CLASS HISTORY Hawau has 1ts volcanoes, hurncanes, and earthquakes, but 1n the fall of 1955, 47 freshmen beached then rrgger canoes on the shores of Howard Lake Hxgh School At the head of our tnbal totem was Sam Gruenhagen, who was overruled only by the faculty He and lus ch1ef assxstant, V1ce Presxdent Erhe Engelman, spent most of the year s1tt1ng under the palm trees w1th lus Secretary Pns Davxdson, Treasurer Ahce Schrupp, and Wlth hrs Stu dent Couvcll Representat1ve Mar1lyn Anderson Janrce Klugow and Stan Haag were our Carmval queen and lung candldates Wxth Sam as head of our tr1be, we somehow mlssed out on xmtxatxon The palms begm to sway, as we remember the dancmg 1n scrence class w1th Mr Operm The palm trees and the troplcal chrnate must have agreed w1th Sam, for 1n the fall of 1956 he was agarn elected head of the tr1be Under h1m was VICE Pres1dent Tom Moore and Stu dent Councrl Rep M1ke Mxtchell and the hula hne was composed of Luc1l1e Mehnat, Secre tary, and Al1ce Schrupp, Treasurer The two b1g luaus of the year were the canuval w1th ou candrdates Lucllle Mehnat and Stan Haag as queen and klng, and Homecommg, w1th Manlyn Anderson, John Stephens, Gayle Brrkholz, and M1ke M1tchell as our candxdates Durrng the year we lost tr1besmen Lo1s Cochran, Luc1l1e Mehnat, Mary Wagner, Terry Robmson, Rollxe Krohn, and Ronme Pettzt We were glad for our return ln the fall of 1957, because we were consxdered upper tnbesmen Our tr1be now numbered 41 As our m1ghty chref we elected Tom Moore The cluef's trrbal councll was made up of kOl'11S and wahlms V1ce Presldent Stan Haag, Secretary Kay G1lmer Treasurer Ahce Schrupp, and Student Councrl Representatxve Make M1tche1l t1t, and Erlxe Engleman as our queen and lung candldates, and the Carruval w1th Elame M1chael and Sam Gruenhagen representmg our tr1be Many tnbesmen took part 1n the class play, It's Great To Be Crazy,' presented on Novemb 8th All the exc1tement of a volcano erupt1on came 1n February when we recerved our class nngs Early 1n the spnng the whole tr1be started working on the Junxor Sen1or banquet Out of thms World, whlch was held on May 16, 1958 As the year came to an end, we found we had lost Judy Drers and Lowell Makkeslson, and galned Elame M1chael In the fall of 1958, we d1d Koma Mal, or welcome to our semor year We are 40 rn number w1th Conme Elarne M1chael as Pres1dent ruhng our grass shack Our m1ghty ch1efta1n sat almost all the t1me under the Moana banyan tree hstemng to Vrce Pres Denny Gerber, Sec Al1ce Schrupp Treasurer IDIS Hansen, and Student Councrl Rep M1ke Mltchell s1ng1ng the Hawar ran war chant As beautxful and exc1t1ng as the breakers on the beach at Walklkl were Homecomlng and the Carmval Marllyn Anderson and M1ke Mrtchell were Homecommg royalty The other semor attendants were Gayle B1Ikh01Z and John Stephens Lo1s Hansen and Denny Gerber were Carruval queen and lung The whole tr1be went wrld as they lmtrated the freshmen on Homecomrng Day enJoy1ng as a kau kau was the class play, Anme Get Your Gun ' On May 8 1959, we enjoyed the Jumor senxor banquet Trop1cana, ln a wonderful south sea paradlse Baccalaureate servxce was held May 24, and graduatlon exerclses were held May 28, 1959 At the end of the year, we found we had lost Patsy Remer, but garned Bob Dredge Lowell Mlkkelson, and Carroll Rolfzen As the troprcal sun smks slowly m the west, we say Aloha to Howard Lake I-hgh We know each tnbal member w1ll go a d1fferent way 1n lrfe, but we know that everyone w1ll always re member our happy days at Howard Lake Hxgh 52 1 . . . : s - s I -- . , As thrilling as surf-boarding was Homecoming, with Gayle lhrkholz, Stan Haag, Ruth Pet- . n . CLASS PROPHECY Here we are ln the town of Howard Lake, 1n 1969 The town IS busy preparmg for the 10 year IBUHIOH of the graduated class of 1959 The class members are commg from all over The f1ISt to arnve IS V1rg1l Horsch, who IS now dr1v1ng the head bus for the Oestre1ch Bus Lmes, wh1ch IS owned and operated by Denn1s Oestre1ch V1rg1l IS greeted by Mr Howard Barth, who 15 now the pr1nc1pa1 of Howard Lake I-hgh School Mr Barth's pr1vate secretary M155 Gayle B1rkholz IS Wlllll h1m Next we see MIS Manlyn Anderson, who IS now the cheerleader coach at Cokato, who accompamed by Erland Engleman who IS the basketball coach, It seems that the Cokato Cards st11l haven't won a game w1th the Lakers What's tl1at strange no1se 'P It sounds l1ke a Moose, but It IS Just Pnssy Dav1dson try1ng out her new Moose call The moose call 15 answered by the strange quack1ng no1se of a baby duck, who IS be1ng taught how to quack by Kay Gllmer Lookmg down the street we see a large crowd at the tram depot It seems that some great 1on model 1S amvmg After ta1k1ng to Shxrley Yager, who IS pres1dent of the SHBS QStan Haag 1n Bermuda Shortsj fan club, we fmd that It IS none other that Stan Knees Haag, com1n for the reun1on He IS gettxng off the tra1n now, he IS followed by h1s manager Adram Bennet Cha les Duske We hear Mr Duske g1v1ng d1rect1ons to the photographers to take p1ctures of Stan's legs only, because he has unfortunately broken h1s collarbone and IS weanng a cast Oh' There's Ruth Pett1t Johnson, who 15 the frrst lady of Johnson and Johnson Baby product company After all the passengers leave the tra1n, the eng1neer, Harold Casey Blanchett Joms the group on the way to the school They chmb the h1ll from the depot and prepare to cross the h1ghway, whxch IS patrolled by Sam Cr1ck Gruenhagen A flash of RED, 1S seen as the famous sc1ent1st Tom Moore zooms by 1n h1s Jet propelled sports car Tom has just returned from the moon where he found M1ke Stuart busy makmg P1223 Gary B1rkho1z JOIDS the group after lock1ng up h1s grocery store From 1ns1de a w1ld yellxng IS heard, then Gary real1zes that he has locked up h1S head clerk Lo1s Hansen 1n the store After 1ett1ng her out they began walk1ng to the school On the way they meet Gerry Ma1n who tells them that he th11'1kS that he w1ll fmally f1n1sh h1s freshman year of college after 10 long years of trymg pla1n that lt IS Mlke M1tchell's home for t1red athletes After entenng the school lobby, they meet two former classmates Pat Ma1n, who now has her own column 1n the paper for the broken hearted, IS g1v1ng Jamce Klugow adv1ce on mar nage In the hall we not1ce an electromc drsplay created by MISS E K M1chael, who lS the phys1cs teacher at Howard Lake Hlgh School Looklng at the dxsplay are four former classmates Deanna Mahlstedt, Mane Marketon, Carolyn Shepperd, and Dor1s Churchxll, who are now elementary teachers at Howard Lake As we open the gym doors we are greeted by Lowell Mrkkleson who 15 the caterer for tl11s affa1r, he IS ably assisted by Marlene Bluhm, h1s ch1ef d1et1t1an Lowell pomts out a huge mural on the wall and explarns that rt has been pamted by Ron The Man M1elke profess1onal baseball player and art1st In a far off corner we not1ce a flgure lookmng for someth1ng, could It be Lenny Parnschab IS looklng for h1S self 1nvented non looseable contact lenses From outs1de we hear a roar, and someone say that Mr Denn1s Gerber, the tombstone sales n has just arrlved mn h1s new shmy yellow and wh1te Cad ' Cormng down the sta1rway dressed 1n a sa1lor outf1t and carry1ng a large trophy IS Al1ce Schrupp She announces that she Just placed f1rst ID the annual sa1lboat races at Howard Lake Already seated at a table are Ralph and Wxlly Krohn, who Jomtly own Wr1ght County's largest farm Seated w1th them IS Carroll Rolfzon, who now owns the bowlmg alley at Wxnsted The guests are greeted and welcomed by the Master of Ceremorues Bob Heuer Bob announces that the class of '59 has two great authors to 1ts cred1t, Bruce Zander and Roger Schmexg Mr Schmexg Just f1n1shed a sequel to S1ncla1r Lewxs s Ma1n Street, It IS called W1nsted Roa Next Judy Cochran the M1stress of Ceremomes announces that Bob Dredge w1ll entertam the aud1ence Wlth a select1on of danclng He has chosen the dy1ng swan from The Swan Lake Ballet As the program draws to a close we hear someone commg down the steps, we fmd that lt 1S John Stephens carry1ng a pa1l and small shovel He announces that he 15 a Chlef gravel 1nspector of the state and he Just came from a nearby gravel p1t because he had some last mmute work to do Thls IS the f1rst txme slnce graduatlon that the entlre class has been able to get together Th1s even1ng has been a joyous OCCZSIOH mdeed 53 u n . 1 fashu . . . . . . a . v I a 1 1 .1 . . . . . . g As they near the school, Gerry asks about the new building on the comer.
