In April almost everybody takes an examination in an attempt to get a place on the scholarship team. The two highest people in each subject are chosen for this honor. Then, in early May, these students make a trip to Akron to compete in the final district-state scholarship tests. These people in the picture who placed on the scholarship team last year, along with those who placed this year, deserve a lot of credit for the fine efforts they put forth. Page 25

FIRST ROW: DEBATE TEAM One of the morst worthwhile activities in North Canton High School is debate. The de- baters spend a good deal of their time from November through March preparing cases and par- ticipating in debate tournaments all over Ohio. The question for debate this year was on the method to be used in electing our President. Besides the Varsity and BU debate teams, there were several excellent Freshman and Sophomore debate teams. The Varsity team this year was composed of Carol Kitzmiller, Paul Dolan, John Norris, and Roy Newell, who placed second in the state tournament at Columbus. ATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE The National Forensic League is a national organization made up of speech students. To be a member of this organization requires an active participation in speech activities and a good scholastic record. The tongue-waggers in the N. F. L. receive their points for debate, service speeches, and individual events. These points go toward degrees which the student receives when he has 20, 50, 100, and 200 points, and towards a scholarship at Ripon College in Wiscon- sin. The officers of this organization are Linda Swann, president, john Norris, vice president, June Harpold, secretary, Carol Kitzmiller, treasurer, and Paul Dolan, publicity manager. ATIO AL HO OR SOCIETY Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service are the four standards upon which mem- bership in the National Honor Society is based. This society was established to give due attention to those deserving students who possess the qualities necessary for good citizenship in the years that are yet ahead of us. These quali- ties are most often determined by participating in school and community projects, by co- operation with schoolmates and advisers, and by a genuine interest in academic pursuits. Each year a committee of faculty members chooses the new members, who must have a scholastic average of 85 or above. This year the society admitted nine new members in an inspiring ceremony. An added attraction was the guest speaker, Dr. Eibling, whose en- lightening message was warmly received.
