--.-..-..-.WY BASKETBALL The Howard basketball squad during the 40-41 campaign when Coach Elder came up with a fine crop of ideas and an experienced team to pull the Pirates out of the mire where they dwelled the year before and came within a hair's breadth of piloting them to the championship. When the opening basketball call was sounded there were four veterans on hand out of the first five the preceeding year. They were all enthused and anxious for the first tussle of the season. After chalking four victories for the Pirates, they were then de- feated by their most deadly enemy, the Moline Hornets. This being the first defeat of the year, the Howard Pirates came back more strongly the following weeks and chalked up four more wins, and then we seemed to meet those Stinging Hornets again. By winning this game the Pirates would be tied for first place in the conference, otherwise they would place second. Perhaps the l team had been keyed up to high for the game, at any rate the Moline Hornets won a hard fought battle with an over-time included. Having three games left to play the Pirates battled their way into second place in the conference. With an elaps of a week the Pirates got theirselves in shape for the District Tournment. This time the Pirates made up their minds that they were the best squad in the conference and they really showed the audience some good games for they won the tournment over Moline with a large margin. A This set the stage for the trip to Fredonia and the Regional Tournment. While attending the tournment the Pirates won over Altoona the first night by a considerable sum. Although the second night they had a more stiff competition, for this time they won a one point victory over Virgil. This win put the Pirates into the finals again and up against the Moline Hornets for the fifth time in one season. The Hornets were again fortunate in winning, but not with an easy task. During the season the Pirates were also invited to an Invitational Tournment this year with Moline being our host. This is the third time in one season that Howard and Moline came in contact with each other in the finals at a tournment. In this tourn- ment Howard walked away with the second place trophy. The Pirates walked away with the honors of the Howard High School this season by winning lg games out of 22. They also won three trophies this season one being a first place trophy and two being second place trophies.
