HOUGH it effects almost everyone's daily life in one way or another, the students of Hornell High School hardly realize the extent of the importance our city has in the Erie Railroad system or even the Erie's importance to Hornell, itself. As Hornell became one of the terminals of the Erie far back in the history of the road, only fifteen years after the actual beginning of the system in 1835, it at once became one of the basic points in the vast network which today spreads far out over our country in all directions. Its location as a dividing point between the eastern and western districts of the railroad, and also its terminal position at the intersection of the three divisions, the Susquehanna, the Allegheny, and the Buffalo, makes Hornell the most important junction on the Erie system. In Hornell, the Erie maintains one of its two principal locomotive repair shops where the engines are inspected daily, and minor adjustments and general repairs made. Also, by means of the large classification yards, the Erie is able to give the city and its trading area the fastest possible service on carload schedules for the East, West and North. Another highlight of this railroad, centered in our city, is the supply house located here. This, too, is very important, for requisitions for supplies from any part of the af'--ixiii A ,HM-J -XXX lHl lllll

HHHHUHII .. Vectra, if 1 ,J Erie system must eventually be filled at Hornell. The storehouse for these is a most interesting and revealing spot, and contains an enormous supply of all sorts of materials, the value of which is the large sum of six million dollars. Once again the importance of Hornell in the Erie system is shown by the fact that both the center for the accounting of the entire railroad and also the main time- keeping oHice is located here. Occupying such an important position in a system the size of the Erie, it would be quite impossible for a city in Hornell's place not to be affected in some measure by this great industry, and so we find that, with the rise and decline of activity on the Erie, the prosperity of Hornell Huctuates proportionately. Further confirmation of this may also be deduced from the fact that the Erie employs a total of two thousand, two hundred local residents and annually spends some five million dollars here. As the Erie is the theme of our book, we have tried to make clear to you how very important this industry is to our city and our school, for indeed, the lives of all of us, as long as we live in or around Hornell, will be in close parallel with the Erie Railroad. For this reason, we feel that if any Hornell organization should be honored in our book, the Erie would alone completely qualify and would alone meet our ideal. f,i...,, . , ,X Vnxx.. .Mm M-xx-AN .. ., X-vwfx Xxx Rig
