M vw fiwix .M 1' ' 'ny .. I q,,. V 9 Mum SENIORS Here we are at the City of Graduation, waiting to try our hands at what lies inside. It has taken us four long years to reach our destination. Our journey began at the far end of High School Valley in a small village where we were known as Freshmen. As we left the city and started on our trek up the valley, we encountered such obstacles as Algebra I, Latin I, General Science, and scores of other plots that were laid to catch us and trip us up. The big event of the year was the Freshman-Sopho- more Party, at which we worked quite hard. The next step in our journey was through the Sophomore Swamp. Detention was poking its ugly black head out of the mucky brine to try to capture us. A few got by, but many were temporarily caught in his jaws until Hard Work and Honesty set us free. Left to right: Ronnie Gerber, Betty Skarin, Arletta Mohler, judy Burns, Mr. LaHue, advisor, Nancy Bowers. At last we reached the foot of the junior Mountains. Far at the top we could see the City of Graduation poking through the clouds. Our main obstacle on the junior Mountain was a large, rocky hill known as junior-Senior Prom. At times we wondered if we would ever make it. If it hadn't been for our faithful guides, the Seniors might not have had a prom. At last we came upon the highest and hardest mountain of all, the Senior Moun- tain, at the top of which lies the City of Graduation. Extra-curricular activities be- gan crowding out all studies. But when report cards rolled round, we soon realized we'd better get on the ball. Then came the Senior Prom, put on for our benefit. At last we have received the key to the City of Graduation, our Diploma. It is with very deep regret that we say Good- by to High School Valley, but we are all anxious to start out on the road of life. The orchestra presented two com- mendable concerts in November and March, both revealing the talents pos- sessed by our students. Dr. Hudson, an overworked doctor who does good deeds secretly, finds himself in the center of many problems around Brightwood Hospital. One of these is his teen-age daughter, mloyce, whom he sends to a private school, but he can't seem to keep her there. An- other is a hard-headed businessman, Mr. Wzlrner, who owns the land needed for a new hospital wing. To add to the many problems, Barbara Wztrner, daughter of the rich businessman, falls in love with joel Kelsey, a young intern at Brightwood, and she works at the hospital, hiding her iden- tity. Nancy Ashford, Dr. Hudson's secre- tary, is a great comfort to him all through his trials. ln the end, the new hospital wing is about to become a reality and, with Nancy's help, Dr. Hudson restores his faith in his fellowmen as the curtain falls on a truly successful performance. For the family of a minister, growing up has tribulations that most children escape. So it was with the six children of Rev- erend and Mrs. Porter. The main trouble was an old woman, Miss Jonas, who takes pictures of the boys fighting in their cotton patch and threatens to take them to the bishop. One son, Cecil, puts on an acrobatic dance at school, is expelled, and runs away. All these disasters occur just as the Reverend and Mrs. Porter are planning to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Finally the Porter boys get a picture of the police at Miss where they were of a still in her which she brewed of course. RESERVE BASKETBALL Coach Don Hertler's reserve cagers had a very successful season, winning 10 and losing 6. The team, composed primarily of soph- omores, although lacking height, had much speed, desire and scrap. The team and coach are to be com- mended for their fine showing. FROSH BASKETBALL The freshman cagers had a very suc- cessful season, winning 7 out of 8 league games and tying with Hartville for first- place honors. Coach joe Esmont's crew did a fine job and a never-say-die attitude won them many games. Many of these boys will be varsity basketball stars in the future. The big project for the year was the selling of Viking sweat shirts. In the fall, the girls had softball teams which competed against each other. The season ended with the team called the Band- ettes in first place. In November, a few of the members attended a Play Day at Canton South. This included volleyball and basketball games for all the girls. When basketball season came, the girls once more divided into teams. The struggle for the championship was close, with the Basketeers and the Bouncing Teens tying. In the play-off game, the Basketeers came out as the victors. In April the girls had their own Play Day with the Canton South girls as their guests. The president for the year was Leona Porter, who set a very good example for future presidents. Other officers included Carolyn Smith, vice-president, Nancy Hagen- locker, secretary, Marian Wisniewski, treas- urer, Linda Piper, publicity chairman: Patsy Snyder, softball activity leader: Sally Deible, kickball activity leader, Gail Dolan, basket- ball activity leader, Pam McAnall, junior high basketball activity leader. Nobody can stop you from crossing state lines, choosing your own job. In America you have a right to work anywhere you please. Lots of people in other countries wish they had this same freedom. If you lived behind the Iron Curtain-or under that kind of government-you'd be expendable manpower, nothing else. You'd work where you were told to work, at any job the state said you should do. You'd have no choice. You couldn't hope for better working conditions, criticize the boss, or pick up and leave. You know. . . it's really something, this freedom to work where you please. It's a precious heritage, part of being an American. And doesn't it give you the shudders to realize that there are people who'd like to take this right-put us all under Iron Curtain working conditions? Let's not let it happen. . . Keep your rights, all of them, including this one. Speak up for them. Resist any movement to take them away. Don't let anyone talk down your freedom. Compare what you've got with what they've got-and keep your right to work where you choose! The best way to protect your rights is to know them and treat them right by exercising them.
