A A rm L May 16, 1951 Dear Menzenita: A I was 'ust sitting here looking at the calendar- do ou know that 10 C3 C a 9 0 1 9 years ago today we walked down the aisle and received our diplomas, 1 started digging among some of my things and found the annual our class put out in 1941. lt was really a good annual. As I glanced through the pages, it brought back many happy memories. Do you remember? September 5, 1937 forty-five Freshmen, stumbled up the stairs and halls to the auditorium where they were greeted in turn by the teacher and upper classmates. So thus our careers began under the guidance of Miss Payne. , ' Just one week after we had embarked upon our journey, we were initiat- ed by our enthusiastic supgriorsi the sophomores. At the fall festival we were very elated when we received first prize for our float. And do you remember in the fall of 1938 there were only forty members of our old freshmen class to begin as sophomoresfand it was our time to initiate the freshmen?f We were quite easy on them considering our treatment the year before. And we were very proud that five members of our class received football letters that year. At last, Juniors, with Hr. Bergsma and Hrs. Buchele helping us through this year. 'One of the schools biggest events was the presentation of ouf junior play, NISE COLQNEQQxQAlQ,H which proved to be the best play ever given. Cn April 18, we entertained the Seniors with a glorious banquet. The theme HSQHlQQ3H:GA5QQH-EABTXN was carried out with white picket fence covered with flowers, and Spanish moss hanging from the ceiling. In the center of the room, a tulip bed, set off the atmos- phere of the theme. After the speeches that go with banquets, the Juniors and Seniors went to the Willet Hall for dancing. In return, the Seniors gave us a picnic. And once again we won first prize at the fall festival for our float. Here we were in 1941 on the last lap of our high school days with thirty-three members and with Nr. Arnold and Mr. Bergsma telling us the correct turns. We got our class rings, ordered while Juniors. Have you forgotten how the juniors entertained us at a HHAWAll5E LUAQH given April 17 at the Presbyterian Church with the HKings of Sweet Swingu to dance to afterwards? To score another hit we presented HYOUR EQCE IS FAQlLlA3H, a three act play. And do you remember how excited we were about our skip day and what a glorious adventure we had? Have you forgotten our HClass night, Baccalaureate and Commencement nightn. and how we all drew a breath of relief to think we were out of high e school? Mr. Holmes was our 4 old Spenser that year with Mr. Yoder as assistant. During that year Iar and Virgil Jay, Dwayne Arndt, and Jualita Lanning dropped out and we gained three more in number, Betty Corby, Billy warner, and incidental- ly he has, along with Freddie Rhodes, been called a mischief maker and been accused of being the cause of Mr. Langels hair turning gray. Phyllis Dutton also became one of our number that year. The class entered a float in the all School Parade on the subject of HMoline Hornets Died in Action.U We won the first prize of 310 for this. We had two picnics and two parties during the year, and took an active part in planning the all school Christmas party and also the last day of school jaunt which took us to Independence. That year 552 of our students were on thehhonor roll. On September 4, 1939, our class entered the school again, 40 in number and a little more confident of ourselves. We laughed and had a big time over the mistakes that the Freshmen made, and I doubt that there was one of our number who failed to recall the same mistakes made the year before. That year Coach Elder was our Spenser with Mr. Holmes as the assistant. In this year we lost Jack Pulley, Neoma Shipman, and Raymond Winn. We had a trail-blazing picnic and had one party in Mr. Bergsma's room. .Qur third year, the class composed of 58 members, we started to school the second day of September. We lost Fred Rhodes, who is going to the Fredonia schools. This year there is an average of two girls for every boy, the number being 25 girls and 13 boys, Mr. Holmes is our Spenser with Mr. Yoder as assistant. We are losing Betty Brinkruff at the beginning of the second semester when she will become a member of the Senior class and graduate this spring. Our class engoyed a joint party with the Seniors in the Gym in October, drank cider and ate A A th l NOne Delirious cookies. On November 22 the class.prescnted e p ay Night,H under the able guidance of Miss Thornton, which proved to be a howling success, even though the weather was not so agreeable. Our lans are concerned with giving the best Junior-Senior Banquet future p - - , yet, and trying to be better examples of dignified Seniors than some of those that we have with us at the present time. We started too school, as most good littel boys and gals do when they gets to that certain stage, as the greenest of Freshies lat year. We became not quite so green when we were inishiated by the so--called sofistikated Sofomores of last year, upperclassmun Junures of this year. Us girls wore knee pants while the boys maid whooppee with our dresses and make-up, We all wore green hareribbons and honions to make us look greener than we natchurely wood. Us girls had to bow to the Sofomores while the boys curtsied to them. And, of coarse, we had the tradishonal task of carrying books. Our nest grate event was the Old Settlers Reunion which happened on September 29 and..... ...... the school parade. With a new assistant coach and a whole flock of new freshies who indicated that they wanted to play football. With assistant Coach Arnold taking care of the linemen and Coach Elder developing the back field men, the team came along in fine style. Opening the campaign on the gridiron of Eureka, playing Eureka's reserves, with a win to the credit of the Howard Pirates. This set the stage for the Home Coming clash with Moline on the Howard's field. All four periods of the game the Pirates really spread it on thiekg they had a right to because it was the first time in eleven years that the Moline Hornets begged for mercy at the of the Howard Pirates. The next battle was away from home with the Leon High School. With tLat steady drive of the Howard Pirates on the gridiron they once again came home with victory. Away from home for the following tiff. Howard was invited down to Cnney for the manslaughter of the seasen. This game was considerei as the toughest on the schedule, maybe it was because the Pirates were defeated by a score of 12 to C. The Pirates got back into the saddle the next week and defeated Madison with a score of 6 to C. The next two weeks the Cedarvale and Peru games went down in the score beak as victories for the Pirates. Finishing up the season with a single at home with Sedan. The boys played a bang up ball game on their own field and being the last game for the Seniors tbey were really full of pep and over-flowing with enthusiam. May I refer to the team in this game as the four horse men with seven rams in front for they were actually driving that field for touchdowns. When the final gun sounded the score was 51 to 6 in favor of Howard. It was a tired and battered Pirate team when the S game grind came to a close. The boys were well pleased to be back in the class room studying and waiting for basketball season to start again. As rewards for the season about 15 men received letters. When the opening basketball call was sounded there were four veterans on hand out of the first five the preceeding year. They were all enthused and anxious for the first tussle of the season. After chalking four victories for the Pirates, they were then de- feated by their most deadly enemy, the Moline Hornets. This being the first defeat of the year, the Howard Pirates came back more strongly the following weeks and chalked up four more wins, and then we seemed to meet those Stinging Hornets again. By winning this game the Pirates would be tied for first place in the conference, otherwise they would place second. Perhaps the l team had been keyed up to high for the game, at any rate the Moline Hornets won a hard fought battle with an over-time included. Having three games left to play the Pirates battled their way into second place in the conference. With an elaps of a week the Pirates got theirselves in shape for the District Tournment. This time the Pirates made up their minds that they were the best squad in the conference and they really showed the audience some good games for they won the tournment over Moline with a large margin. A This set the stage for the trip to Fredonia and the Regional Tournment. While attending the tournment the Pirates won over Altoona the first night by a considerable sum. Although the second night they had a more stiff competition, for this time they won a one point victory over Virgil. This win put the Pirates into the finals again and up against the Moline Hornets for the fifth time in one season. The Hornets were again fortunate in winning, but not with an easy task. During the season the Pirates were also invited to an Invitational Tournment this year with Moline being our host. This is the third time in one season that Howard and Moline came in contact with each other in the finals at a tournment. In this tourn- ment Howard walked away with the second place trophy. The Pirates walked away with the honors of the Howard High School this season by winning lg games out of 22. They also won three trophies this season one being a first place trophy and two being second place trophies.
