'v, 'E , Wd 5 7 IVUVV ROM the days when it emerged from the forest, Hornell's growth has been largely due to railroads. The period of the city's first rapid growth began with the construction of the New York and Erie Railroad. In 1841 the road's pile driver, a steam machine combining a pile driver, locomotive and saw-mill, appeared at Hornell, then known as Hornellsville. Running out of funds, the railroad company for a time suspended operations, but finally the road was completed. The Hrst locomotive reached Hornell in September, 1850. Progress of the place rapidly followed. November 19, 1851, the Hornellsville Tribune made its bow. The village was incorporated June 28, 1852, but it was not until 1888 that it was incorporated as a city. Building boomed. There was not a vacant house in the community. In 1851 Hornellsville had about 100 houses, two churches and two schools. Cobbls Hotel, located at the corner of Main and Canisteo Streets, was then the gathering place of travelers on the new road. The first Erie shop for shedj was built in 18-19 and enlarged the next year to ac- commodate three engines and machinery for their repair. It burned in 1856. Ground was broken for new shops and an engine house and the foundation laid in 1854, as the old shops were too small. Today there are many miles of switching tracks in Hornell and hundreds of cars pass through daily. The ancient shops have given place to new ones, covering several acres. Judge George Hornell, from whom the community gets its name, made the first settlement in the town as early as 1793, purchasing 2,000 or 3,000 acres of land and erecting a grist and saw mill. At that time the nearest grist mill was at Elmira, sixty miles by later road but nearly 100 by the roads the pioneers were obliged to take. journeys to that mill occupied weeks. For seventeen years Judge Hornell was the life of the settlement and the embodiment of its history. 'va- M Xa if .. . ,aaufez ' . L , .' wifi ' - ., 351. xv Q THEN Q--,. Under his pat :--vm., V . . ., ' 4. in the town was established. It was located in a village blockhous ':u ii'2fQ5 ISS1'df5':t 'wg town. The first school inside the village was built in 1813. The district pu i for a school in 1833, on the point between Canisteo and Church Streets, for 1 U - I 'fl' T, 4 the Old Red Schoolhouse was built at a cost of S200. It was 22 by 28 feet ' ': 'f ,3.L'l 8 Wu, Many farmers' sons attending boarded in the village. The year 1922 saw the bui U of the present school which we know as Hornell High School. . ,,.... The first with a single merchant in Hornellsville was Col. Ira Davenpor 'fffgaami in 1815 wagon load of goods, driving 300 miles from Harpersfield, Delaware County. He built with his own hands the first store, a frame structure 18 by 20 feet, ' building later used as a kitchen for the old Black Horse Tavern. Davenport hauled his goods by team from Catskill, New York, and later opened stores in other places. The first village library established in Western New York was provided by the Hornell Library Association, incorporated in 1868. St. James Mercy Hospital was established in Hornell in 1890 while the Bethesda Hospital was established and incorporated January 10, 1916. The churches in the city date back a century with the organization of the First Presbyterian Church in 1832. This was followed by the St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in 1849g the First Baptist Church, October 17, 18525 and Christ Episcopal Church in 1854. Since the flood in 1935, citizens of Hornell have seen the city undergo a moderniza- tion and reconstruction of various civic projects. Bridges, destroyed by raging flood waters, were rebuilt and a flood control project has been carried out. Two thoroughly modern theaters have been added for the enjoyment of the movie fans. In July, 1940, the dream of all Hornell boys and girls came trueg a swimming pool and well equipped bath-house was dedicated to the Maple City Park. Thus the city of Hornell flourishes as Time marches on.', H R,,,,l p W ,11 1 1 -- '- ua . ,PJ-1'.-1, , ., ,- . sq, ' , ... '9?'H .. Without his energetic support, there would not have been such evident success in the Senior projectsg Without his pleasant humor, there would have been lacking the harmony that char- acterized all its activities. He has made 1941 a year that the Class can never forget. 4 INISTHA BU!-IBD UF EDUCATION STANDING COMMITTEES BUILDING SITES REPAIRSKA. M. Seaman, Chairmang F. V. Matthews, Gertrude B. V421 Just another teacher is what an outsider might say about the average school fac- ulty member, but Hornell High School students are convinced that their teachers art understanding, sympathetic human beings with whom they can have very enjoyable times. This was clearly evident at the faculty-student basketball game last fall when the teachers exchanged their dignity for some wholesome fun on the basketball floor. Inci- dently, our advisers proved to be good losers. Again in the spring our teachers co-operated with the best of good will when the high school sponsored its first field day. On this special occasion one found teachers in the midst of baseball and basketball players, archers, golfers, bowlers, cyclists, and every field of sports one could imagine. At times we weren't quite able to tell which were the teachers and which were the students! We, the students of Hornell High, shall not forget the times the teachers have helped us through our diiiiculties, the long hours they have spent helping us reach the goal for which we have worked these four years, and the good nature with which they have done it. We shall not only remember them as excellent teachers in the classroom, but also as grand individuals, full of fun and good sportsmanship, which is equally important and grand to remember. ffw-.NIJ p Maman My 7: Lf 1? 7 E LLAJ Ml t1,CA,c,4,-.LJ i , n V 5, ,, 3, ai '. Mingled with its many activities has been the spirit of good feeling and co-operation which existed among its members. Attracting a record crowd, To the Ladies, the Senior play, was the first prosperous undertaking of the year. The Senior Ball although presented under difficulties proved to be a colorful spec- tacle as well as a financial success. Two movies were s onsored b the class as a mone makin ro'ect and due to the P Y Y S P 1 co-operation of the townspeople greatly increased the treasury. Senior Day, highlighted with an assembly and banquet was carried out for the en- joyment of all. All 250 members of the Senior Class have participated in some activity to make this the best as well as the largest graduating class in the history of Hornell High School. 19 WARREN AMPHLETT eewullysn Artist . . . student . . . athlote. Organized under the purpose to create, maintain and extend throughout the community high standards of Christian character, the club has more than fulfilled this purpose. Many projects have been carried out throughout the school year of which the distribution of Thanksgiving baskets was one of the worth while ones. The club, Linder the combined sponsorship of the school and Y has for its mem- bers a group of fellows selected from the entire school body. They are chosen for their personal character, and all-around friendship. The bi-weekly meetings are held at the Y, where a good time is had by everyone. The club was a success and through the years, under the advice of Miss Hart, has grown in its means of helping as well as in size. This club is mainly for Freshmen and Sophomores, with a two-year program. Outside of club hours, Hallowe'en parties, skating parties, and private dances are enjoyed by club members. He has done a grand job of pro- moting musical interest among the boys as well as among the girls and we hope he will remain many more years to continue this work. 74 ' WX? For the past two years the Volcano has been a member of the Empire State School Press Association. Both years Hornell has been represented at the annual fall con- ventions of the organization in Syracuse, by the editor and business manager of the school paper.
