SENIUH HHSS HISHIHY Dear Seniors: As our last year in high school draws to a close, it is only fitting and proper that we should pause a moment and recall the things that made our stay here in North Canton High interesting and enjoyable. We owe much of our success financially, as well as scholastically, to the efforts of our advisor, Mr. Schneider, who kindly gave his time and helpful advice in our business ventures and in our social activities. We have witnessed a great change. While yet freshmen we felt the influx of self government, ,for the Student Council was organized that year. We have experienced a change in school management and have learned a new meaning of Democracy. We have seen the No-Ca-Hi Lights grow and have come to realize that its contribution to the school is of no little worth. We have thrilled to the triumphs of our athletic teams and point with pride and joy to our championship trophies. In scholarship we have been out- standing. Many of our group are members of the National Honor Society. Our records for the annual scholarship contest at Canton Twp. are envied by many. We have had good times! The Sophomores generously initiated us, and we did likewise to the struggling Freshmen. As' salesmen we'have no equal. We have no doubt contributed much to the dentists' prosperity by our junior candy concession. We set a new high with our ice cream sales at the county tournament in '4O. We made the Christmas of '40 duly sweet by the sale of Christmas candy. We helped to provide high class entertain- ment for the people of our town by selling, in our Junior year, tickets' to the Entertainment Festival at the Community Building. We have raised the standard of reading by bringing good magazines within the reach of all. We have purchased rings and pins as a token to keep alive the mem- ory of our school, and we have, as Seniors, left as a token of our apprecia- tion some shrubbery to beautify the surroundings. To Mr. Miller and Mr. Franz goes much of the credit for the produc- tion of our theatrical attempts. Both our junior play, The Missing Wit- ness, and our Senior play, Thornton Wilder's unusual Our Town, leave high marks of theatrical excellence for future groups to strive for. The extravagance of our .banquet for the class of '40 will never be for- gotten, and we Wish to thank the Juniors for their most wonderful enter- tainment for us. We, the class of '41, step out into a world filled with bloodshed and hatred. Upon our shoulders and upon the shoulders of thousands like us rests the future of our great nation. May we thank God for the liberties we enjoy, and resolve in our hearts to keep Old Glory, with all the things she stands for, flying for ever and ever. Nothing but the Truth was a comedy set in a broker's office and home. A whirlwind of entnnglements, including a wager that Bob Bennett, the junior partner, could not tell the truth for twenty-four hours, was brought to cn climax when Bob won the bet, money, and the girl, Not only were the main roles handled magnificently but thc supporting parts were enacted with that finesse which tells the difference between Zl bad play and a good one. Yes, Nothing but the Truth was dehnitely a success. Our Town is a typical New England village. Its name is Grover's Corners, and the people who live here are not unlike all small town people of the early nineteen hundreds. Two of the prominent men of Our Town, Dr. Gibbs and Editor Webb of the Sentinel, live next to each other on Main Street. Dr. Gibbs' son, George, and Mr. Webbs' daughter, Emily, while they were in their last year of high school, found themselves quite attached to each other. The afternoon they discovered this mutual attraction, George decided he would not go to the college, but planned to settle down on his uncle's farm after he had graduated from high school. This love affair proceeded very nicely for about a year, after which they had a simple wedding in Grover's Corners' Congregational Church. Their married life was cut short when Emily died. She was taken to the little cemetery on the hill where most of the people who die in Grover's Corners, are buried. Here she found many of her friends who had passed on before her. Emily asked if she might go back and live once again her twelfth birthday. Her request was granted, but she not only lived again, she also saw herself living. This proved to be a very unhappy experience, seeing and realizing how much emphasis was put on the trivial things in life, hardly taking time to look at each other. So Emily returned to her place on the hill, just in time to see George bringing some flowers to decorate the new grave. M. L. R. When George Harris learns that Mr. Shelby, his owner, must sell his slaves, he tells his wife of his plan to escape. Several days later his wife and child also escape chased by some slave buyers. She runs toward the Ohio River and seeing it blocked with cakes of ice she jumps across reaching the other side safely. St. Clare, his daughter Eva, and his cousin Ophelia return home from Vermont, bringing with them an old slave, Uncle Tom, who saved Eva from drowning. Eva becomes very attached to Tom and when she dies asks St. Clare to free him. But St. Clare is shot, having neglected to sign Tom's freedom papers. Tom is then sold to the villainous Simon Legree. He whips Uncle Tom to death for refusing to do the evil things he tells him to do. As Tom is dying Legree is arrested for thc killing of St. Clare. He resists and is shot.
