The first with a single merchant in Hornellsville was Col. Ira Davenpor 'fffgaami in 1815 wagon load of goods, driving 300 miles from Harpersfield, Delaware County. He built with his own hands the first store, a frame structure 18 by 20 feet, ' building later used as a kitchen for the old Black Horse Tavern. Davenport hauled his goods by team from Catskill, New York, and later opened stores in other places. The first village library established in Western New York was provided by the Hornell Library Association, incorporated in 1868. St. James Mercy Hospital was established in Hornell in 1890 while the Bethesda Hospital was established and incorporated January 10, 1916. The churches in the city date back a century with the organization of the First Presbyterian Church in 1832. This was followed by the St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in 1849g the First Baptist Church, October 17, 18525 and Christ Episcopal Church in 1854. Since the flood in 1935, citizens of Hornell have seen the city undergo a moderniza- tion and reconstruction of various civic projects. Bridges, destroyed by raging flood waters, were rebuilt and a flood control project has been carried out. Two thoroughly modern theaters have been added for the enjoyment of the movie fans. In July, 1940, the dream of all Hornell boys and girls came trueg a swimming pool and well equipped bath-house was dedicated to the Maple City Park.
