FOOTBALL The howard High School Pirates played through a fairly tough schedule, this year in football. With a new assistant coach and a whole flock of new freshies who indicated that they wanted to play football. With assistant Coach Arnold taking care of the linemen and Coach Elder developing the back field men, the team came along in fine style. Opening the campaign on the gridiron of Eureka, playing Eureka's reserves, with a win to the credit of the Howard Pirates. This set the stage for the Home Coming clash with Moline on the Howard's field. All four periods of the game the Pirates really spread it on thiekg they had a right to because it was the first time in eleven years that the Moline Hornets begged for mercy at the of the Howard Pirates. The next battle was away from home with the Leon High School. With tLat steady drive of the Howard Pirates on the gridiron they once again came home with victory. Away from home for the following tiff. Howard was invited down to Cnney for the manslaughter of the seasen. This game was considerei as the toughest on the schedule, maybe it was because the Pirates were defeated by a score of 12 to C. The Pirates got back into the saddle the next week and defeated Madison with a score of 6 to C. The next two weeks the Cedarvale and Peru games went down in the score beak as victories for the Pirates. Finishing up the season with a single at home with Sedan. The boys played a bang up ball game on their own field and being the last game for the Seniors tbey were really full of pep and over-flowing with enthusiam. May I refer to the team in this game as the four horse men with seven rams in front for they were actually driving that field for touchdowns. When the final gun sounded the score was 51 to 6 in favor of Howard. It was a tired and battered Pirate team when the S game grind came to a close. The boys were well pleased to be back in the class room studying and waiting for basketball season to start again. As rewards for the season about 15 men received letters.
