EX LIBRIS How beautiful is youth! how bright it gleams With its illusions, aspirations, dreams! Longfellow Mr. Vanasse Dedication With appreciation for his guidance and service to stu- dents, his cheerful attitude toward all, and his years of faithful service to Hudson High, the True Blue annual staff proudly dedicates its 1968 yearbook to Theodore Vanasse. 4 Mr. Ogland Congratulations to all of you for the completion of another successful school year. Your educational achievements here in school have been high, and you should get much personal satisfaction from your many accomplishments. Continued progress of civilization relies heavily on youth and its abilities to cope with the many changes that are taking place and will be forthcoming. This will especially be true as you ap- proach the 21st. Century. Commence- ment to you Seniors is not an end. It is a starting point for each of you. Your continued intellectual appetite, growth and progress will be an asset not only to you but to all mankind. Your reward will be much happiness and satisfaction from the part which you will play. May all of you continue to use your individual talents for a successful and happy career in whatever endeavor you choose. A. B. OGLAND 5 Mr. Heiting Another school year has passed; and as we examine the year, we notice that many important happenings have oc- curred. We can observe tremendous changes in the area of technology, eco- nomics, and social life. Many of these changes frighten the older part of the present generation, but not the younger part. Young people are accepting the ills of the world as a challenge. They appear willing to experiment with change to make the world a better place to live. What part will our graduating seniors play in this change? Will they accept any change suggestion without analyzing the effects on future mankind; or will they take the time to study, an- alyze, and restudy each change to be sure how it will affect mankind? With a firm family background and a strong educational foundation each will succeed in making a wise choice. It is also well to remember that self-government, political freedom, and the rule of law are rare and precious accomplishments. These are made pos- sible by a shared conviction that reason should prevail, that compromises are necessary, and that we should have a decent respect for one another's opin- ions. Best wishes for a happy and fruitful future. 6 W. G. HEITING Mr. Youngberg Best wishes to the graduating class of 1968. This class can be proud of the many contributions it has made to make Hudson High School the fine school that it is. Many class members will go on in higher education while many will not choose to go on but as a group they will continue to add to our American way of life; and, as individuals all have the poten- tial to be successful in their own right. Graduation is not the end but rather the beginning for those who choose to have it as such. 7 Mr. Ogland, Mr. Kelly, Dr. Tweet, Mr. Fetzner, Dr. Bryce, Mr. Ostby. Board Of Education The Board of Education is the chief administrative body of the Hudson Community School Sys- tem. Among the duties of the five members are planning and adopt- ing a budget, establishing and regulating the policies of the school, and hiring faculty mem- bers. On behalf of the student body, the True Blue annual staff ex- presses its gratitude to the mem- bers. Our appreciation goes to David Kelly, president; James Ostby, clerk; Dr. P. A. Tweet, treasurer; John Fetzner and Dr. Hugh Bryce, directors, for their faithful service and loyalty. 8 School Help MRS. JENSCH Secretary to Mr. Ogland MRS. Many students through the years knew him as a teacher of biology and German and as an interested and active adviser of the Biology Club which he made into one of the most active and popular organizations in the school. He was always willing to help students and other teachers whenever he could. Mr. Wichmann's last act was that of helping another, which was typical of his life. This page is in memory of this fine teacher who contributed so much to Hudson High School. 14 YOUTH IN CLASSES Losing locker keys and understanding Julius Caesar were among the problems con- fronting us as sophomores. We soon adjusted ourselves; and after many hours spent on our first homecoming, we began to distinguish the class of 1968 by winning the Homecoming tro- phy. We gave the traditional advisory tea in honor of the civil defense, and the year was made successful with the guidance of Mr. Cas- sutt and Miss Carriar and the capable leader- ship of Andrew Turner, Gail Brown, James Olson, Jean Engstrom, and Stephen Chandler. Leading our Junior Class were Andrew Turner, William Engstrom, William Hopkins, James Bertelsen, and Jeanne Bourget, who were advised by Miss Carriar, Mr. Cassutt, and Mr. Weitkamp. The football season was highlighted by the juniors as we won the Home- coming trophy again. Another repeat was that the Little Brown Jug stayed in Hudson. We soon learned that the rumors of how difficult chemistry was, were not just rumors. Our written accounts of countries gave English III a foreign atmosphere. An early Christmas pres- ent was enjoyed when we received our class ring orders. Many of our class members were involved with the music department’s produc- tion of The Sound of Music. After many hours of hard, but fun work, we successfully carried out our prom theme, A Taste of Honey. Our senior year marked the end of our high school days, but memories lingered on. After having won the homecoming trophy for three consecutive years, we were awarded the trophy as a token of our achievement. Markell Lanpher was chosen as our Homecoming queen. MACBETH, tough physics problems, as well as political, social, and economic trends kept us busy with homework. On Nov- ember 10 and 11 we successfully presented our class play, Papa Was a Preacher. James Ol- son, Jean Engstrom, Mary McKenzie, Jeanne Bourget, and William Engstrom capably led our class under the guidance of Mrs. Qualls, Mr. Weitkamp, and Mr. Cassult. We were graduated May 29, 1968, leaving our friends behind as we approached our careers with anx- iety. 16 SENIOR CLASS 1968 DEBORAH ADAMS Debby Biology Club 2,3; G. A. A. 2, 3; Prom Committee 3. True Blue Annual Staff How do we crop these pictures? Can we type in the margins? If you're not busy, you can type because the deadline is next Friday. Such phrases became common language as co-editors Beth Burk- holder and Jean Engstrom, under the guidance of Mrs. Gilbertson, began the 1968 True Blue annual. Assisting them were Lindsey Stout and Barbara Yoerg, junior editors. Finances were handled by the senior business managers Jeanne Bourget and Cath- erine Cumming, who were assisted by Sheryl Fair- banks and Bruce Utterback, junior business manag- ers. After the photographer, Gene Brown, took die pictures, the construction of the publication began. True Blue Times Writing articles, typing proofreading, and meeting deadlines were just a few of the jobs that kept the 1968 True Blue Times staff busy during the year. With the help and guidance of the adviser, Mr. Gustafson, and co-editors, Mary McKenzie and Ken Michaelson, the staff learned a lot about the writing, make-up, and editing of a good newspaper. Many new and interesting features were includ- ed in the paper which was published every other week. The new features included a literary page, a conference sports column headed Quibble and Quote , the Teacher Feature , an exchange col- umn, and Dateline Asia . Throughout the year, each edition of the paper was sent to the National Scholastic Press Association to be rated. The editorial staff for the year included, co- editors, Mary McKenzie and Ken Michaelson; assis- tant editor, Sheryl St. Oes; editorial editor, Gail Brown; sports editor, Shelby Lein; make-up co-ed- itors, June Daniels and Lynda Anderson; feature editor, Cathy Heywood; and news editor, Jeanne Bourget. Future Teachers Of America What qualities of personality, char- acter, and leadership are essential in good teachers? What opportunities and responsibilities does the teaching pro- fession provide? These are some of the questions answered in this year's Fu- ture Teachers of America. During home basketball games, the F. T. A. raised money by selling pop- corn. This money will be awarded as a scholarship to a graduating senior who is going into the teaching profession. Senior members of the organization could practice teach in the grade school if they wished. By observing the respon- sibilities of a teacher, they gained many valuable experiences and a much clearer idea of what the teaching pro- fession is really like. Officers OFFICERS: Mary (Kay) Peterson, vice-president, Mary McKenzie, president, Cynthia Dahlman, librar- ian, Catherine Heywood, secretary, Gail Johnson, treasurer. 53 SECOND ROW: Adviser, Mr. Carlson, David Finkelson, Clifford Larson, Dennis Chilson, Steve Parson, Gary Affolter, Robert Knefelkamp, Charles Anderson, Robert Dahlman, Robert Duden, Ronald Grass, Gordon Finkle- son, Lonnie Best, Timothy Kinney, Michael Hartmon, Robert Hartmon. Future Farmers Of America Agriculture is more than farming. It, in fact, entails the processing, distribution and service of both raw and finished materials. This is proved by the Hudson Future Farmers of America. The boys deal with many areas of agriculture, such as safety, conservation, recreation, ex- perimentation, and farming. In order to help promote farm safety the boys sold slow moving vehicle warning signs . These are orange and red triangular shaped pos- ters which are to be placed on tractors, wagons, and any other vehicle travel- ing less than 25 m.p.h. These posters are a new safety slogan, and it is hoped they will save many lives annually. The highlight of the F . F . A. year is the Parent-Son Banquet held every spring in the high school cafeteria. At this affair the students are rewarded for their hard work. Jim Hartmon was chosen the Outstanding Senior for 1967. Mr. Heiting and Mr. Ogland were awarded the Honorary Chapter Degree for their aid to the organization over the years. Gordon Finkelson, along with four representatives of other F.F.A. chap- ters in St. Croix county, attended the 40th annual national F.F.A. convention during the second week in October, in Kansas City, Missouri. The highlight of this convention was the election of the four star farmers of America and the election of the national officers for the 1967-68 year. This year's national vice-president is William Boehm from Mosinee, Wiscon- sin. The responsibility of this office requires William as well as the other five officers to delay their education or work for one year at which time they will travel around the United States promoting the F.F.A. organization. David Brown and Gordon Finkelson were the Hudson delegates to the State Convention held in Green Lake, Wis- consin. The boys are chosen on a basis of their contributions, attitudes, and leadership within the organization, by a board consisting of Mr. Carlson, F.F.A. adviser, Mr. Heiting, and Mr. Ogland. AFS Club The AFS Club with its new adviser, Miss Weiss, launched a new school year with new ideas. The club led by President Barry Rogers and Secretary- Treasurer Jeanne Bourget did very well in providing a fun-packed week-end for visiting AFS students on January 5,6, and 7. The week-end got off to a great start as the Raiders won the game that night. A large number turned out for the social hour where they listened and thoroughly enjoyed the band, Soule Syndicate. On Saturday many ventured out in the brisk weather to the Junior High School for a morning swim. There was little time to be idle or rest because games such as volleyball con- tinued throughout the day. A talent show was given by the nine visiting students . It had much color, for the students entertained in their native costumes. There were three stu- dents from Thailand, one from Iceland, Afghanistan, Micronesia, Guatemala, New Zealand, and South Viet Nam. They were shown much hospitality by the Rogers, Grunkes, Michaelsons, Bourgets, Ahrens, Cahoys, Eng- stroms, Halvorsons, and Cummings. The AFS Club is indeed carrying out the AFS motto, Walk together, talk together, ye peoples of the earth. Then and only then shall ye have Peace. 55 FIFTH ROW: Robert Hartmon, Richard Bauernfeind, Gary Schettle, Bruce Benedict, Harry Franklin, Jeffrey Gaynor, James Bertelsen, William Huston. Senior Class Play We wouldn't have all of this trouble if Papa wasn't a.preacher! But PAPA WAS A PREACHER, so the children of Edwin Porter (Robert Peterson) and Pearl Porter (Mary Beth Van Putten) had to learn to take criticism. The chief critic of the family was the town's busybody, Miss Jonas (Carol Cleveland). She didn't think that Alyene (Sandra Hopkins, Pamela Ander- son) should roller-skate. Another so-called sin was that of Janette (Catherine Cumming) being en- thralled with her boy friend Orley Dunn's trumpet playing. According to Miss Jonas, Cecil (William Hopkins) and Raybon (Barry Rogers) shouldn't spend their time mooning over the sweetheart of West Texas, Helen Ludlow (Beth Kremer). However, Lucy Smith (Mary McKenzie) and Jenny Smith, (Pam Anderson, Julie Erickson) two sensible, church-going girls were acceptable in the eyes of Miss Jonas. The boys didn't appreciate the old-fashioned sisters and so they continued their attempts to charm Helen. Raybon's singing voice gave him an advantage, so Cecil learned a dance called The Buzzard Lope” from Jeffrey Cole (Stephen Chandler). When the boys fought to protect their cotton patch, Miss Jonas was there with her camera, as she always was, taking pictures of the disgraceful conduct of the preacher's children. Things started to happen when Hugh (Jeffrey Gaynor) came home from col- lege. Cecil was expelled from school for doing his dance in assembly, and he felt so ashamed that he ran away. Be- cause of this, Mother and Papa's twen- ty-fifth wedding anniversary celebration was cancelled. However, Cecil was found and re- turned home and Ed (Patrick Casanova) saved the day by producing some pic- tures he had taken of the State Police wrecking Miss Jonas's still for her herb tonic! Miss Jonas admitted that pictures could be deceiving and started winning the Porters' friendship. Raybon and Cecil were both dropped by Helen for a football player. However, Lucy and Jenny Smith had taken a spe- cial beauty course that did wonders as far as the boys' attitudes were con- cerned. With all the problems solved, the anniversary celebration continued as planned. Other characters who helped in the development of the play were the bride (Jean Engstrom) and groom (Nelson Echavarria). The play, PAPA WAS A PREACHER, from the book by Alyene Porter, was directed by Richard Gustafson, assisted by Gail Brown as student coordinator. Project! Project! Project! The fact that they were picked to repeat as Conference Champs was probably based on the return of star halfback Jim Bertelsen and not on the fact that there were no starters returning from last year's offensive or defensive line. For this rea- son the coaches put most of their hope in good backfield speed and the ability of a number of junior linemen to improve rapidly. The opening game on September 8 saw Hudson's 15-game winning streak go down the drain as they lost to Chippewa Falls 13-7. Fumbles, intercep- dons, and penalties hurt the Raider's offense. After three scoreless quarters, Chippewa scored twice, once on a partially blocked pass. Halfback Jim Bertelsen scored the only touchdown for the Hudson team. In their conference-opener, the Hudson team showed a crisper offense and much tougher defense than in the opening game. The 34-0 victory over Baldwin-Woodville saw Jim Bertelsen score four touchdowns and intercept five passes. End Bob Hartmon scored on a 57-yard pass play from quar- terback Tom Anderson. Butch Dahl intercepted two passes during the game. Although the Raiders rolled over Ellsworth 34- 12, their play was up and down. Bertelsen came up with 22 tackles and once again scored four touch- downs with funs of 4, 382 and 1 yards. Fullback Bill Engstrom scored on a two-yard plunge. The game that was tabbed as the title game for the Conference Championship saw the Hudson team defeated by a spirited Durand team by the score of 45-13. Bert ran for touchdowns of 60 and 62 yards. In their Homecoming game the Raiders found themselves going into the fourth quarter with the score tied 13-13. Bertelsen scored his second touchdown in the end zone to make the final score 27-13. Hartmon scored in the third quarter on a 56-yard pass play from Anderson. The Raiders rolled over Spring Valley as Ber- telsen scored five times in the first half. Anderson scored on a sneak and the junior fullback, Rick Nelson, scored on a five-yard run. The score was 46-20. The battle for the Little Brown Jug was one of the most exciting football wins over River Falls in many years. Because of his brilliant performance, Bert was named the state's Back-of-the-Week by the Associated Press. He ran for touchdowns of 96 and 8 yards, threw a touchdown pass of 55 yards late in the fourth quarter to end Bob Hartmon, kicked the winning point, and in the third quarter scored a safety which proved to be the difference in the final score. In die final game, Bertelsen scored on three runs and also on a 50-yard pass from Anderson. Butch Dahl scored on a four-yard run. Hudson's outstanding halfback, Jim Bertelsen, who earned the name The Horse because of his extreme desire and ability, ended his high school career by setting eight Middle Border Conference Football Records. Jim was named to the all-con- ference team his last three years. He was named to the All-Northwest Team as a junior and senior. This year Bert was named to die All-state team and named Wisconsin's Prep Back of the Year. Mr. Kadidlo-caoch, Robert Hartmon-co-captain, James Bertelsen-co-captain, Mr. Lee- coach. Laura Vindal and Ricky Gaynor served as crownbearers. Homecoming 1967 The Raiders at Hudson High School were hunting a victim, preferably a New Richmond Tiger. The slogan of the 1967 Homecoming was Raiders on Safari submitted by a senior, putting them in front for the trophy race. As the week flew by, the seniors stepped ahead to win the trophy for the third consecutive year. It really was a pep assembly to be remembered, for all the skits were very well done. After much excitement the parade made its way to our main street. The queen candidates were placed between the band, cheerleaders, Raidettes, and the floats. Introduced to Hudson as queen candidates were Chris Anderson, Jeani Engstrom, Ginny Jensen, Mar key Lanpher, and Debby Woodruff. By half-time the crowd was filled with anxiety to see who the new queen would be. The Homecoming Queen of 1966, Debby Coulter, fulfilled her last duty by presenting a bouquet of roses to Markey Lanpher. It was indeed a night not easily forgotten for all, es- pecially Markey who smiled with a twinkle and a tear in her eye. The Raiders did their best by overtaking the Tigers, the object of the safari. The team was victorious with a 27-13 score. Everyone was in good spirits for the dance at which Debby crowned Markey and presented her with the title of Homecoming Queen of 1967 . At half-time, lovely Markey Lanpher was chosen as our 1967 Homecoming Queen. The Royal Court Co-capta ins Bob Hartmon and J im Bertelsen es- corted the new queen to her throne. Dancing the Queen's Dance was a real pleasure. Right, Jim? Coaches House and Han- son saw their team come through in a squeaker by winning 7-6. The Raiders then played their first conference game at Durand and defeated them 13-6. In their opening home game the team played a 0-0 deadlock with Bald- win-Woodville. The next game saw the Squad in their second tie game of the season. This time the score was 13-13 against the New Richmond team. The team kept up its winning streak at Glenwood City by beating the Tigers by the score of 6-0. At River Falls the team suffered its first loss--the only loss of the season--by losing in a close game with the score 6-0. The final game of the season with Ellsworth saw the Hudson team score as many points as they scored in all their conference games combined. That score was 32-0. Although there were no individual stars on the team, the coaches felt that the boys worked very well together and always gave their full effort. The coaches thought it was a very enjoyable and successful season. Congratulations! Joining them were seniors Jeff Gaynor, Bill Brower, and Dick Bauemfeind; and juniors Rick Peterson, Joe Krier, Wade Bailey, Tim Haupt, and Curt Olson. The Raiders finished the regular season in sixth place with a 5-9 conference mark and an over-all record of 7-13. In tournament play, the Raiders lost the first round game 54-53 as Greg Birkel sunk a field goal in the final second to give the Ellsworth Panthers the victory. Hudson won the consolation game 69- 68 over the River Falls Wildcats. Coach Lee looks forward to a better season next year with the help of some good BM squad material. The lack of height has hurt the Raiders in the past few years but a lot of hustle has helped in tight spots and it should continue to do so. Helping Coach Lee through the year were Assis- tant Coach John Ewing and the managers, Marv Dunn, Larry Sandburg, and Charlie Anderson. Following Captain Andy Turner's fine performances, the young Raider squad molded quickly into a fast and ex- citing unit. They finished with a 4-3 conference re- cord with a 6-8-1 season record. With only two returning lettermen, Andy Turner and Bill Hopkins, Hudson dropped its first four dual meets and finished third in the two quadrangular meets before finishing the season without another loss. This year Hudson wrestled in the River Falls Class A Invitational. Bruce Benedict (HWT) placed second among stiff competition. In the Conference Tournament at Spring Valley, Andy Turner maintained his winning position and took the 103 Championship. Bruce Benedict took second after a strong first year, and Bill Hopkins finished third at 138 . While Ellsworth and New Richmond battled for the Regional Title, the Raiders placed Andy Turner first, Bruce Benedict second, and Jim Dahl (138 ) third. Andy then finished third at the Rice Lake Sectional. With only Andy Turner (103 ), Barry Rogers (133 ), Bill Hopkins (138 ), Bob Peterson (154 ), and Doug Mahnke (165 ) graduating, next year's squad looks strong and deep. Experienced returnees will be Scott Richie, Bill Wagner, Bruce Drost, Bob Atwood, Jim Dahl, Roger Ruelin, Dave Dulon, Tim Wells, Bob Knefelkamp, and Bruce Benedict. Track 1967 Hudson, now established as a track power in Wisconsin, had another fine season in 1967, Despite the losses of several top notch performers, the Hud- son trackmen, led by Jim Bertelsen, repeated as conference champs by tying River Falls for the title. The first big meet of the season was the Bloom- ington Track-O-Rama, one of the largest high school track meets in the nation. Hudson, the an- nual winner of the class C division due to its fine relay teams, again was the unofficial winner, since team points dash record of 10 flat, placed fifth in the long jump, and anchored the record-shattering 440-yard relay team, which ran a fantastic time of 44. 2 seconds. The sprint medley team also placed first in record time. All the rest of the relay teams placed fourth or better. At the conference meet, a fine team effort helped Hudson to gain a tie with a spirited River Falls team after a scoring discrepancy was revealed. At the Sectional meet in Rice Lake, Hudson placed second behind River Falls. The team would have won if the 880-yard relay team hadn't dropped the baton when a runner jarred his hand on a post on the track. Hudson sent six men in five different events to the state meet at Monona Grove. The mile relay team (McConaughey, Daniels, Sawyer, and Hart- mon), and Bob Peterson in the mile both failed to place. However, Jim Bertelsen took first in the low hurdles and second in the 100-yard dash, and Hud- son placed fifth in Class B . SECOND ROW: James Ahrens, Richard Lanpher, Edward Feola, Gregory Garner, Mr. Ewing, coach. FIRST ROW: David Cumming, Jerome Karras, William Hopkins, Bruce Utterback. A-SQUAD In only its third year at Hudson, cross country, under new coach, John Ewing, had an outstanding season. Coach Ewing found only two seniors and a total of three lettermen, but with good hard work and a good turnout of young runners he brought the team to an excellent season. Led by co-captains Greg Garner and Bill Hopkins, the team lost to only three Wisconsin schools all year. In the first meet of the year, Hudson swamped Baldwin-Woodville 19-44 as Garner broke the old course record. Cross Country The team then traveled to Mounds View where they placed second in a triangular meet behind Alexander Ramsey's B team. Durand fell to the Raiders 24-37. This was a followed by a one-sided 18-43 victory over Spring Valley in which Garner, Hopkins, and Utterback placed first, second, and third respectively, a feat they repeated in a triangular meet in which Hudson defeated Ellsworth and Spring Valley. At the Hudson Invitational, the boys finished a close seven points behind Unity beating out New Richmond, St. Croix Falls, Durand, and River Falls. The Raiders then surprised everyone by placing second behind St. Paul Park in a quadrangular meet edging out Simley and St. Thomas Academy. At the Conference Meet in River Falls, the Raiders fell to New Richmond by nine points de- spite Garner's second place finish. At the Sectional Meet disaster struck when Bruce Utterback, one of Hudson's top three runners, lost his shoe during the race; and the team lost its chance to enter the state meet, finishing fourth out of sixteen schools. Garner went on to the State Meet in Hartford, where he placed twelfth out of eighty-five runners, only eight seconds behind the winner. B-SQUAD SECOND ROW: Ronald Ziemann, Russell Whiten- ack, Mark Erickson. Barrie has taken an active part in a variety of activities and has exerted a wholesome influence by his unassuming manner. He was Hudson's A. F. S. representative to Switzerland in the summer of 1967. As all-school president he proved to be a capable leader. He was a valuable member of Band, Chorus, Glee Club, True Blue Annual staff, class play, and musical productions. Other activities in which he gave a good account of himself include Biology, German, Telescope, and H clubs. The faculty is pleased to present the represen- tative senior award to this friendly, cooperative, industrious, loyal, and deserving student of Hudson High School. All-American High School Football Player During his three years in Hudson High School, Jim Bertelsen has proved himself to be one of the most valuable athletes the school has ever had. Many awards and honors have been awarded to Jim, and in his senior year he was chosen as a member of the All-American Senior High School Football Team. For this honor, his high academic standing, and his ability as an all-around athlete, Hudson High School wishes to congratulate Jim Bertelsen. 92 James Bertelsen Our American Field Service student this year was Nelson Echavarria from Caracas, Venezuela. Caracas is the capital and largest city of Venezuela. Nelson arrived in the United States on August 24 when his plane landed in Miami, Florida. He took a bus to Richfield, Minnesota and arrived there twelve hours late because of a slow bus. During his stay in Hudson, he lived with his adopted family Mr. and Mrs. James Ostby, brother David and sister Janet. During his school year at Hudson High he has participated in numerous activities. He was a member of Biology, Ski, Chess, and Telescope clubs, was on the Student Council, and was in the class play. Because he comes from a warm climate, Nelson was eager to try skiing and ice skating. The cold weather was quite an experience for him. Since he has already been graduated from high school in Caracas, Nelson plans to go to college when he returns home to become a mechanical engineer. The greatest experience that a teenager can have is to be an American Field Service student for one year in the United States, living with an American Nelson Echayarria family. I hope this wonderful organization of A. F. S. continues for many years. Thanks to the people of Hudson for the nicest year of all my life in this great country. All who wish, may write to Nelson. His address is: Nelson Echavarria , n . , Lomas dei ciub mpico Good Will Ambassadors Calle la loma; Qta Karia-Kito Caracas, Venezuela On July 8, Barry Rogers, the 1967 American Field Service summer exchange student arrived at his summer home in Basel, Switzerland. Basel is located in northern Switzerland on the Rhine River. Barry lived with the Hanz G. Ramseier family. His father was a progressive worldwide salesman for Geigy Pharmaceutical Company. The other members of his family were his mother, Rosa, who was a wonderful cook, and three brothers; Hans Ruedi, 18, Fritz, 15, andUeli, 11. For three weeks during July, Barry lived in the Alps with his family in the small farming village of Gaarda. They often went hiking ten hours a day. Barry especially enjoyed traveling through the Bernese country side while eating Swiss cheese and Schokolade. All the A. F. S. students living in Switzerland spent ten days at the end of the summer traveling through the country. During this time they stayed with other families, had many parties and lots of fun. I am very grateful to all the people of Hudson for helping to make my stay in Switzerland possible. In further association with the A. F. S. , I have expanded the many wonderful experiences afforded me. I hope that many more people will become associated with the A. F. S. and realize how wonderful living with a foreign family or associating with foreign students can be. I feel that world friendship starts when people open their hearts to support such a worthwhile organ- ization as the American Field Service. Badger Girls’ State June Daniels The 1967 session of Badger Girls' State convened on June 10 on the campus of the University of Wis- consin in Madison. This year Hudson High School and the community of Hudson was represented by June Daniels. June was sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary who have done this for a number of years. The purpose of Badger Girls' State is to inspire and point out each individual's responsibility to America. It provided information on all levels of government. A mock government was set up in which all learned through actual participation to undertake these responsibilities earnestly. June resided in Chadbourne Hall during her busy week. Her time was closely scheduled with elections, lectures, discussions, and campaigns. Trust, con- fidence, responsibility, and love were discussed and practiced in all activities. I wish each girl could have this wonderful oppor- tunity. We certainly learned a lot through the program and by just being with each other. It was really great. I'd like to thank the American Legion Auxiliary for making this opportunity possible. Badger Boys’ State The annual Badger Boys' State was held in Ripon, Wisconsin. William Engstrom was the representative from Hudson to the event during fhe week of June 10 to 17, 1967. While in Ripon, Bill participated in the establish- ment and running of mock city, county, and state departments. The responsibilities and importance of political parties were demonstrated in lectures, campaigns, and conventions. Each boy received instruction and guidance in the fundamentals of his nation's democratic policy. A better understanding and a keener sense of duty instilled each representative with the desire to return to his community and put this knowledge to use. Many outstanding students of Wisconsin met and worked with Bill. Bill was able to participate in Badger Boys' State through the Hudson Chapter of the Parent Teacher Association. Attending Badger Boys' State was both an honor and an enjoyable privilege for me. I gained many good friends and a few very close ones. Each day this experience becomes more valuable and mean- ingful to me. My thanks goes to the Parent Teacher Association for this most rewarding experience.
