HOUGH it effects almost everyone's daily life in one way or another, the students of Hornell High School hardly realize the extent of the importance our city has in the Erie Railroad system or even the Erie's importance to Hornell, itself. As Hornell became one of the terminals of the Erie far back in the history of the road, only fifteen years after the actual beginning of the system in 1835, it at once became one of the basic points in the vast network which today spreads far out over our country in all directions. Its location as a dividing point between the eastern and western districts of the railroad, and also its terminal position at the intersection of the three divisions, the Susquehanna, the Allegheny, and the Buffalo, makes Hornell the most important junction on the Erie system. In Hornell, the Erie maintains one of its two principal locomotive repair shops where the engines are inspected daily, and minor adjustments and general repairs made. Also, by means of the large classification yards, the Erie is able to give the city and its trading area the fastest possible service on carload schedules for the East, West and North. Another highlight of this railroad, centered in our city, is the supply house located here.
