wake or sleep, Scarce asking where we are, To feel all will sink away. All sorrow and all care! Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe 4 Mr. Ogland Superintendent Congratulations to each of you. To you Seniors, graduation marks the end of your high school life . At the same time it is the beginning of a new and much more important era for you. In this inter-planetary age the world needs mature, thoughtful people more than at any previous time in history. This is an age of new horizons in nearly every phase of human endeavor. The manner in which you are able to adjust to these new situations and conditions and your ability to take advantage of those opportunities will determine the extent to which you become a productive member of society. Each of you has the potential of coping successfully with these eventualities and becoming mature adults--adults who will be useful happy citizens of our country. Best Wishes and Good Luck. A. B. Ogland 5 Mr. Heiting Principal As this school year ends, it will bring to a close the secondary education for the senior class. It has been a challeng- ing year in several ways. Technologi- cally it is gratifying and mystifying how easy it is for man to journey through space to reach the moon and soon to other planets in the solar system. Com- puters are now performing tasks, with- out error, that man could never do. Sociologically man is slowly learning how to respect the rights of others and treat them as equals. In spite of all the progress that has been made (if one may call it progress), there are many problems that exist that must be solved by a future genera- tion, if man is to live in the interest of humanity. There are problems of rac- ism, pollution, war, poverty, educa- tion, and government. These are problems that will challenge you and the rest of the world as you enter the stage of adulthood. We trust you will meet these challenges even bet- ter than the past generations. To find your place in the world and live in it with satisfaction and enjoyment is our simplest wish. W. G . Heiting ASSISTANT TO THE PRINCIPAL Mr. Cassutt 6 Mr. Youngberg Guidance Counselor My most sincere congratulations to the graduating Seniors of the class of 1970. You have met the challenges of high school education, and now you will have the opportunity to apply your results. You will go out into an ever-changing but always demanding adult world which puts a premium on this application. As educators, it is our hope that you have been well prepared in all respects, to assume your new role. All too often the fun- damental objectives of the high school education become clear after you have passed through the system and maturity brings on an appreciation for things as they are and not as we would have them. We are proud of you Seniors as you are, and we assume that you will become many of the things that we wish you could be. 7 Darrell Youngberg Board of Education The chief administrative body of the Hudson school system, the Board of Education, plans budgets, establishes school policies, and hires faculty members . And Other Places. 36 Boys' State was a tremendous experience, and one I will long remember. During that week I learned of the organization and work that goes into our government. My lasting impressions of Boys' State are not of the governments we set up, the mock elections, nor even of speakers such as Governor Knowles. Rather, I'll remember the great bunch of guys who were there, the friends I made, and the dedication of our counselors. I hope everyone has an opportunity to experience the spirit and enthusiasm of an event such as Boys' State. DAVID RICHIE Badger State 1969 Madison DEBORAH STAHNKE On Saturday, June 14, 500 girls converged on Madi- son and took over Sellery dorm. The first step was meeting all the girls in my city, followed by a whirl - wind of campaigning for city, county, and state offices. The two political parties. Federalists and Nationalists, met separately to decide on their party platforms and candidates for state offices. At an impressive inauguration Wednesday night, I was sworn in as Assemblyman from the 19th district. Saturday morning we marched to the capitol for our legislative session--the highlight of the week. While the Assemblymen and Senators met in their chambers, the rest of the girls looked on. At the close of the session we were free to go home. The girls at B.G.S. are the friendliest I have ever known. Everyone was drawn together by a common interest--learning how to become better, more in- volved citizens. Meeting them and participating in all the activities at Badger State added up to a tremen- dous week. Pete I verson 5’ 8 Pete's progress over three years of high school basketball was outstanding. His steady play could be counted on in all situations. Jeff Nelson 5' 7 Jeff, the captain of the Raider five, was also the leading scorer. Hudson's only all-conference performer developed into the team leader and was regarded as the top driver in the conference. Greg Olson Jr 5' 11” Greg's play as a senior was a prime reason for the strong Raider finish. He H was one of the best shooters on the ; squad and came through with many im- : portant baskets in regular games. V3 _f Curt Sahnow 5' 10 Curt's determination was a factor that helped the squad many times. He was a good defensive player who contributed much to the Raider cause. AI Brendum 6’ 2 Al's offensive ability was among the finest in the MB Conference. The sec- ond leading rebounder on the squad, A1 and his easy-going attitude kept the squad relaxed. Andy Severson 5' 7 With Andy and Jeff, Hudson had the smallest but finest pair of guards in the MB Conference. Andy's outside shoot- ing and ball-hawking tactics contributed greatly to the Raider success. Tom Stanek 6' 0 Tom's unique style of playing basket- ball will long be remembered. His leaping ability made him the top re- bounder on the squad. His cat-like” movements made him the most exciting individual, also. Convention at Green Lake, Wisconsin, for three years. He will be receiving the outstanding F.F.A. Senior Award as well as the F.F.A. scholarship. Both boys work and live well with other people, are determined to live wholesome and worthwile lives, and appreciate the fact that all work no matter how humble is as important for the welfare of the commu- nity as the position of higher rank. The faculty is pleased to present the awards to these deserving stu- dents . A.F.S. Representatives ELIZABETH TODD Through my summer experiences in Finland I had a chance to meet teens from all over Finland in Alajarvi at the summer school where I stayed for a month. After arriving in Hel- sinki, I finally met my family, the Pasternacks, and my new sisters, Maggi and Iris. Going to the market early in the morning or roasting sausages with friends 'til late at night, I got to know and understand the Finns and their way of life. I would like to thank all the people of Hudson who made it possible for me to have such a fantastic experience in understanding people of other countries. Through our A.F.S. program I found our wonderful world a little bit smaller. MARGUERITE SCHLUTER I live in Brisbane, Austra- lia. Brisbane has a popula- tion of 800,000 people. On August 8 I arrived in Hudson to spend a year with my American family, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Starr, and sisters, Twink, Spark, and Barb. This was a pleasant change for me, because at home I have only one brother. Having winter when it's summer at home and then snow on top of that has really been a big change for me, but I loved it. I have enjoyed living as an American teenager, which is really very similar to life at home, and also the generous, kind, and friendly people I've come to know so well. Words will never be able to ex- press my thanks to the people of Hudson and A.F.S. for the most won - (derful year of my life. Marguerite Schluter 17 Preston Road, Manly, Queensland 4179 Australia SUSANNE NELSON Last summer in Bangalore, India, I saw a lot of things I never thought I'd see; I did a lot of things I never thought I'd do and I learned more about people and myself that I ever could have at home. I’d like to thank the commun- ity for giving me such a fantastic experience. A.F.S. offers a student so much that can’t be found in another program. There's a bond that holds A.F.S. 'ers together when they return home. I wish to thank Hudson again for giving me the opportunity to become an A.F.S.'er. Hudson Senior High School May, 1970 To the now and future YOU, Every year brings its ups and downs, its joys and sorrows. This school year has been full of events worth remembering, and some we would rather forget. As we put this book together, we constantly re- minded ourselves that this annual is for you, and that our job was to publish a book that would capture and preserve many of the memories you'll search to recall many years from now. We realize it's impos- sible to impress upon you the significance and value this book may hold for the future YOU, so we leave you with the following thought from Proverbs 3:13-18 concerning your annual's theme: Happiness. Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gets understanding, for the gain from it is better than gain from silver and its profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called happy. Thank-you and our best wishes for your happiness today and every tomorrow. m True happiness is to no spot confined. If you preserve a firm and constant mind, 'TisT gre, 'tis everywhere.
