Q MW DONALD SPENCER DONALD HOLMLUND Principal Vice-Principal FACULTY PROVES A VALUABLE II Capably filling a vital role, Principal Donald Spencer directed all faculty and student activities in the process called education. Vice-Principal Don Holmlund, advisor of the Board of Control, assisted in the coordination of school events. New personalities enlivened the school year. Ad- ditions to the faculty included Jerry Anderson in physical education, health, and world problems: George Asan in western civilization and sociologyg Ron Cygan in Englishg Betty Fitchner in home economics: Douglas James in choir, Joan King and Lorraine Whitlock in libraryg Myron Lee in business law, typing, and business math: Lawrence Nladden in Germang Tom Thomas in swimmingg and Barbara VVhitney in English. Many teachers studied to improve educational skills during the summer preceding the opening of school in September. Bill Giersch attended the University of the Americas in Mexico City, John Hogan directed Blithe Spirit as part of the re- quirements for his Master's degree at Eastern Washington -State College, Don Holmlund re- ceived his h'Iaster's degree at Central Washington State College, and Bill Jamison studied at Wash- ington State University. Other teachers who devoted the summer to study included Mary Kreps at Pacific Lutheran University, Myron Lee at Central Washington State College, and Susan Swanson at the University of Washington. Prin- cipal Don Spencer also attended summer sessions at the University of Washington. Activities out of school strengthened friendships between teachers and students. Chosen chairman of the Sunshine Kids Drive, Mr. Jamison planned the overall program which included selling Christ- mas trees, collecting toys and giving radio broad- casts. Members of SHOUT added their efforts to provide happy holidays for the children of Grays Harbor. As counselors, three faculty members-Dorothy Ladley, Kenneth Leach, and Peter Hegg-pro- vided hours of thoughtful advice to students concerning academic and personal problems. In addition to counseling, Mrs. Ladley advised AFS, FTA, and SHOUT, Mr. Leach supervised ac- tivities of the Honor Society: and Mr. Hegg coached golf. The faculty regretfully noted the retirement 'of John Rooney, mechanical drawing teacher, at the end of the year. THE HESPERIAN staff pays tribute to him for his faithful and successful years as a teacher. Miss Fitchner supervises the preparation of refreshments for the Christmas party given by her home economics students for the faculty. THE PROCESS PAUL BROOK U. S. GIRLS AND The Girls' League, headed by Mary jo Frodel, strove to be an outstanding organization of Hoquiam High. Before the open- ing of school in September, several girls cleaned and painted the concession stand at the Olympic Stadium where the League later made money to finance the year's activities. The girls fashioned candy Christmas wreaths for the hospitals and filled a Christmas basket with food and toys for a needy family. They also spon- sored a foster child in Viet Nam, sending her money, clothes, and food. The League sponsored Happiness Week in October based on Peanuts characters to promote happiness throughout the school. lrlach month they presented the Girl of the Month award to an outstanding senior girl. A Christmas program, dances after games, and the second annual style show on Valentine's Day highlighted the girls' calendar. The May Dance following the lWother's Day Tea in the gym constituted the climax of a suc- cessful year. Sergeant Gary Ostlund discussed draft requirements as well as careers and opportunities for advancement in the Armed Services at a Boys' League assem- bly on February 14. On March 22,,representatives from a wide variety of occupations spoke to senior high students about various aspects of their chosen careers. The Boys' Council brightened their appearance by pur- chasing new gray sweaters to replace the outmoded crimson ones. With Mr. Stinchfield's advice, the Council cooperated with the Pepsters in ushering and maintaining order at all athletic events. Karen and her frlends rest on their sun porch, which ls situated over the Inn River at Madulain, after a ski trip. A.F.S. PROVIDES EDUCATIO FOB w v Karen captures memories on one of her camping trips with the Boy Scouts. Karen and her friends rest at a famous monument on the way to Plz Nair, a 10,000 foot peak in the Alps. 26 Karen tries her luck at eating the famous Swiss fondue- pieces of bread dipped into a hot melted cheese and white wine. The aid of felle, a fur placed on the bottom of sklis enables Karen to travel uphill. KARE N SWITZERLAND The first Hoquiam student to go abroad for an entire school year through the American Field Service program, Karen Linnenkohl left Seattle for New York on August 16. After ten days of travel by ship and train, Karen arrived in Tllnau, near Zurich, and greeted her new family, Dr. and Mrs. Rudolph Wespi, their daughters Elizabeth, 19, and Susie, 12, and their son Hansjacob, 15. While in Zurich, Karen attended a private school for girls and studied biology, chemistry, German, history, geography, and algebra six days a Week. Instead of a long summer vacation, Karen's school enjoyed a short vacation each season. During fall vacation Karen and Susie worked with eight other girls in a vineyard in French Switzerland for a week. The land is beautiful, Karen exclaimed in her letters, high snow-covered mountains, thick forests with multi-colored leaves, small chalets, narrow cobblestone roads! About the grapes, Karen said, You haven't tasted grapes until you've tasted them off the vine with a little dirt! She also visited the tiny country of Liechtenstein during fall vacation.. Concerning Christmas customs in Switzerland, Karen wrote, Cn the sixth of December Sammy Claus comes. He brings oranges, peanuts, candy and perhaps toys. He also reads out of his Claus book whether you've been good or bad. Then on Christmas Eve the Christ Child brings the presents. The candles are lit on the tree on Christmas Eve. Karen enthusiastically participated in skiing, the most popular and exciting Swiss sport. After Christ' mas her entire school journeyed to Madulain, a small village in the Alps, for a month's study of home economics. The stay in Madulain provided an opportunity for Karen to ski at St. Moritz, a Winter resort famous for its tobogganing course, and Piz Nair, a mountain of 10,000 foot elevation. ln March, Karen and the other students returned to Zurich to begin their Praktikum by working in a kindergarten nursery. During the following spring vacation Karen traveled to southern Switzer- land and ltaly and then toured Geneva and Bern with twenty-five other A.F.S. students. The year abroad provided priceless friendships and experiences for Karen. Anticipating a first- hand report of her stay in Switzerland, the students of Hoquiam High remain'proud of having had such an exceptional student represent them in an- other part of the world. l With the support of sixty-six members, the , leadership of President Roger Spencer, and the advice of Mr. Jamison and Mrs. Swanson, the International Relations Club participated in two mock United Nations. At Shoreline High School in Seattle, Bob Paylor, Barb Meyers, and Evelyn Bennett appeared on television. At this meeting the club represented four nations: Uganda, Tur- key, Greece, and Mexico. Later in the year, delegates from the club traveled to Clark College in Vancouver. .The members represented a bloc of Communist nations: the U.S.S.R., Romania, Byelorussia, Hungary, and Bulgaria. To cover expenses, members of IRC spon- sored bake sales, sold refreshments at several sports events, and organized the sale of mums for the Thanksgiving football game. l. R. This proved to be an absorbing and controversial topic for this year's debate team. Under the leadership of Mr. Hogan, the team members Barb Hannick, Anne Bushey, Hollee Mickelson, Gregg Newstrand, Tom Ekstrand, and Andy Holt attended many district and col- lege meets. The team, true to Hoquiam tradition, received many honors. They placed fourth in district meets, participated in the district league meet, and received recognition by being the only junior team to receive an invitation to the tourna- ment in Pullman. In March, Barb Hannick and Hollee Mickelson further distinguished the team by placing fourth out of sixteen in competition in Olympia. s k FRONT ROW: Anne Bushey, Hollee Mickelson, Barb Hannick. The energetic group devoted many hours to raising money for the A.F.S. program through candy, doughnut, and hot dog sales. By doing this, they provided Karen Linnenkohl, Hoquiam's A.F.S. represen- tative in Switzerland, with a holiday phone call to her family. During the Christmas season SHOUT assisted the Sunshine Kids program by collecting toys and sponsoring a dance. The active or- ganization also launched the Save Our School campaign which provided the future students of Hoquiam High with a new school. In February, SHOUT sent Valentines to boys in Viet Nam, and in the spring they projected their annual Dollars for Scholars drive. As lovers, Winston Smith and Julia plan to escape the ever-present thought police by joining the underground. They discover, however, the Party's inexorable power as their attempt ends in failure. The living tragedy of the world of l984 culminated when Winston, once again under Party control, realized that Hhe had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother. Unfortunately, however, the required teamwork failed to appear in games with R.A. Long and Kelso when the Lumberjacks and Highlanders soundly defeated Hoquiam. The Griz- zlies improved their record by beating Chehalis 33-13 and Centralia 18-13, but even in these games, Hoquiam players did not appear at their finest. ln contrast, the encounters with Hudson's Bay and Aberdeen showed that aninspired Grizzly team could perform brilliantly and could not be beaten. , , F. 3 Q g , A , B I-Iudson's Bayiarrivted at Olympic Stadium undefeatedlandgrankedrgfifth in the state. GRIZZLY HARRIER PLACE FO RTH T DI TRICT IN LONGVIEW Due to lack of returning lettermen, Hoquiam's Cross Country team en- dured a frustrating second year. Senior Doug Sturm led the Grizzlies to their two victories over Aberdeen, but Coach Boettcher's main handicap lay in the area of depth. All too often the Grizzly runners finished first and last, suffering from the composite method of scoring cross-country meets. Nevertheless, the Grizzlies placed fourth in the District Cross Country Meet held in Longview: only Kelso, Hudson's Bay, and Fort Vancouver proved better in a field of thirteen Southwest Washington contenders. In order of finish 'at the district meet, the team consisted of Doug Sturm, Dave Wilson, John Boettcher, Don Stearns, Wayne Ross, Roger Smith, and John Kilcup. After surmounting their early season problems, the Grizzlies finished second in the Southwest Washington Class AA Conference. The Grizzlies found perhaps their greatest asset this year on their fine bench. When starters Bill Quigg, Jack Irion, Tom Lalforest, Keith Reynvaan, or John Quigg received too many fouls, reserves Jon Parker and Bob Thompson added their fine ability to the team's efforts. Hoquiam, too, had the finest sixth man in the conference, Wayne Ross. After losing a poorly played game to Centralia 47-59, the Grizzlies finished the season with a 10-out-of-1 1 winning streak. The flaw in Hoquiam's string of victories, the Grizzlies' loss to Aberdeen 56-65, helped to provide enough momentum to defeat Aberdeen in the return game 53-44. As a result of this inspired victory, Hoquiam tied with Ever- green and Kelso for second place in the league necessitating two play-off games. The Grizzliescwon their games with Kelso 60-48 and Evergreen 45-37 to capture second place. Exhausted from their efforts in these games, Hoquiam bowed to Aberdeen 44-61 and lost to Evergreen 50-52 despite a strong fourth quarter rally. These results sent the Bobcats and the Plainsmen to the regional tournament and returned the Grizzlies to Hoquiam. 64 Hoquiam Opponents East Bremerton South Kitsap Kelso North Kitsap Raymond Fort Vancouver R. District Meet State Meet in Seattle 70 Coach Tnom Thomas, in his first year as head swimming coach, faced a shortage of swimmers and a series of illnesses to key swimmers resulting in a somewhat mediocre 7-8 win-loss record. But, despite the record, the year had to be termed a success. The Griz- zlies, after losing dismally in their first en- counter with Aberdeen in the Bobcats' cramp- ed pool, earned satisfying revenge in a 49-47 win at Hoquiam. Although the Grizzlies chalked up a 7-8 season record, their con- ference record of 5-6 placed Hoquiam third in Southwest Washington. Many Hoquiam wins came from the senior members of the team, which formed a nucleus to lead the three juniors and five sophomores on the team. Hoquiam swimmers established two school records in the 1966-67 season which included a 1 109.8 by Dave Brook in the breast stroke! and a 218.2 total by diver Bob Knudson. At the State Championship meet in Seattle, Bob Martin placed eighth in the 400-yard free- style and ninth in the 50-yard freestyle while Steve Jordan received the tenth-place award in the 400-yard freestyle. Hoquiam's strength lay in Weight man Milt Mc- Guire, hurdlers Bill Quigg and Bill Delano, and sprinter Chuck Scott. The Grizzlies received many additional points through the efforts of veterans Steve Wise, Roger Spencer, and Doug Sturm. Underclassmen Bill Watson, Andy Mail, John Boettcher, and Larry Lytle boosted the team's scoring strength. The team's early success depended heavily upon the pitching arms of Jack Irion, Ed Korst, Jerry Linnenkohl, and John Quigg. The strong hitting of Tom LaForest and Mack Armstrong, along with the excellent fielding of Steve McKinney and .Ion Parker, provided the Grizzlies with a winning combination. Poor weather postponed many early season games and practices but did not dampen Ho- quiam's spirit. ln games with Olympia and the defending champions, Kelso, the Grizzlies proved themselves worthy of praise. The team spilled Olympia 6-0 andskipped by Kelso in a close pitching duel 2-l. In view of better weather, Coach Asan, who pitched at, Western Washington State College, rated his team as top contenders for the league crown. 9 FRONT ROW: Manager Ken Matheson, Bill Matthew Rick Manwell Larry Snyder, Keith Reynvaan, Steve ROW: Coach George Asan, Steve Richardson, Steve J Jerry Linnenkohl, Steve Carter, Chuck Logan. s, Bob Drugge, Ed Backholm, Manager George Halvarson.
