GOLF Late in April at this writing, the prospects ol' the '58 golf team, under Captain Ed Kavanaugh and Coach Howard Preston, looked gloomy. The first two matches both went to the opposition. The opener with Cheshire at home ended up with Cheshire on top by a score of 612-215. The Suffield match, also at home, was won by the visitors by the same score. There still remained five matches in which the golf team could have improved their record. Cunnery and Choate were the only away affairs so at least we had the advantage of meeting Milford Prep, Taft, and Kingswood on our own course. The team was basically a young one with only one Senior, john Merrifield. The other members of the squad were Pete Fielding, Dave Ragaini, Ed Kavanaugh, Jim MeKeon, and Dave Kushlan, The rankings of the team members continually changed, but at press time Fielding was first, Ragaini second, Kavanaugh third, Merrifield fourth, MeKeon fifth, and Kushlan sixth. Even with only one Senior on the team the future of golf as a sport at Hopkins seems rather dim. The interest outside of the immediate squad is very small and declining each year. H.G.S. , Gunnery At the end of April, the outlook for a winning season in tennis appeared to be bright. The team, whose setbacks have been numerous during the past several years, only lost Captain Ted Ledbetter and john Lunt upon graduation. Three veteran players, Tim Buxton, Steve Feinstein, and John Pouzzner, held the first three positions respectively. The other three posts on the varsity squad were hotly contested between Form V students Bill Cullen, Captain Tom Tilson, and Dunc Murphy, Fourth Former Walt Macauley, and Jack Coogan, a Third Former, and a newcomer to Hopkins. In the first, and only, match played at the time of this writing, the squad showed its potential in the narrow defeat of the Canterbury School by a score of four to three. The victory was especially notable because the team had not had a regular place to practice, being forced to travel to Woodbridge to play each day. Looking forward to next year, continued success is highly probable. All lettermen will be returning, and in addition the fine new courts will allow the team more chance for gaining experience and practice. 46
