CLASS HISTORY Hawau has 1ts volcanoes, hurncanes, and earthquakes, but 1n the fall of 1955, 47 freshmen beached then rrgger canoes on the shores of Howard Lake Hxgh School At the head of our tnbal totem was Sam Gruenhagen, who was overruled only by the faculty He and lus ch1ef assxstant, V1ce Presxdent Erhe Engelman, spent most of the year s1tt1ng under the palm trees w1th lus Secretary Pns Davxdson, Treasurer Ahce Schrupp, and Wlth hrs Stu dent Couvcll Representat1ve Mar1lyn Anderson Janrce Klugow and Stan Haag were our Carmval queen and lung candldates Wxth Sam as head of our tr1be, we somehow mlssed out on xmtxatxon The palms begm to sway, as we remember the dancmg 1n scrence class w1th Mr Operm The palm trees and the troplcal chrnate must have agreed w1th Sam, for 1n the fall of 1956 he was agarn elected head of the tr1be Under h1m was VICE Pres1dent Tom Moore and Stu dent Councrl Rep M1ke Mxtchell and the hula hne was composed of Luc1l1e Mehnat, Secre tary, and Al1ce Schrupp, Treasurer The two b1g luaus of the year were the canuval w1th ou candrdates Lucllle Mehnat and Stan Haag as queen and klng, and Homecommg, w1th Manlyn Anderson, John Stephens, Gayle Brrkholz, and M1ke M1tchell as our candxdates Durrng the year we lost tr1besmen Lo1s Cochran, Luc1l1e Mehnat, Mary Wagner, Terry Robmson, Rollxe Krohn, and Ronme Pettzt We were glad for our return ln the fall of 1957, because we were consxdered upper tnbesmen Our tr1be now numbered 41 As our m1ghty chref we elected Tom Moore The cluef's trrbal councll was made up of kOl'11S and wahlms V1ce Presldent Stan Haag, Secretary Kay G1lmer Treasurer Ahce Schrupp, and Student Councrl Representatxve Make M1tche1l t1t, and Erlxe Engleman as our queen and lung candldates, and the Carruval w1th Elame M1chael and Sam Gruenhagen representmg our tr1be Many tnbesmen took part 1n the class play, It's Great To Be Crazy,' presented on Novemb 8th All the exc1tement of a volcano erupt1on came 1n February when we recerved our class nngs Early 1n the spnng the whole tr1be started working on the Junxor Sen1or banquet Out of thms World, whlch was held on May 16, 1958 As the year came to an end, we found we had lost Judy Drers and Lowell Makkeslson, and galned Elame M1chael In the fall of 1958, we d1d Koma Mal, or welcome to our semor year We are 40 rn number w1th Conme Elarne M1chael as Pres1dent ruhng our grass shack Our m1ghty ch1efta1n sat almost all the t1me under the Moana banyan tree hstemng to Vrce Pres Denny Gerber, Sec Al1ce Schrupp Treasurer IDIS Hansen, and Student Councrl Rep M1ke Mltchell s1ng1ng the Hawar ran war chant As beautxful and exc1t1ng as the breakers on the beach at Walklkl were Homecomlng and the Carmval Marllyn Anderson and M1ke Mrtchell were Homecommg royalty The other semor attendants were Gayle B1Ikh01Z and John Stephens Lo1s Hansen and Denny Gerber were Carruval queen and lung The whole tr1be went wrld as they lmtrated the freshmen on Homecomrng Day enJoy1ng as a kau kau was the class play, Anme Get Your Gun ' On May 8 1959, we enjoyed the Jumor senxor banquet Trop1cana, ln a wonderful south sea paradlse Baccalaureate servxce was held May 24, and graduatlon exerclses were held May 28, 1959 At the end of the year, we found we had lost Patsy Remer, but garned Bob Dredge Lowell Mlkkelson, and Carroll Rolfzen As the troprcal sun smks slowly m the west, we say Aloha to Howard Lake I-hgh We know each tnbal member w1ll go a d1fferent way 1n lrfe, but we know that everyone w1ll always re member our happy days at Howard Lake Hxgh 52 1 . . . : s - s I -- . , As thrilling as surf-boarding was Homecoming, with Gayle lhrkholz, Stan Haag, Ruth Pet- . n .
