Mr. Ogland We are living in a fast moving world. When our veteran space- men were in high school, there was no such thing as an astro- naut . Many of you may fill some occupational post in future years that is as yet unknown to us. In the brief span of a formal school education, an individual cannot possibly be taught all the facts and knowledge he will need to meet tomorrow's problems. He can, however, develop inter- est in discovering information for himself, in critically evalu- ating such knowledge, and ac- quire skill in doing so. We trust that your school experi- ence has been a launching pad which has given you a start for a lifetime of learning. Congratulations and best wishes to all of you . A . B. Ogland 5 Greetings and congratulations upon the completion of a very successful senior year. This class has produced many leaders and the leadership has been shown in scholastic work as well as in offices held in various or- ganizations and student govern- ment . The world around us is progress- ing and changing very rapidly. You must accept your share of responsibility in the area of hu- man rights if we are to under- stand and evaluate these changes and how they affect the dignity of man. We believe you will take your place in this generation to help solve many of the ills of the world. May you be ever so successful in whatever you pursue. W. G . Heiting Mr. Heiting 6 Mr. Youngberg Another year has passed and our graduates of 1969 join the ranks of those of us who now look back on our high school days. Let's hope that this group can be proud of its record of achievements up to now. But looking back is not the task at hand. We are rather becoming ever increasingly aware of the fact that high school graduation is not the end of an era but rather the beginning of an adult life and the world of re- sponsibility, responsibility to ourselves and to the world we live in. It is the sincere wish of those of us in education that we have done an adequate job in preparing this class to meet both of these obligations. It has been a genuine pleasure working with each of the students from the class of 1969. May I extend my best wishes for your future. Darrell Youngberg 7 Board of Education Planning budgets, establishing school policies, and hiring faculty members are some of the many duties of the Board of Education. On behalf of the student body, the True Blue Annual Staff wishes to ex- press its appreciation to the Board for its faithful service and loyalty. David Kelly, president James Ostby, clerk Dr. P. A. This sloan appeared on posters and could be heard throughout the halls of Hudson High during the week preceding the big game with Glenwood City Hill- toppers on October 18. The week became quite hectic with the planning and preparation for the many new and old events that took place on Friday. The true spirit of Homecoming was re- leased at two o'clock on Friday when the pep assembly began with its cheers for the players, the coach, the skits, and the five lovely queen candidates who presented their pep speeches to the stu- dent body. After winning first in the skit and float, the Seniors walked away with the annual Homecoming trophy. Despite the damp, drizzling weather, the parade still went on as scheduled honoring the football coaches. At this time the queen candidates, Susan Cor- coran, Rae Ann Miller, Kris Mueller, Mary (Kitty) Richie, and Debbie Shaffer were presented to the public. Everyone was proud to say in spite of the rain this year's parade was one of the most suc- cessful Homecoming parades. The rain continued but so did the spirit, for many fans showed up at the field to see the mighty Raiders finally Tip the Tops to the tune of 19--6. At ten o'clock students arrived at the Oak Street Auditorium for the coronation dance. The music was provided by The Group. At 10:45 the highlight of Home- coming took place when the 1967 Home- coming Queen, Markell Lanpher, crowned lovely Kris Mueller to be the 1968 Home- coming Queen. 20 • U «SO f ( 72 • 88 1 73 50 30 J6 81 li • ti •£ -4S i ' 71' S3 80'2? 51 ' 74 THIRD ROW: Mr. Hansen, coach, Leslie Steffen, Michael Matson, Dale Ebben, Thomas O'Connell, Thomas Hopkins, Michael Stevens, David Bertelsen, Robert Bohne, William Wagner, Gary Vindal, Mr. House, coach. Future Teachers of America Learning about different teaching fields and the requirements of each as well as developing character and leadership in each member are the main objectives of the Future Teachers of America under the direction of Mr. Ogland. F. T. A. members learn more about the teaching profession through the use of movies, quizzes, and speakers. Senior members also add to discus- sions by telling of their experiences in practice teaching. Every year the F. T. A. awards a scholarship to a senior going into the teaching profession. This money is earned by selling popcorn at the home basketball games. Officers for this year are president, Gail Johnson; vice-president, Carol Michaelson; secretary, Sue Nelson; treasurer, Pat Halvorson; librarian, Debora Barron. 36 THIRD ROW: Steve Rivard, Thomas Mabie, Brett Huston, Clifford Larson, Gary Affolter, Steve Parson, Robert Duden, Dennis Kinney, Steven LaVenture. Future Farmers of America The Future Farmers of America is the national organization for students studying vocational ag- riculture in public secondary schools. It is an intra-curricular activity having its origin and roots in a definite part of the school curriculum. The founda- tion upon which it is built in- cludes leadership, character de- velopment, sportsmanship, co- operation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agricul- ture, organized recreation, citi- zenship, and patriotism. The Hudson F.F.A. Chapter tries to follow the foundations that have been established in the national organization. It does this by holding monthly meetings which include recreation, award- ing scholarships, promoting safety, giving many deserved awards, holding Parent-Son Ban- quets, attending State and Na- tional F.F.A. Conventions, sell- ing worthwhile merchandise in the community, having an ex- perimental grain and corn plot, and a school forest. Attending the State F.F.A. Convention at Green Lake, Wisconsin, last June were Bob Knefelkamp and Charles Anderson, who was also chosen to attend the National F.F.A. Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Each year a boy from the Hudson Chapter is chosen for this honor. Bob Waxon played clarinet in the State F.F.A. band and later at the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwau- kee . Gordon Finkelson was awarded the State Farmer De- gree at this convention. Charles Anderson, Robert Knefel- kamp, Robert Waxon. SECOND ROW: J. Waldroff, sentinel; R. Waxon, secretary; B. Choosing pictures and arranging them on the pages, writing appropriate captions for pictures, proofreading copy were among the tasks that Lindsey Stout and Barbara Yoerg did under the direction of Mrs. Gilbertson dur- ing the makeup of the 1969 annual. Assisting them were Susan Dahm and Catherine Slight, junior editors. Subscriptions were taken by Sheryl Fairbanks and Bruce Utterback, senior business managers, along with Cynthia Simpson and Deborah Stahnke, junior busi- ness managers. Hurry up and think of a headline for this article. For the past year, comments like these came from the True Blue Times room as the staff rushed to get the paper out by Friday morning. The staff worked hard to improve the pa- per . Challenging articles were assigned to eager reporters. Features covered such topics as modular scheduling and student trips. Timely editorials dealing with school and national problems. Sports com- pleted the paper with its fine reporting. Work was coordinated by Mr. Gustafson, adviser, and Catherine Heywood and Sheryl St. Ores, managing editors. The front, editorial, and literary pages, took on a new look with their printed mast- heads . Papers were submitted to the National Scholastic Press Association for judging. The staff also entered the All-Wisconsin contest. A new bookshop furnished the funds to send six editors to a newspaper convention in Madison on October 19, 1968. 39 Co-Editors Catherine Heywood, Sheryl St. Ores FOURTH ROW: Roger Gratiot, Jerry Nelson, Stephen O'Brien, David Soucy, Eric Nilsen, William Pelke. Come, they told me, pa rum-pa-pum-pum ... Christmas Concert 1968 Pop Concert 1968 From the interior of a castle, the au- dience was transported to warm Hawaii in the 1968 pop concert with Jim Hutton, master of ceremonies. In keeping with the theme, the chorus sang such num- bers as PELE and THE HAWAIIAN WEDDING SONG. There were also ex- cerpts from the musicals OKLAHOMA, MY FAIR LADY and THE SOUND OF MUSIC sung by members of the chorus and accompanied by the band. THE BLUE AND THE GRAY along with the novelty number HEY PEDRO were played by the band along with other se - lections. Henry Charles Smith, solo trom- bonist of the Philadelphia Orches- tra from 1955 until 1967, was guest conductor at the Band Clinic held February 2, 1969. Mr. Smith has recorded as a member and soloist with the Philadelphia Or- chestra for Columbia Records. He was founder and trombonist with the Philadelphia Brass En- semble, a quintet which has made four recent recordings for Colum- bia. A recent release of the Coro- net Recording Company is entitled Henry Charles Smith Plays the Trombone . Mr. Smith has been on the facul - ties of the Curtis Institute of Mu- sic, Temple University, St. Olaf College, Luther College, and is presently Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University. He is on the editorial staff of G. Schi- mer music publishers and has several published books and com- positions with Schimer and Theo- dore Presser. He has been active as guest conductor, clinician, speaker, soloist, and recitalist. Smith Concert 1969 The Advisory Tea Meanwhile, back in the kitchen The honored guests at the advisory tea were Mrs. Albert Karras and the Board of Education. Is it the real stuff? Back again? Taste good, Becky? The three stooges. Stevens for the defense. The Senior Class Play D. A. Flint questions Nancy Lee Faulkner. ”1 killed him! I killed Bjorn Faulkner! I helped THAT MAN kill Him! Sigurd Jungquist ( William Zezza) screamed from the audience in the audience - How old should I make him? cent. His witnesses included Swedish housekeeper, Magda Svenson, (Sheryl Fairbanks); Faulkner's bookkeeper, Si- gurd Jungquist (William Zezza); Roberta participating play, NIGHT OF JANUARY 16th which was presented November 8 and 9. Van Rensselaer, a nightclub dancer, (Elsbeth Zweifel); his client, Karen An- dre; and the gangster, Larry Regan. District Attorney Flint (Robert Sokolow- ski) presented evidence to try to prove that Karen Andre (Jean Guggemos) mur- dered Bjorn Faulkner, the business ty- coon. His witnesses included the county medical examiner, Dr. Kirkland (Stan- ley Schloemer); the night watchman's wife, Mrs. Hutchins (Ann Kinney); Pri- vate detective, Homer Van Fleet (Lee Newman); officer, Elmer Sweeney (Curt Olson); and handwriting expert, Jane Chandler (Gail Johnson). The surprise appearance of Nancy Lee Faulkner (Karen Evenson and Deborah Shaffer), her father, John Graham Whitfield (Bruce Utterback) and the gangster, Larry Re- gan (Darryle Lundberg) were highlights of the first act. In the final act, each attorney tried to convince the jury (which consisted of members from the audience) that Karen Andre was guilty or not guilty of murder- ing her former employer, Bjorn Faulk- ner. Although the jury could decide either way, Miss Andre was found not guilty. Other members of the cast who helped make the play a success were Sue La- Valley, the prison matron; Jim Ahrens, the bailiff; Mark Miller, Judge Heath; Sally Swanson, Flint's secretary; Mary (Kitty) Richie, Stevens’ secretary; Gary Schettle, clerk of court; stenographer, Nancy Erickson; policemen, Richard Peterson and Dennis Kinney; and court attendant, Jay Faber. Defense Attorney Stevens (Ronald Zie- mann) tried to prove that Karen Andre, Faulkner’s former secretary, was inno- The play was directed by Richard Gus- tafson and student directors, Gayle Grunke and Deborah Bradham. Candid’s Catch! Awe, isn't he cute? Oops! Butch made a boo- boo. Have you had your Clackers today? The blahs. It's a bird-- it's a plane-- it's Raiderman! Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe-- the muggers! Where to begin . . . ? CLASSES Upon entering high school in the fall of 1966, we had two main problems: collecting leaves for our biology notebooks, and get- ting dates lined up for an early Homecom- ing--September 30. After much hard work (and expense) we came through with a first -prize float. Our Advisory Tea in Novem- ber, given in honor of the clergy, proved a great success due to our excellent plan- ning. March 30 and April 1 were exciting days for those who participated in the mu- sical, SOUND OF MUSIC. We got off to a good start under the leadership of Ronald Ziemann, Sally Swanson, Thomas Besser, and Bruce Utterback, along with the help of our advisers, Miss Noreen, Mr. Gustaf- son, and Mr. Hansen. Our junior year started off on the right foot. Our Homecoming float and skit, based on the theme, ’’Raiders on Safari”, without a doubt merited first place. In Days of Olde was the theme of our Junior-Senior Prom which took place May 3, 1968. Due to our great planning and enthusiasm it was the most unique prom ever presented in the history of our school; it will long be re- membered for its originality and beauty . Our junior year would never have been complete without our English themes, hard chemistry problems, Mr. Hutchison's jokes, and the capable leadership of Bruce Utterback, Sheryl St. Ores, Gail Johnson, Catherine Heywood, and Ronald Ziemann. During our last year at HHS we finally re- alized that spelling is important. Home- coming was especially exciting for us this year as we walked away with the trophy and crowned Kristen Mueller Homecoming Queen of 1968. Strange as it may seem The Night of January 16th” dramatically appeared on November 10 and 11. Under the direction of Mr . Gustafson it was a smashing success . SOUTH PACIFIC gave many seniors a second chance to partici - pate in a popular musical. The election of four girls as our all-school officers was a first in the history of HHS. Mark Miller, Gail Johnson, Catherine Heywood, Rae Ann Miller, and Ronald Ziemann led our class to the end of our high school days under the guidance of Miss Noreen, Mr. Gustafson, and Mr. Hansen. May came all too soon, but as the saying goes: All good things must come to an end. 66 Seniors '69 Gary Affolter Affy F.F.A. 2,3,4; Office Help 2. Home economics prepares girls for life in the future. Concentration is important while driving. The library provides a good place to study. I wonder if Rembrandt started this way. 91 BERLIN This German is Greek to me. The computer (teletype shown) has be- come popular with math students. New equipment makes learning easier for many 'Deutsch' students. The compass is a common sight in geometry. Industrial arts keeps our boys busy. Twinkle, twinkle little torch ... 92 High school newcomers really take to sophomore biology. Chemistry is an elective course, but HHS has many BRAVE students. Ready . . . Aim . . . Eek! ! What is it ? Only the ULTRA-BRAVE seniors attempt physics! 93 Conversation is a daily course. Hot lunch keeps 'em husky. Jane already knows. Did you know that milk is the vitality drink? Eat it up! Eat it up! Girl talk. Chew! Chew! You tell him, Steve. Hey Tom, you're smirking. No primping in the classroom, please. It's boys ... ... versus girls in the race for knowledge. Juniors just love to jabber, right Gayle? Sock it to him, Pat. Smile, smile, little Starr. Pencil, pencil, in my hand, please DO something! R E P R E S E N T A T I V E S E N I O R Mark Miller To be able to live well with other people, to exhibit a certain degree of leadership and independence of others, to have a knowledge of right and wrong, to deter- mine to lead a wholesome life, to be broadminded enough to appreciate that all work no matter how humble is as impor- tant for the welfare of the community as the position of higher rank, to seek more knowledge with the guidance of parents, teachers, and superiors, to possess character of a quality in keeping with a student's age and training are the worth- while characteristics a high school grad- uate should possess in the opinion of the faculty. Because he possesses these qualities, Mark Miller has been selected Hudson High School's Representative Senior for 1969. Last June Mark represented Hud- son High School at Badger Boys' State. Football, track, student government were among his extra curricular activi- ties; and his classmates elected him class, advisory, and organization officer. Class play, Prom committee, and Arts and Crafts have been his other special interests. His good citizenship, his adaptability, friendliness, dependability, and scholarship made him the faculty's choice for 1969 Representative Senior. 100 Elsbeth Zweifel Good Will Ambassadors Hudson's 1968 Goodwill Ambassador was Sheryl St. Ores. She left Hudson on June 26 to begin her journey to Germany. Sheryl trav- eled from New York to the Netherlands by boat. From there she traveled to Osnabriick, Germany, her first home. She stayed with the Heinrich Unger family. She had two sisters and one brother. From there she traveled to Dortmund, Germany, where she stayed with the Helmuth Harting family in which there were two sisters and one brother. Sheryl really enjoyed meeting the German teens. They are very much American, she said, having such things as discotheques and short skirts. While in Germany, Sheryl's families took her on hikes and trips around Germany and sur- rounding countries. Of her trip Sheryl commented: My experi- ences in Germany are ones which I can never forget. I hope that some time in the fu- ture I can return and see my German families again. I hope the future AFS students will have as wonderful a time as I have had. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the people who participated and supported the AFS pro- gram and made my whole trip possible. During the past year, Hudson High's A.F.S. student has been Elsbeth Zweifel from Naefels, Switzerland. Naefels is a small village in the mountains of Northeastern Switzerland. On August 13 Elsbeth arrived at the Eau Claire bus depot, where she met her new family--Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cahoy, sisters Caroline and Mary. In June, Elsbeth will leave Hudson and join other AFS students returning home. Elsbeth has been very active in many school activities. She was a member of A.F.S., French, Library, Swim, G.A.A. and Pep clubs, was on the Student Council, and was in the class play. All of our snow this past winter didn't bother Elsbeth, because at home they have even more snow. Our climate is quite similar to Naefels also. When Elsbeth returns home, she is plannng to finish school, and go to the university, where she would like to study chemistry or math. During my stay in Hudson I have especially enjoyed the very nice, 'open-minded' people, Hudson's location, and the sense of commu- nity. Elsbeth would enjoy hearing from everybody. Her address is: Elsbeth Zweifel Villaegger 8752 Naefels, Switzerland Sheryl St. Ores Ripon, Wisconsin, was host to Badger Boys' Staters during the week of June 15-22, 1968. This was the twenty-seventh session of Badger Boys' State. The P.T.A. sponsored Mark Mil- ler as the 1968 Boys' State representative. While Mark was at Ripon, he participated in the running of mock city, county, and state departments. A typical day included lectures, meetings, and conventions. The purpose of Boys' State is to give its par- ticipants a better understanding of how our government works and the duties and problems of its elective officials. It also gave Mark a chance to meet and work with many outstand- ing students of Wisconsin and to participate in sports like swimming, softball, baseball, football, and track. In short, Mark said, It was tremendous! Just meeting over one thousand other boys from Wisconsin was fun, and it was really great. Having Warren Knowles and the state superintendent of schools and other public officials speak to us, and then fill these offices ourselves in our mock cities and run things the way we wanted according to the democratic process, surely made a lasting impression. Mark Miller Badger State Representatives Sally Swanson The twenty-fifth session of Badger Girls' State convened June 15 and ended on June 22, 1968, at Madison, Wisconsin. The Parent Teachers Association sponsored Sally Swanson as this year's Badger Girls' State representative. The University of Wisconsin in Madison was host to 500 girls from all parts of the state. The girls set up their own mythical state of Badger and through the Nationalist and Fed- eralist parties held city and county meetings, conventions, pepper sessions, and elections. The girls learned how city meetings are held and how officers are elected. Party conven- tions were held and party platforms were written. The Girls' State's own Congress held a session in the Capitol building. The purpose of Girls' State is to promote good citizenship and make the young people of today more aware of how our government works. My experiences at Girl's State are some of the best in my life. Now that it is over, I can really appreciate the wonderful opportunity I was given. Calendar 1968-1969 August 26-- Would you believe, only 245 days 'til summer vacation?
