Then, under the guidance of the three best coaches in the county, they proceeded to establish the second-best record in the schools history. The Vikings started off the season with consecutiie wins over Perry, Glen- wood, and Northwest. These were team efforts as seven Vikings dented the scoring column. In the fourth game, the Vikings met unbeaten Louisville and came out on top. This was the first Viking eleven ever to defeat Louisville two years in a row. Playing undefeated teams seemed to be- come a habit, as the next three opponents were all undefeated before meeting the Vikings. On successive Fridays, the Vikings defeated Strasburg, Kent State, and East Canton. The Vikings showed their offen- sive power by scoring victories of 45-27, 50-0, 45-0, respectively. In the eighth game of the season, be- fore a crowd of five thousand fa record MYDRON DRAPIER SKIRTS RIGHT FND FOR TEN YARDS for the North Canton Memorial Stadium P. the Vikings met defeat for the only time at the hands of arch-rival jackson 126-I-IJ. The game was bitterly fought, with breaks playing an important part in the outcome. The Vikings closed out the 1957 grid- iron campaign with a 19-7 victory over the Carrollton Wzlrritmrs. North Canton was represented on the All-County squad by halfback Bill Ridge and tackle Ted Mcflintock. BILL RIDGE CUTS UP-FIELD FOR ANOTHER GAIN. The great spirit exhibited during practice, as well as in the games, was probably the most significant factor in the team's success. However, loosening up the offense by em- ploying a basic split-T with split ends and a slot back probably helped a lot, too, as it carried a much greater pass threat and thereby helped the running attack. Fans who watched the Vikings all year long saw numerous long runs which were sprung by the best blocking in the line and downfield that a North Canton team has shown for several years. The passing attack was utilized more than in recent years and sei eral times resulted in long touchdown throws. Perhaps the outstanding feature of the team, though, was the terrific defense, which enabled the offense to have the ball so much of the time. ln one game against a previously undefeated op- ponent, Kent State. the defense was so good that they made only one first down, and that was the result of a penalty. XVe feel this team has started a trend which will see the Vikings as .1 strong team for years to come. Devotion to the game and a keen desire to improve and train. and not being afraid to work the year around. are the key to future suc- cess as it was for this team. In compiling a 12-5 record during regular season play before losing a tight battle in tournament play, the Vikings established one of the better area records. This was accomplished in spite of giving away an edge in height in every game, which was a great disadvantage. The squad developed a fine fast break attack which caused most of our opponents a lot of trouble. Using a zone defense most of the time, but some- times switching man to man, we were able to do a pretty good rebounding job. Late in the season we resorted to use of a pressing zone defense--on some occasions with considerable success. Basically, this was a young team and will improve with another season. They played, and twice defeated, Barberton, which was the number four team in the state. They also defeated their arch-rivals, Jackson 11-Ol and Middlebranch K5-Ol. This year ten lettermen are returning with a good pitching staff. This season the Vikings will play a twenty-eight game schedule. Coach Hertler is hoping that with a good nucleus for a team returning in the spring of 1958, they can come through with a very successful season. The appearance of this new yearbook reminds us that we have reached that time of year when we look back to evaluate the events of the past school term. lt is our sincere hope that the record herein will give you real pleasure throughout the years to come. We have attempted to record the changes, the events, and the personnel of the '57-'58 year at Hoover High. With the help of many people, the Viking staff has been able to create this container of memories. Our personal thanks go to the parents, the teachers, the businessmen, and other friends who have been especially helpful in making this book become a realization. Mr. George Engle, representative of Troup 8: Pluto, Mr. William Boughton of the Canton Engraving Co., Mr. Ray Gillman of the Hoover Company, Mr. Robert Miller of the Y. M. C. A. and Mr. Robert Billingsley of the Standard Printing Co. deserve special acknowledgment for their aid in producing this year's Viking. To all these friends, to the school administration, and to you readers, we want to say one final thank you. This was our year and this is our year's Big Story.
